Perfect Blue (anime)

A lot of people say this is Hitchcocklike, but I'd say it looks like it's influenced by Argento more, and may have had some influence on Mulholland Drive. What does everyone else think?

I would say you're pretty close there, I do see some Argento in that one. It's almost like... if a Hitchcock story was directed by Argento. It really broke some barriers I felt and some of the scenes are as moving as a live action flick.

Absolutely. I think it was a really gutsy and unique thing to do with anime.

I thought this anime was incredible! I think it really opens you into the world of madness, identity, and discernible reality. That being said, I didn't find it very Hitchcockian just because it is more than just a suspense thriller/mystery and Hitchcock really didn't deal a lot with perceptions of reality and obsession.

I'm not familiar enough with Argento's work to really comment on his classic themes, though I didn't find this very David Lynch. There are several allusions to Lynch's Mullholand Drive, but from what I've heard about the plot in Inland Empire, it follows Perfect Blue's plot and themes much closer than Mullholand Drive.

Here's Inland Empire: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460829/

Perfect Blue actually predated Mulholland Drive. The particular concerns with fame, success, perception and identity seemed remarkably similar and used in sort of similar ways.
