Movie Monster Tournament
I'd like to gauge interest in a HDC Movie Monster Tournament.
A "Movie Monster" would be defined as: - a specifically named individual entity, - with beyond human attributes, - a physical creature, - appearing in a horror film. For instance, as you would expect it would include the Creature of the Black Lagoon and Godzilla; would include Dracula (beyond human & specific individual), but not vampires (because that's plural); would include Frankenstein's Monster (beyond human attributes 'strength & undead'), but not Dr. Frankenstein (not beyond human); would include Cujo (a specific individual entity), but not "dogs", "bees" or "piranha" (because those are plural); would include Michael Myer/Jason (beyond human attributes), but not a ghost or demon (not physical creature), but would include Possessed Regan (specific physical individual with beyond human attributes). I'd structure and run as our other tournaments have been run. This type of tourney would go well with a per decade of Horror film approach, and then go into a final selection for the top Movie Monster of all-time. Who would be interested in participating (voting)? Anyone have any comments, suggestions, questions, anything at all? . |

I would like a monster tourney very much. Surprised it hasn't been done before. Definitely participating.

It's been done at least two times before, if not more.
My comprehensive one - http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58023 Posher's Best Creature tourney - http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28439 Posher's Legendary Creature tourney - http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33760 ...plus plenty of Gore's Horror Icon tournaments figured movie monsters/creatures, not to mention other "Horror Icon" tourneys.

Didn't we already do this? I can't search on my phone but it was The Monsters/Creatures tournament or something like that. Frankenstein's Monster won if I remember correctly.

If you do a new tournament, I will participate. I did not get to participate in those other monster tournaments.

Many of the folks who participated in these older tournaments no longer frequent this forum or participate in these Tournaments so it might be interesting to see how results may vary based on different voters so I guess I'm not against another tournament. However, I don't think we should just keep repeating the same things over again so perhaps there should be a different criteria in making the selections. Usually these are fairly open to interpretation but perhaps being more specific would help give it a new approach. Are we imagining these monsters physically fighting each other? Are we voting for most memorable? Biggest impact on Monster cinema? Strictly your personal favorite? Just my thoughts.

There's only so many things you can judge by. I'd tend to go by a definition of the 'greatest' which would be a subjective combination of personal level of impact of any kind, depth of fascination, depth of background and interesting characteristics, creatures' wider symbolism, impact on film history and fame. But not sure yet. I'll mull over some ideas. (You know that expression, Kan?) ;) Last edited by Sculpt; 08-08-2013 at 02:48 AM. |
