Oh yes Dawn looks absolutely fantastic in Hi-Def. Which player did you get?

Story, acting, direction, visuals. Pretty much everything about it was solid.

Thanks for the rec, Ros.

Nice!

Thanks for the thumbs up, Roshiq and Angra.

I highly enjoyed it! Pretty entertaining with an unpredictable twist at the end...yeah, I didn't see that coming. A good comeback for John Carpenter.

Great to hear! I was waiting for a positive response before watching this. Now it is a must-see for me!

Highly entertaining sword play flick. The final scene, the battle sequence, lasts a long time and is totally engrossing. The setting for this final explosive stage is raw, violent and gripping. By the time the powder keg goes off, I found myself chomping at the bit to see some retribution.

In short, wonderful, emotive story telling with a superb climax. Check it!!!

Fabulous! I was a bit apprehensive about how Miike would handle this remake but looks like he's done an expert job. This is going into my must watches for this month. Thanks, Tony!

I was particularly impressed by the honest portrayal of how this small town dealt with something completely outside its experience. The raw low-budget, almost documentary feeling also helped to honestly impart the emotions of the situation far better than a slick Hollywood approach would have.

I agree....that's what I meant by "NO FICTIONAL HORROR".

Finale (2009)

I have read somewhere that the director spent 4 years on making this film. But sadly...it just turned out a complete piece of crap!

The Tunnel (2011)

Terror in the Tunnels of Sydney! A POV-Docu style Aussie 'underground' horror feature, not bad!

>>: B

The Woman (2011)

The sequel story of Jack Ketchum's Offspring and as it's co-written & directed by Lucky Mckee (MAY) so things get bit psychologically 'bloody' twisted this time. But the film takes time to build up its characters first and then...the last 30 minutes turns into quite a grotesque showcase of some grisly violence.

Red Riding Hood (2011)

The big bad wolf can talk!

The Shrine (2010)

On the half way of the film it seems like another pretty average cult horror feature but it turned out quite entertaining in the final showdown.

La Moustache (2005)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/.../moustache.jpg

One day, on a whim, Marc decides to shave off the mustache he's worn all of his adult life. He waits patiently for his wife's reaction, but neither she nor his friends seem to notice. Stranger still, when he finally tells them, they all insist he never had a mustache. Is Marc going mad? Is he the victim of some elaborate conspiracy? Or has something in the world's order gone terribly awry?

A very strange but interesting French movie that somewhat started with a Hitchcockian flavor but slowly descends into Lynchian surreal realm of madness, where nothing is ultimately provable. So it'll frustrate those who demand that a mystery be solved & all questions wrapped up with explanations, as the ending is pretty ambiguous where the audience need to fill the blanks with their own interpretations.

X-Men: First Class

Excellent. Best X-Men movie yet. They developed the characters better then any of the other movies and were able to focus on all of them instead of just one like Wolverine in the others. I hope they continue it like this.

Nifty little film about 26 men who volunteer to be either guards and prisoners for a research project (and 1000 dollars per day) based on psychological evaluation and human instincts. And things start to go wrong after the first couple of days...the whole experiment turns into a game of corrupted minds, bizarre sadism and shocking abuse.

Seemingly based on a real life incident, The Experiment is a very dark and unsettling film. Cinematography is top-notch as they capture the essence of a prison and the claustrophobia one feels inside it, coupled with some really fidgety shots in infra-red. Characterisation is almost perfect, with Forrest Whittaker standing out above the rest, with an equal brilliant performance by Clifton Collins, Jr. as Nix.

Outstanding film. Recommended to everyone in here who is ready to plunge into the dark psyche of man.

I've always wondered why they never made a film of this incident. I'll watch out for it.

roshiq 06-06-2011 01:29 AM

Though the event of the film based on Philip Zimbardo's Stanford prison experiment of 1971 but this is a remake of German film Das Experiment, made in 2001 which is overall better than this American version, IMO.

Thanks to V & all others whoever recommend this movie for HDC Top 200 of 2000s, otherwise I may not get interested about this film for a long time.

This is a beautifully made, very atmospheric & dark period horror piece from Finland. Bit slow burn but wonderful cinematography & intense characterization are two other great aspects of this movie besides its original & compelling story.

