SCARECROWS 1988
After a 3 million dollar heist, a gang of robbers, who appear almost military-like, end up chasing down one of their own in a deserted, scarecrow infested farm/plantation/lodge??? I liked it. Nothing super but the scarecrows were pretty decent. |
Maniac
First viewing. Better than I expected. If anyone can recommend any similar movies, I would appreciate it. |

Didn't like it that much as it focuses more on the victims than on the killer. But thanks for your suggestion. |

9/10. My favourite out of the series , love the zombies & the effects. |

As mentioned, THE PROWLER not bad. You might want to check out NIGHTMARE (1981) AKA NIGHTMARE IN A DAMAGED BRAIN which is similar and even more grimy in spots than MANIAC. ------------------------------------- SHOCK WAVES (1977). While the premise sounds silly (underwater Nazi zombies), this is a pretty good little flick that is quite creepy. Peter Cushing::cool:: and John Carradine also in here. ***1/2 |

The Lair of the White Worm (1988)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...white_worm.jpg Just watched this on FEARnet On Demand and was surprised at how young Peter Capaldi looks. I almost didn't recognize him. Capaldi plays an archaeologist who unearths an unusually large snake skull. Legend tells that it was slain by the ancestor of Hugh Grant's character. The sexy villainess played by Amanda Donohoe is actually an immortal vampire priestess. She steals the skull and plans to sacrifice a virgin to her snake god Dionin. It's all the fun of a Hammer Film without actually being a Hammer movie. The specials effects are pretty low budget and there's a little bad acting but other than that it's a really solid B-movie. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9F8vsO0MZv...white-worm.jpg |

Looks interesting. Found it online so I'm gonna watch it soon. Quote:
Pretty good from what I remember. And speaking of flamethrowers, they don't use them enough in movies. |

I didn't watch it recently but thought it was a great movie with a very original idea. It's called Pulse. It's not the one made recently in the 2000s. I think it was the mid to late eighties. It's a much see, IMO. One of the lawerence boys was in it. I found the movie on on demand last year, said ehh, I will try it, and watched it. Blew me away. Way better than the one Wes craven did.

8/10. my 2nd favourite peter jackson film after Braindead |
Watched Last House on the Left again a few days ago. Still great, although pretty far fetched... more each time I see it.

If you want something that has a similar, low budget, exploitation feel with a few arthouse elements, like Maniac, you could find that Driller Killer scratches the itch. If what you liked most about Maniac was the first person camera perspective, well, the Maniac remake is actually really excellent, and IMO, better than the original. |
You should watch crawlspace.

Ghostbusters. Really liked it when it first came out, liked it even more last night, thirty years later.

---------------------------------------------- THE BOOGENS. 1981 An old silver mine is reopened awakening creatures that have been confined for almost a century. Two young men employed at the mine, rent a house nearby and move in their girlfriends with deadly consequences. I enjoyed it but must admit I was a little surprised to see the good reviews this movie had. ::confused:: |
My brother sent THE BOOGENS in my Xmas box...still not watched it yet...oddly enough I missed it back in the 80's when I went to the theater for every new horror film, it seemed.
--------------------------------------- SILENT SCREAM (1980)_real low budget flick of college students (who else) staying at a boarding house with mysterious goings on. Actually a lot better than I thought it would be with decent turns by Yvonne DeCarlo (Lily Munster herself) and Barbara Steele (BLACK SUNDAY, etc). *** |

-------------------------------------------- THE MIDNIGHT HOUR 1985 A group of teens inadvertently bring a curse of hell on earth to their town which must be reversed before midnight. This film is mired in cheesy goodness with a side of campiness. There are zombies, witches, werewolves and cheerleaders. |

I'm with you all the way there. Edmond is a unique, bizarre film. William H. Macy is typically electrifying. Driller Killer has always been a favorite of mine. So many striking images. |
[QUOTE=The Bloofer Lady;971641]My goodness Frye..is this the same brother that sent you the "Fright Night" 1985 soundtrack. Is he single?
-------------------------------------------- Indeed it is (just the one Bro) and sadly, he is off the market. Just got married for the first time last year at 48:shocked: and has a ten year old stepson and an almost four year old son::EEK!:: Back in our single days, we saw lots of scary movies together before family life got us in its clutches!..I have the one daughter who is 26 and out of the house, while Brother has years of fun to look forward too! |

