Definitely the 1989 TV adaptation is superior than this film, particularly plotting the story, characterization & even in terms of spook-elements. But this is a decent effort though. I haven't seen any Harry Potter film yet, so this is my first Daniel Radcliffe film and as a regular movie viewer I'm slight disappointed from his performance. There was sophistication for the role but throughout the film there's only 1 or 2 kind of expression (& sometimes even wooden!) I saw in his face which I think could be done with more varied approach.

But was it as good as Grave Encounters? :P

Tony Vilgotsky 02-24-2012 07:00 AM

Fetus. Really kicks the shit out.

Straker 02-24-2012 07:35 AM

Doghouse: Group of lads go on a weekend away, only to end up in a town where all the women have been infected by a virus and have killed off the men, zombie style.... Was kinda wary of watching this, mostly due to the fact it had Danny Dyer in it, which is usually the hallmark of a shitty film. Gotta be honest though, I found it pretty entertaining. Its over the top, and cheesy and it borrows alot from Shaun of the Dead. While its not a horror comedy in the same league as something like Shaun, its a decent film, easy to watch and worth checking out.

If you are a fan of CG-laden effects and visuals, an average time-waster. Some decent sequences and an unexpectedly short climax and the movie is over before you can say "cheese."

It's appalling to see Nicholas Cage go lower from the low rung he is already in. And he looks old, real old, for Johnny Blaze.

Nothing else to write about much - convoluted plotline, uninspiring direction and some really tacky characterisations and acting. Only redeeming feature is the effects.

If effects/visuals are not your cup of tea, avoid this.

Yeah the dog was great and the more i think about it the more i liked it. It really felt like i was watching an older movie instead of a recent one.

"Playback" 5/10

Mediocre at best.

"Unthinkable" 7/10

Surprisingly good, but could've been better if the director had dared taken it further. Would've been cool to see a more extreme developement in the characters of the terrorist and the torturer as well as the FBI agent.

ImmortalSlasher 02-25-2012 03:17 PM

The Reeds.

Another bad free movie on Fear net. I vaguely remember seeing pieces of this one on another channel. I think SyFy, the well known channel for crappy movies. However, I have a thing for swamps and had to check out The Reeds. When I passed out halfway in the movie, I should have known to just quit. But I watched the rest the next day only to see probably one of the worst twist endings ever. I have zero intent on watching the movie again. Did anyone here see this movie and get the ending? On the plus side, the movie does have a burning scene that is somehow better than the one in Revenge of the Sith.

Angra 02-26-2012 12:39 PM

"The Woman in Black" (2012) 7-8/10

FINALLY!!!!

The scenery was amazing, the imagination in scares wasn't. With a set-up like that this movie deserved so much, much more.
Also, Harry Potters flair for horror acting left some to be desired.

The story moved along a little too slow for my taste the first 30 minutes and most of the time in the village. But as soon as he arrived at the island it got entertaining for sure. Just too bad the director wasn't Takashi Shimizu. :)

Have you seen Five Fingers? Not as good as Unthinkable but a decent watch.

Ashes (2010)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/.../Ashes2010.jpg

A very decent indie effort where the plot revolves around Dr. Stanton, a doctor who's working on finding a cure for Aids. He's made some great progress but hasn't had the chance to fully test it on human specimens. Then one day a little boy admitted into the hospital, who's been stung badly by a jellyfish and is dying in front of his eyes. So as a last ditch effort he injects the boy with his special serum in hopes of healing the boy. The boy in turn bites him and thus the madness begins with 'Rage virus' symptoms all over.

Recommended.

Destroyer (1988)
Ok but a bit too cheesy-though it does have the original psycho Anthony Perkins in so that's a plus. But nowhere in the same league as the same year's Prison.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes.Good thrilling animal drama.

Night Train.

Another Fear net movie but some good actors are in this one. I saw Danny Glover and Leelee Sobieski in the titles so I decided to watch this movie. There is also an unexpected twist which is very interesting. It's not really horror except for something that one of the characters does at one point. The train shots are also all cgi so I guess the budget went to the actors. It's not the best movie but not horrible at all. I really like the twist. It is like something in other horror/psychological type movies.

I've almost watched this one a few times recently, after reading your comment thought I'd finally give it a whirl... Thought it was pretty good, it maintained a decent level of suspense and tension and avoided any overly cliche pitfalls.

Nothing new here. Neither better or worse than the formers.

The Woman In Black.

Pretty good. A lot of jumps and jolts which I didn't much care for (I'm more of a unsettling atmosphere kind of guy) but it was entertaining. Anyone else think the ending was a little...Fulci-esque?

Slaughtered. Almost absolute crap, very boring and not a bit impressing. Only the girls were good, the rest of the movie doesn't have such tits:)
P.S. Probably the first time when I removed the movie from my PC only because of its extreme weakness.

Dagon.

The opening of this movie has a beautiful and scary underwater scene. I thought the movie would be awesome from that scene. Also, whoever found the town is a genius. It feels like the town in Resident Evil 4. So do the inhabitants. Maybe Capcom was inspired by this movie. The town is the perfect setting for a horror movie. But then they introduce the main character. A guy who either can't act or was told to be annoying, bumbling, silly, etc. The female lead is beautiful and I wish she was in the movie a lot more. The story is pretty good but for the most part ruined by the main character and the silly humor that enters the story because of him.

I've never read a Lovecraft story. But I will one of these days. I've been curious about his stories since finding out that Ninja Gaiden on NES was influenced by the Cthulhu.