Never read the book, but I am pretty sure it's much better than the film. The premise is all about 2 couples getting locked inside a desolate hotel of sorts in the middle of nowhere, then getting terrorised by a crazy killer who demands dead bodies. Bland characters and a not-so-encouraging script, although the film has some good effects going for it (specially the first implied murder sequence).

Average.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Beautiful film, complimented by equally serene cinematography. While the plot is touching and makes you think, the film itself is a low-budget one and the makers have done a fantastic job utilising all the resources at their disposal.

See if you can find this.

Assault on Precinct 13 meets frustrated housewife! The premise is pretty silly, and Kim Basinger and Co. do a very unconvincing job of pulling it off. This is one female Death Wish you wish you hadn't watched.

All I can say is, this could have been better.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Wow! The effects in this film would give any Transformers film a run for it's money (considering it is after all a Michael Bay film). Giving a strong message out that this project is intended for franchise treatment, as is implied by the very-apparent ending, it is nevertheless a decent effort as far as the premise and effects are concerned.

Our hero has come to Earth escaping from aliens who have destroyed his home planet. Problem is, they have chased the 9 super-powered survivors (and their guardians) to Earth and they want them offed. Enter the effects. In-between we have an awkward tale of a fidgety teen trying to blend in AND be a part of the crowd in his new home planet. Needless to say, he finds a picture-perfect girlfriend, a geek friend who feels totally at ease with him, and a superbly faithful dog who...well, you just have to see the film.

Beware though, it is a teen's world, after all.

And more importantly, who the hell is Number Five?!

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, & Her Lover (1989)

http://pixhost.info/avaxhome/2007-03-22/PDVD_006.jpg

This film never ceases to make me writhe and wiggle around in my seat. A grandiose, gorgeous, indulgent, and often repulsive spectacle; also a passionate and fiery condemnation of the gluttony of power, especially that of ruling bodies. Consider that this film was made in the waning days of Thatcherism, a regime often criticized for its cannibalization of the lower class. This movie is one of those rare gut-punches, hitting you fast and hard, and with purpose. With gorgeous cinematography, incredible formalist sets (and costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier), fantastic acting, and a gut-wrenching finale, this is always a must-see for fans of potent, powerful cinema.

Mantis in Lace

A very slow sexploitation flick, I paused it about 30 minutes in and smoked a joint and found in more enjoyable that way.

House by the cemetry

A pretty good flick, not Fulci's best, but still freaky enough.

7/10

Snowtown

This Australian movie was very nasty, based on true events, it is a must see for anyone into serial killer flicks. I knew the story rather well and was amazed how well they pulled it off. One of those movies where what you don't see happen is more terrifying. Please everyone go see this if it is playing anywhere near you.

Calvaire - 7.5/10

From the very beginning there is a bleak, foreboding atmosphere running through this extremely competent piece of French film-making.

The protagonist doesn't have a lot of dialogue but acts the relatively helpless/hapless victim well. ***small spoiler*** It is the performance by the player of Bartel that steals the show with his light switch quick unhinging into pure lunacy.

The claustrophobia that was built only intensifies with the grim realisation that the local population are also sadistic, homicidal, delusional sodomites.

Finally, it really has to be said, without spoiling any of the scenes, that some of the photography is innovative and breath-taking.

La Herencia Valdemar aka The Valdemar Legacy (2010)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...emarlegecy.jpg

The story was fine & the movie has great production value but it was all build up for its upcoming sequel La herencia Valdemar II: La sombra prohibida aka The Valdemar Legacy II: The Forbidden Shadow. Seance, Bram Stoker...for a second it reminded me Mark Frost's The List of Seven but I guess from the very beginning of the idea to making this film into multiple parts they told the story in excessively detail...especially the story of Mr. & Mrs. Valdemar, which they could shown in a 5 to 10 minute flashbacks rather than dedicating more or less an hour for it.

Other than that it's a pretty decent one for the Lovecraft fans, IMO. Eagerly waiting to see the sequel as soon as it get a release widely.

Not exactly like that as the story was intense & told nicely and there were some decent 'actions' at the beginning & end of the film in a promising set up...the creepy Valdemar mansion. But yeah...they could add or filled it up with more terrifying activity/encounters which I guess they are saving for the sequel.
