Red Riding Trilogy: 1974-1980-1983 (2009)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...jidhdc/RRT.jpg

Set against the backdrop of child serial murders as well as the Yorkshire Ripper killings, with a great bunch of actors this 3 part TV movie is pretty slow burn & depressing but quite convincingly portrays a harrowing world of multi-layered police corruption and organized crime. Not for everyone, but definitely worth a watch for anyone who's got the patience for a long, noir-like crime drama-thriller. Liked the first 2 parts mostly, expected a better conclusion in the final part which wasn't delivered.

...back-to-back.

The 2011 film is such a wonderful prequel/companion piece to Carpenter's remake, but for 2 things - Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character stands out like a sore thumb (honestly, the film could have been MUCH better without her character), and the rather tacky CGI effects. Other aspects though - tying up with Carpenter's film, character development, background score, cinematography , direction and script pacing - are superb. I especially liked how the director used all the characters and gave them all pretty much equal screen space. And the detailed scenes which tie up with Carpenter's film, specially the helicopter name-number tag in the end - excellent observation and attention to detail by the director. My only niggle will always be Mary for this film.
As for Carpenter's remake, very few things to complain of. Best watched on BD for that fine grainy nostalgic feel. Really makes you wonder today how the hell it was a BO dud upon it's release.

Maybe I'll try a double feature with The Thing. But I thought that the prequel/remake wasn't needed. It didn't get what made the original one of the best horror movies. That sense of paranoia. I've only seen it once. But I didn't get the feeling that I was seeing one of the best horror movies ever with the 2011 version like I did with the Carpenter version. I thought Mary Elizabeth Winstead did fine with what she was given. A better director (Cameron, Tarantino, Scott, etc) would have made her one of the best female movie characters.

curtains 1983 great film but knew who the killer was from the word go

Cold Prey 3

5/10

Eh. Not the worst slasher I've seen but it for sure isn't the best.

wizard of gore 08-20-2012 06:34 PM

... again, just coz everyone all ways says "ill never watch that again"

The Raven 6/10

I love John Cusack and Edgar Allen Poe and you'd think it would be a great match but IMO it's not. It is more like a Sherlock Holmes mystery than an Edgar Allen Poe mystery/horror story. Though I love Sherlock Holmes, when I watch a movie about Edgar Allen Poe I expect some supernatural elements to it, that's what he is best known for, this movie had none. It was an okay movie, decent acting, it just lacked that Poe feel to it.

Are you actually implying that Tarantino would make a good version of The Thing?

Elvis_Christ 08-20-2012 09:51 PM

The Entity

Brilliant. I think this would rank as my favorite haunting flick.

Predators

Re-watched the series recently and finished it off with this. Great stuff aside from the original this is my favorite.

I LOVE that film yes the killer was predictable but the murder set pieces were astounding and there was a lovely brooding atmosphere and reliably strange characters :)

Frozen (2009) I have no idea why I watched this Adam Green directed sack of shit I must have been insanely bored. The only good thing was the bone-crunching gore (which was unsettling) but that wasn't enough to save this movie. The characters were so irritating and idiotic that I had to mute them when they sometimes went too far with their shallow inane drivel. It even had one of the most ridiculously unpalatable cop out endings I've ever seen. Dire.

Im about to watch Suicide club again...wish me luck.Im going in alone.Pop musictastic

realdealblues 08-21-2012 07:48 AM

The Night Stalker (1987) aka "The Man Who Could Not Be Killed"

Nice little 80's supernatural/action/crime movie starring Charles Napier (one of my favorite Character Actors) and Robert Z'Dar. I guess this is the movie that got Z'Dar "Maniac Cop". It's nothing spectacular by any means but worth a watch if you like 80's cinema.

Attack The Block-----not bad....I just find it hard to root for punk-ass kids

Catch 44--- some director trying to be Tarantino....and failing .

I watched that one a couple weeks ago and found myself rooting for the aliens.

Student Bodies (1981) --- send-up to the slashers of the 70s. Lots of fun, though kind of sputters through the last 20 minutes. A couple of jokes have grown stale but overall still funny.

My last horror film was "Paranormal Activity 3". I laughed more than anything. These "ghostly encounters" aren't very scary and the ending of the movie was just plain stupid. Although; I thought the final scene where the guy gets his back broken was hilareous.

Mr-X 08-21-2012 01:15 PM

IMO the paranormal series sucks balls, but hey thats my opinion.

my last seen film is:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Exorcist_3.jpg

probably the film i have re-watched the most out of the exorcist series. that hallway seen is rather cool. definitely recommended to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Decent Irish Horror film - filled with booze references and other Paddywackery. Great effects too. Weirdly - I watched it sober.

That and the appearance of the evil woman in black afterwards. The best part of the entire franchise.

He would probably do a better job than the 2011 version. The female lead would be stronger too.

Rotting Zombie 08-21-2012 08:28 PM

I saw All About Evil on the Chiller network last night. Good movie.

cheebacheeba 08-21-2012 09:17 PM

I'm seeing a preview screening of the new "Total Recall" in about 5 hours.
I'm presently about half way through the 90's version.

We shall see...

Sick Girl..with the luscious Misty Mundae, followed by cigarette burns...La fin absolue du Monde ,hehee! Udo Kier is fabulous though. His usual camp self .

hammerfan 08-22-2012 04:01 AM

Watched The Ward last night. Enjoyed it, and am surprised that no one gave it away. Was very surprised by the ending.

RE: Total recall '90 - I just noticed the mutant guy with the really fucked up head?
It's Hank from Breaking Bad.
That's one BB guy per movie.

Total Recall 2012
After seeing the original recently...this version was Kind of stripped down in some parts, and kind of expanded upon in others.
While it's still futuristic...it kind've lacks the more far out elements the "Mars" version of the film had.
It had gadgets again, though this time nothing seemed so "whoah..." as I remember feeling when I first saw the '90 version, as well the scale of the original just felt more epic.
The plot was less open to interpretation which I also feel was a slight failing in some way.
It's an entertaining enough film, there's not much "wrong" with it, and while I enjoyed it I wouldn't add it to my personal collection in any great hurry.
