He's a HUGE comic book geek - like crazy weird huge geek. He took his last name from Powerman and named his son Kal-El.
He pestered the studio heads at Warner Brothers constantly about the movie, saying how much he wanted to play the part. He's an Oscar winner, pursuing a passion project - the suits thought it seemed like a good idea, but no director would make the movie with Cage as Supes... but it would be really weird, wouldn't it?
I'd go see it just for the curiosity of it all.