HELL NIGHT 1981
Starring Linda Blair and Vincent Van Patton. Students spend the night in a mansion where the previous owner had murdered his family. This started out a bit predictable but I had a few genuine scares as it progressed. Its cheesy at times but actually pretty good. Linda Blair looked a little older than the other students and a bit out of place, but that was due, in part, to the costume she was wearing. |
Prom Night (1980)
Far from Jamie Lee Curtis' best horror movie. It's kind of slow in the middle and the reveal of the killer is predictable by today's standards otherwise it's a solid '80s slasher movie. Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987) Definitely an improvement on the original. Adding the supernatural element to this franchise was like a breath of fresh air during a time when slasher movies had become stale and predictable. At first it gives off a low budget Poltergeist vibe but goes on to deliver some very visually striking scenes. The rocking horse's head coming to life in Vicki's room was just awesome. Vicki getting pulled into the chalkboard was also pretty cool. Very satisfying ending. |
Halloween 4, Return of Micheal Meyers
2/10 It stayed with the tradition of Halloween story/orthodoxy. But IMO the director was not skilled in creating the tension, mood and horror that made Halloween so notable. Without that, with this plot/story, there's really nothing there. In addition, I didn't care about the characters (the older step sister a little). Even good ole Donald Pleasence was a bit caricature. |
THE INCUBUS. 1981
Starring John Cassavetes (purrrrrrrr) Women in the town of Galen are being brutally raped and mutilated. The town's doctor and police chief are horrified but helpless against the culprit. Interesting plot and great ending. |

Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural (1973)
http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps2f9b7cfd.jpg Truly an underrated gem with a pretty dark subject matter. >>: A- Patrick Vive Ancora aka Patrick Still Lives (1980) http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps30a2e655.jpg Wow! A late 70s Aussie classic gets an Italian exploitation 'sequel' treatment in early 80s!! What better anyone could expect?! Sad...this things doesn't happen anymore ::sad:: Loved it for its super-sleaziness with plenty of nudity::big grin:: Thanks to Ferox for the rec. >>: B+ |
Clicked on "House" on Netflix - freakin' hilarious, but lamer than I remember...

I looked up a lot of reviews after watching "The Incubus" and was surprised at how many of them hinted at an incestuous relationship between the Doctor and his daughter. It was an awkward father/daughter relationship to watch, especially when he sees her getting out of the shower naked but keeps watching!(cringe), but I didn't think there was incest. |

-------------------------------------------------------- BLACULA (1972). A film that is a lot better than it sounds. Good perf by William Marshall and a few genuinely scary moments, especially the slo-mo hall run! *** |

Trilogy of Terror (1975) Not great, not terrible. I was expecting more, given its cult status, but I guess the only reason you watch it is for the Zuni fetish doll, which was also a little underwhelming since the primary effect was a puppet shaking uncontrollably against a black screen. Still, he looked cool and is definitely a unique monster. The other two segments felt like below average episodes of The Twilight Zone, although it was nice to see Karen Black in three different roles (four, really). 6/10 |
::big grin:: Trilogy of Terror...
Well, you know, funny thing about that is it was made for TV, and aired March 4 (many Northerners still stuck inside for Winter) in 1975, where sexual mores where changing and some of the mainstream experimented with wife swapping and stuff like that (which explains the one part), and then pop psychology was taking off with the split personality part, (Sybil would explode the next year). But of course, the Zuni doll would strike a nerve, especially on women watching on TV at the time, freaked them out, and caused nightmares for days, and became legend. It's a 'cult status' of sorts. To the seasoned male horror fan, circa 2014, it's not likely to hit ya much. I thought the Zuni sequence was shot brilliantly. Talk about working with what you have. It had me on the edge of my seat. |
PULSE 1988
A young boy (Joey Lawrence) comes to stay at his dad and step-mom's new house. The house across the street has been recently ransacked and gutted by the previous owner who neighbors claim went mad. The owner died in the process. The little boy starts noticing strange happenings in his dad's new house. Surprisingly, its his step-mum (a real sweetie) who believes him and takes his side. Enjoyed it as it reminded me why I like the 80's so much. |

Always liked Dan Curtis's material... PUMPKINHEAD (1988). Pretty decent little flick with Lance Henriksen turning in a real good perf as the grieving father. Sorta surprised not a million sequels followed this . ***1/2 MOD NOTE: Please use the QUOTE/MULTI quote feature. |

AMITYVILLE 3 THE DEMON 1983
Starring Tony Roberts and Tess Harper Out of the Amityville sequels I've watched so far, this is the best. It has that grainy VHS look to it, which I love and a solid story til about the last 10 mins or so. Meg Ryan and Candy Clark also star. |
AMITYVILLE 2. THE POSSESSION 1982. Spoilers ahead
This movie is more of a prequel, presumably about the Ron Defeo family and the lead up to the murders. Not bad, some pretty squeamish moments for me when the younger children were hunted down. The ending was a bit sloppy and unresolved. I think this the 5th Amityville sequel I've watched in the last week. |
