Dont Be Afraid Of The Dark

Didnt mind it at all. Not sure id say i loved it but worth a watch. The little demon things reminded me of the creatures from "The Gate." Which made me want to watch that instead.

The Villain 04-24-2012 03:15 PM

Contagion

More interesting then i thought it would be. Good cast and actually suspenseful at moments.

loved that show myself....but it really hasn't aged well. Just watched an episode a few weeks ago about a headless motorcyclist. But it a still has its charms.

go to the 3 minute mark....pretty funny

That's actually my favorite episode from the weekly series. Corny an Hell, but still fun to watch

Captain Kronos-Vampire Hunter (1974)

Plot: IMDB
Vampire hunter and expert swordsman Kronos finds himself in a small village where several of the local young women have been found in an advanced state of age, their youth drained from them by a vampire's kiss. Kronos' search leads him to the Durward estate where he is met by the effete children of the apparently aged and sick Lady Durward.

Phantom's review: Probably the last great film from the original version of Hammer Films. A very underrated film. Great action, plenty of atmosphere and an different take on the vampire legend. Sadly the proposed series of films never happened. It would have been interesting to see where they took the series.

Couple of days sick in bed with a stomach bug had me catching up with some flicks on my hard-drive I hadn't watched...

Frat House Massacre

Thought this was a little overlong but I enjoyed it a lot. Nasty minded slasher throwback. Great stuff. Will be purchasing this one for sure.

Dear God No!

Not as good as the trailer/poster lead me to believe (in true grindhouse style!) but still trashy as fuck good fun.

Bad Ass

Solid old school action/revenge flick. Hoping to see Trejo in more leading roles. Vengeance should be out sometime later in the year hopefully it's just as good as this one.

Never Back Down 2

Miles better than the pretty average original. I thought this was awesome. Michael Jai White is the best action star to hit the screen in a long time.

Dahmer

Not bad at all. Glad this based on Dahmer himself rather than following a police investigation style format. Not as good as Ted Bundy or The Hillside Strangler but still worth a look if you're a fan of serial killer bio-pics.

The Wild & Wonderful Whites Of West Virginia

After watching Justified I found this pretty interesting... it definitely hammered home how much they prettied up the mountain folk for the show. Nothing amazing but it was an cool insight into another way of life.

Young Adult

My girlfriend seemed to enjoy it but I pretty much switched off early on because the main character was an annoying, selfish, and just plain unlikeable plus the film was riddled with the usual Diablo Cody terminal hipster bullshit (seriously fuck off back to the 90s).

Are you not a Hank III fan?

Its a pity you didn't watch Dancing Outlaw first to see how far Jesco had fallen..

Yeah I dig Hank III and Hasil Adkins. That tune he did about them is one of my favourites.

Dancing Outlaw is on my list of shit to watch. Looked pretty good.

The Avengers (2012)
Look, as a guy that's read the comic on and off for years and even went through a back-log of a lot of issues that were released before I was even born...It was hard not to find jusssst a few things that I'd have liked done differently.

What you got though was an iteration of the "origin" tale set in the present day, actually more closely resembling the "Ultimate" Marvel universe, with something of an amalgamation between that and the standard Marvel U for storyline.

You got (most of) the original founding members with a couple of absentees replaced by hm, "fairly" early origin characters that have been touched on in a couple of Marvels related films that have lead up to this one.

You got some fucking GREAT fight scenes.

Thor and Loki IMO were handled better in this film than their standalone - Tom Hiddleston actually outdid his previous performance as Loki.

You got a GOOD solid action film, and you got the one in-house fight that most fanboys really wanted to see.

The villain/s were maybe not the one/s I'd have ideally chosen (Hoping to see Kang the Conqueror in future) but they served the storyline well.

You got one "Mannnnn - thats BULLSHIT" moment.

You got pretty Whedon-esque pop culture references, and pretty snapy dialogue all around really.

You got "ragdoll". You'll see.

It was pretty action packed, and yes in "group" fight scenes they handled the team thing pretty well. Everyone gets fairly fair coverage/time.

You get HULK...kicking fucking ass better than either of the current standalone films. ANGRY hulk. The Ruffalo guy didn't do a bad job, though I preferred Norton.

Hm...it wasn't as epic as it could have been, but I'm sure that's at least partially my comic fan mentality.
They did pretty well.
I have to give it at least 7/10. Maybe 8.

I expected about a 5.

...and yes, as per most of Marvels films these days, there's a scene at the end of the first set of credits.

