i guess it depends on how fast you read ..
it takes a fraction of a second to quickly scan the lines then your brain digests them when you're waching the picture ...

the end result is you actually think you're understanding the language - almost...

I was actually wondering, if I watched enough asian films for long enough, I'd be able to pic up some of the language... watching an asian film is a bit like one of those learn a language cd's, except you enjoy the film aswell.

i doubt it - not unless you have a real gift ...
you may get a word here and there ..

i've learned a bit of cantonese through a past girlfriend and workmates but that enabled me to recognize the odd word
in a movie - not the other way around.

the sentance structure is too different - there is nothing obvious and the pronounciation is very different from what you would learn taking a course too - plus with all the different dialects - man its hard to learn.

i think you'd need something far more intense than the occasional movie - you need to speak it and practice it every day ..

I'm the same way, subtitles do not bother me at all. Would much rather read subtitles then watch a dubbed film. That irks me. Though it can be amusing at times.

Watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at the moment. A movie I adore. :D
