Did you hear that Seth and Evan were writing an episode of The Simpsons?

Kung Fu Hustle + Seth Rogen = The Green Hornet

September 19, 2008

"Kung Fu Hustle" director-star Stephen Chow has signed on to helm and co-star in Columbia Pictures' "The Green Hornet."

Seth Rogen has already boarded the project as the masked crime fighter.

Chow, one of the biggest draws in Asian cinema who has enjoyed crossover success with such films as "CJ7" and "Shaolin Soccer," will portray the Green Hornet's similarly masked manservant Kato.

In tapping Chow for the project, studio continues a long association with the star and director. Under its local language initiative, Sony co-produced and released "Kung Fu Hustle," which grossed more than $100 million worldwide. Sony also released "CJ7."

"Green Hornet" will bow June 25, 2010.

Originally created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker as a 1930s radio show, the Green Hornet has appeared in film serials in the 1940s, a network TV program in the '60s and multiple comicbook incarnations.

Chow said he has been a huge fan of the TV show since he was a kid. "The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee's shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true," the Hong Kong native said. "I'm grateful to my friends at Sony, who have shown so much faith in me for so many years."

Rogen and Evan Goldberg penned the screenplay. Neal H. Moritz is the producing through his Sony-based Original Film shingle.

One of my favorite 60's TV shows, but, somehow, I don't think I can picture Rogan as Britt Reid, anymore than I could picture him as Cary Grant-

unless they pumped him full of Slim-Fast, since I last saw him.

Actress Cameron Diaz, who made her big screen debut in The Mask, is reportedly mulling a return to the realm of comic book movies.

According to Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider blog, Diaz is in "early talks" to play the female lead in The Green Hornet.
No other details about the role -- whether it's a girlfriend or a femme fatale -- are known at this time.

Seth Rogen stars as the titular crimefighter. He also co-wrote the script with Evan Goldberg. Michel Gondry will direct.

Filming begins soon for a July 9, 2010 release.

It wasn't that tough to see this one coming. After word hit that Kung Fu Hustle helmer Stephen Chow would not be directing The Green Hornet after all, assurances that he would still costar as the titular hero's sidekick Kato seemed dubious.

Turns out they were.

Spoiler TV has tracked down a casting call for the Kato role which would seem to be legit, and which would seem to indicate that Chow is out!

Here it is:

"[KATO] ALL ASIAN ETHNICITIES, Male, 20's - early 40's. Brit Reid's manservant/chauffeur by day and Green Hornet's martial arts-skilled sidekick by night sptv050769. Actor doesn't have to have Martial Arts experience"

Michel Gondry is still set to direct, and Seth Rogen will star -- assuming this film ever actually gets made.

Columbia Pictures is in early talks with Nicolas Cage to play the gangster villain in "The Green Hornet."

Cameron Diaz is negotiating to play a reporter and love interest in the Michel Gondry-directed pic that stars Seth Rogen as the masked crime fighter.

The picture is moving full steam ahead for a fall start date, even as the studio looks to replace Stephen Chow, who was going to play sidekick Kato.
Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote the script and Neal Moritz is producing through his Original Films banner.

The picture is set for release next summer.

Cage just completed "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and remake "The Bad Lieutenant."
Diaz is booked to star with Tom Cruise in the untitled James Mangold-directed action comedy that had formerly been titled "Wichita," for 20th Century Fox.

Taiwanese singer-actor Jay Chou has joined the cast of Columbia's "The Green Hornet" opposite Seth Rogen in the role of sidekick Kato.

Chou replaces Hong Kong actor Stephen Chow in the role, originally made famous by Bruce Lee in the 1966-67 TV series.

Col made the announcement Friday. "Hornet," directed by Michel Gondry, is slotted for a summer 2010 release and the project's moving ahead for a fall start date.

"Jay is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog!" Gondry said.

Chou broke into film in "Initial D" in 2005 in China, starred opposite Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li in Zhang Yimou's "The Curse of the Golden Flower" and "Kung Fu Dunk" and made his directorial debut and starred in "Secret." He's also in the upcoming Chinese film "Ci Ling" and in Yuen Woo-Ping's "True Legend."

The studio's in early talks with Nicolas Cage to play the gangster villain in "The Green Hornet" and Cameron Diaz is negotiating to play a reporter and love interest.

According to a press release sent out by Columbia Pictures, two more actors have been added to the cast of the now-filming The Green Hornet in the shape of Tom Wilkinson and David Harbour.

Wilkinson previously worked with director Michel Gondry on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, while Harbour is best known for his roles in Revolutionary Road and Quantum of Solace.

And while there was no indication as to who they would play, the release also confirmed that Battlestar Gallactica star Edward James Olmos will appear in the film, while Nicolas Cage is also in negotiations to star.

They join Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz and Jay Chou in the superhero flick, which is set to hit screens on December 17, 2010.

Nicolas Cage has dropped out of The Green Hornet.

The star was set to play the villain, but according to The Hollywood Reporter he was not able to agree terms with studio Columbia.

Shooting has already begun on the action movie - which stars Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz and Jay Chou - so producers will have to be quick in replacing Cage.

Michel Gondry is directing the flick, which revolves around a masked crime fighter and his high-kicking sidekick Kato.

With the publicity for Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry’s Green Hornet picking up steam in the past monh or so, more news has come out on the casting of the main villain in he film, Mr. X. The role was originally set to go to Nicolas Cage, but for whatever reason (possibly the fact that he’s got another superhero film in the works with Kick-Ass), Cage has stepped down from his role.

We now recieve word that the role will instead be taken on by Christoph Waltz, fresh from playing the Nazi baddie in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.

“I’m told that ICM’s actor Christoph Waltz who won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for playing a Nazi in Inglourious Basterds (and is a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination) has now been cast as villain Chudnofsky in Sony’s The Green Hornet opposite Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz.

Since Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds came out — and crossed the $100M mark this weekend – Waltz has been offered a lot of big movies by a lot of big directors. And he’s getting big bucks now. How great he’s found success at age 52.”

This is the second news of an actor getting replaced from the film after Stephen Chow stepped down from both directing and the role of Kato. See Waltz, Rogen, and Cameron Diaz in theaters for Green Hornet on December 17, 2010.