Thanks for the well thought out review. I will see this once all the frenzy dies down and it's not playing to packed houses.

You would think that a movie that featured zombie like Nazis living at the center of the world with an appearance of a robotic reanimated Hitler would elicit more than an " meh"

but that is the case with

"Nazis at the Center of the Earth"

Elvis_Christ 04-25-2012 05:45 PM

The Divide

Much better than I was expecting. Dark, grim stuff. Basically a post apocalyptic Lord Of The Flies with more than a few clichés but still one of the better films of it's type in recent years. Great to see Michael Biehn back on the screen in something decent.

Nude Nuns With Big Guns

A few annoying Tarantino/Rodriguez moments made me not enjoy this as much as I could have and made it a bit dated looking stylistically. But that aside it's one of the better new era exploitation flicks.

i really wish someone like rob zombie would film some reality based serial killer shit. that would be fun

well fucking a chick while shes choking from a plastic bag tight around head, isnt exactly gore anyway.but it is very disturbing to think that this shit actually happend.i also think with the real life victims familys and shit they would have to draw a line.to be honest they must get paid a shit load to get away with what they do show in these movies.
if you wanna no how sick the shit really got with the hillside stuff read the hillside stranglers by Darcey Obrian, darcey was a detective on the case.those two dudes were siiiiick mother fuckers man

Just caught this pretty decent Spanish Home Invasion Film (think Funny Games or the Mothers Day remake). Very tense and moves along a nice pace - not too predicable either...Its nasty and meanspirited as well :-)

fortunato 04-26-2012 02:34 PM

That's a pretty brutal poster.

There was quite an insane amount of boobs so I think you'll enjoy it :)

--------

The Samaritan (aka Fury)

This started out well but got a bit ridiculous/far fetched by the end. Samuel L Jackson was on form as usual and I thought it was one of his better roles in some time.

StevenBr 04-26-2012 03:00 PM

Which movie has a lot of boobs in it? You have to love them ;)

Angra 04-26-2012 04:18 PM

"The Cabin in the Woods" 8/10

Wasn't exactly what i hoped for, wich is a shame. Coz what i hoped for was pretty damn awsome.

Nevertheless, if the whole movie had been as crazy as the last third it might have ended up in my horror top 10. What ruined it the most for me was definitely the middle part which was something i think i've seen about 50 times before instead of being more like the "Cube" franchise. And honestly, not a whole lot happened inside that cabin.

That being said, this will probably be one of the most seen horror movies this year.

By the way.. am i the only one who was thinking Evil Dead when the party arrived at the Cabin? And am i the only one who was thinking Lovecraft at the end? :D

"Mysterious Skin" 8/10

Surprisingly unsentimental considering the heavy theme. I Liked that.

And i can't believe Joseph Gordon-Levitt didn't get more nominations for his strong performance.

Elvis_Christ 04-27-2012 05:49 PM

Mysterious Skin was great. Gregg Araki's best work along with The Living End and The Doom Generation.

-----

Rampart

Nice gritty character piece. Thought it was excellent.

Machete Maidens Unleashed!

Not nearly as entertaining as Not Quite Hollywood but still a good watch. I discovered a few films I hadn't heard of which was nice for a change. R. Lee Ermey's points about how Apocalypse Now grossly misrepresented and belittled what veterans went through was a valid point and it was refreshing to hear someone challenge it's place as a classic.

Never Back Down 2
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...R40214317_.jpg

I kept putting off seeing this until i read how much Elvis liked it. I gotta say i think the story played out better in the first one but this one was more exciting and the fight scenes were incredible. I liked the progression of the one character becoming the villain but i thought the final fight between the characters in the first one was better then this one. Still a really good follow up that actually continues the story instead of just having the same name.

The Villain 04-28-2012 03:05 PM

The Raven
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...R00214317_.jpg

I liked it but instead of being a movie portraying his work it seemed more like they just used his work as a gimmick for the movie. It's not bad but i'd much rather just read some of his stories.

wizard of gore 04-28-2012 03:08 PM

The fact that it's called The Beatdown probably doesn't help that ;)

Hm, not really great eh...
A few scoffs here and there, but it seems like all the intended laughs from the blatant vulgarity just seemed forced.
Nah...didn't much like it at all.

I'm completely with you on that.
It's like they've chosen him in secondary bits all the time over the last few years, and yeah I have to say he's never once made me laugh...I have a friend who's right into him that keeps insisting watching that show he's in now, but yeah...he's just shit...
