Twin Peaks to potentially return...online, and Lynch-less?

Yes, this is a TV show, not a movie. But it's really interesting news, and it deserves to be in a forum that people actually read on occasion.

Diane,

It's June 17, 2009, and I'm coming back to Twin Peaks.

How's this for a shocking piece of news: Seventeen years after Kyle MacLachlan last appeared as Special Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, WENN reports that the actor wants to resurrect the legendary show on the Internet. The actor says: "I have a crazy idea to bring back Twin Peaks on the net as five-minute webisodes." Should this become a reality, it will be without David Lynch, whose "focus is more on transcendental meditation now."

To be, or not to be ... I can't decide. At the very least, the idea doesn't fill me with revulsion or dread, but rather curiosity and a whole lot of questions. Would Cooper still be the same without Lynch molding him? And what of co-creator Mark Frost -- would he be involved? Even if the other quirky half is too busy meditating, Peaks webisodes are a much more worthy project than Frost's recent stints writing the Fantastic Four movies. Would these just be more tapes to Diane? Would other faces come back? Would it matter? *Spoiler Alert*

There's not many faces that could come back -- and definitely not many of the more desirable ones, unless MacLachlan is looking to dip into the Black Lodge more. Okay, should this get a little bit evil -- I'm sold. Who wouldn't want to see Bob's wicked control of Cooper, plus more Laura, Leland (Ray Wise!!), and of course, The Man From Another Place?
I'm pretty torn on this. As much as I'd love love love to see more of this fantastic world and wonderful characters...would it still work? I'm not even so concerned about Lynch not being involved - his style has changed drastically since those days anyway - but more about the characters.

Even if they could get more original cast members to return they've all aged nearly 20 years (plus, Jack Nance was killed back in '96). Would we still be interested in Audrey Horne pushing 40? What about a geriatric Sheriff Truman? Kyle MacLachlan hasn't aged too badly, but it would sure take some fancy makeup even to get him back in character.

Still...there are millions of stories left to be told in this universe. Would it be worthwhile to pick things up again, even with the necessary changes in cast + character?

I know we've got lots of fans around here...thoughts?

Wow.

What? This really is surprising. I'm definitely concerned with almost every aspect of it, but I still don't think I could even form an opinion until I've seen it.

But, really. Wow.

I'm really surprised MacLachlin is the one to want to do it, too. I had always heard he was super hesitant about doing Fire Walk With Me.

I'm not sure if I think Lynch's style has changed all that much, though. While humor seems to be less and less a crucial part of his work, I think his nightmare vision is still the very same that we saw in Eraserhead. You watch a dream sequence from Twin Peaks, or the diner scene in Mulholland Drive, or really any part of Inland Empire, and so on, and it still gives off that confusingly perfect translation of nightmare logic and his mood is always spot-on. I think his filmmaking heart is still in the same place that it was in 1990, or even 1970 for that matter. I'm worried this Twin Peaks would lose something in his non-involvement.

However, if they don't actively try to make it like the television show and try to make it more of its own thing, then I think they might have something. Either way, you're definitely right when you say that there are millions of stories left to be told in this universe.

I don't know. I'm going to throw up my hands on this one and just wait.

I dont see this working without someone with a Lynchian vision involved in it.

But then again, five-minute web episodes? Sounds like an even worse idea. I can literally see Twin Peaks getting flushed out.

Let's hope they discard this extremely crazy idea.

Yeah, I can actually see MacLachlin changing his mind on this.
He even calls it "a crazy idea" in the article.

Chrono? Rod? MissMacabre? Doc? Others?

I would love to see this happen. Any more story, more explanation. It was left so open ended and even Fire Walk With Me didn't close the case for me. Books, comics, something!? anything.

The beauty of this story is the open-endedness. It leaves you with vivid imaginations of what would/might have happened or will happen, and you could make all sorts of deductions and to fit your own theories with them.

A supplement piece without Lynchian vision and offering explanations? No thank you.

A supplementary piece to give me some more clues. I would love it if Lynch just wrote a novel or comic for it. those tend to be the better continuations for tv shows that got cancelled too soon. Take Firefly, Buffy, Angel. The whole Jossverse did very well in comic form.

I just really like to have a final The End to things. Open ended stories make me angry, because I can't be right that way. lol especially with a series based around "who killed laura palmer?" and to not let anyone in on who did kill her for 20 years is laaame.

I'm probably gonna delete this post tomorrow when I'm sobered up hahahah

Surely the time is approaching perfect to continue the story, given that (not sure how careful I need to be on spoilers for a TV show nearly 20 years old, but I'm a newbie so I'll err on the side of caution) a certain person couldn't leave a certain place for 25 years?

But no Lynch, no deal.

I personally have a strange feeling that this idea will splutter out, but that it'll be back properly at some point. Some old cast, some new cast.

Write it in your diary.
