:D:D...the original was one hell of a fun movie, I really need to give it a watch again.

We Are What We Are [Somos Lo Que Hay] (2010)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...hatwer2010.jpg

This is a beautifully shot and constructed, a family drama and teen coming of age story built on a horror premise...the controversial & hard to digest sub-genre of Cannibalism! But if the gorehound fans are looking for gore & gruesomeness all over, they need to be patient. This character piece with art house attributes delivered much more than a full blooded horror; though the cannibal sequences are deliciously graphic when they arrive at close to the end, the director takes his time to getting there. The story is about a family with an awful secret binding them together as well as tearing them slowly apart, it’s a dark exploration of family bonds & blood rituals where the family that eats together stays together! This is a shocking satire not only on family dysfunction but also on poverty, society and the law. Even the director himself described the film’s themes as "family disintegration, urban violence, and social deprivation, the fight among minorities to survive and be noticed."

A little more depth to the characters and some more understanding of the motivations may be needed but it would have taken away the brutal feeling of the film. But Somos Lo Que Hay aka We are what we are is still a very promising debut from a talented young director (Jorge Michel Grau) of Mexico.

Overall, one of the finest entry in the genre so far this year, IMO.

Star Wars Return of the Jedi

cdsmith15 05-10-2011 12:28 PM

Saw 7- I enjoyed it but it has departed from what it was about. The traps were supposed to be escapable to the people 'playing' the game. But in the last one that just wasn't the case.

13 Assassins (2010)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...assinsHDC2.jpg http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...assinsHDC1.jpg

There is a line in the movie from the leader of 13 Assassins, when he just got & accepts the assignment to kill an evil-sadistic lord..."I shall accomplish your task...with magnificence."
And like all those assassins Takashi Mike also did it with magnificence! There are many moments in this latest Mike Masterpiece that would make Sir Akira Kurosawa proud. It was that kind of old school fun, exciting and beautiful samurai Jidaigeki flick that rarely happened in these days. It’s a movie that you’d like to watch with all of your great friends who appreciate brilliant film making and love this sort of story. And I wish I could see it with you all.

13 Assassins Zindabaad! Mike, Takashi Zindabaad!

Well, I hadn't seen most of the F&F series except for the original, which I thought was a pretty decent entertainer. So I sat down since last evening...and here we go...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Still very decent entertainment.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Disappointing, slow fare. Less than average stuff.

Better than 2. Pleasantly surprised to see Sonny Chiba. Average, although some of the drift sequences had me whistling.

Fantastic opening sequence, but not much of a story. Some great car sequences.

and finally, earlier in the afternoon...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...DL._AA300_.jpg

Superb. IMO this is the only film series whose fifth part has actually outdone the original. Nice characterisation, a more-than-decent script, and really great car sequences which compliment the whole mood of the movie. A bit long than usual, but good stuff.

Arguably the best sci-fi actioner ever made in movie history.

Fearonsarms 05-11-2011 12:53 PM

The Unknown Trilogy (2008)pretty bad film made worse with a patronising pyschologist introducing the three stories.Avoid.

Lighthouse (2003)Standard horrorish thriller but credit to them for not making a "teen" slasher and at least making some effort with the atmosphere.

siorai 05-11-2011 04:29 PM

Tucker and Dale vs Evil: Holy crap is this movie fun! Yes, some of the acting is pretty bad. A few of the kids really deserve to die for that alone. The movie went in a direction that I really wasn't expecting at all. Honestly I wish it hadn't. what I had in mind would have been far better, but oh well. It's still a very fun movie to watch with some decently bloody bits here and there.

phantomstranger 05-11-2011 04:47 PM

1) "Thor"
Very Good. Lots of action and good FX. I enjoyed it.

2)"The Gunslingers" (2009)

Plot: Netflix (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Th...637#height1316)

While roaming the wild plains on a quest to find a cache of hidden riches, sharp-shooting bounty hunter Butch (John Elliott) and his outlaw companions come across a deadly gang with supernatural powers in this stylized Western. As the hunt for the gold treasure becomes competitive -- and violent -- Butch, morally questionable Rattler Fenton (Brad Allen) and vengeful Akemi (Narisa Suzuki) must confront the evil and powerful Mondego (Ben Hall).

Phantom's Review: Dear God, this movie is a turd! Terrible acting, horrible dialog, bad special FX, the only good thing about this film is 1) the music and 2) the scenery, outside of that , this film should be avoided at ALL costs.

They weren't deleted - the servers were resetted by the Owners and Admins.

My guess is - possibly an upgrade to new servers was going on since the past one week, and there was a software crash of the vBulletin platform, on which horror.com's forums are built on.

That's my mission statement too!:) Although, Slipknot probably said it best...

Dale And Tucker v Evil - 8/10

Almost as good a horror comedy as Shaun of the Dead. Novel premise with many laugh out loud moments. Highly recommendable slapstick!

The Complete Mightly Boosh - 9/10

I'm only through series 1 & 2 but so far it's awesome. Lots of bonus material and the episodes themselves are hilarious. Although, it is very much a 'love it or hate it' show.

swiss tony 05-22-2011 05:57 AM

The Hangover - 6.5/10

There are worse ways to spend 100 minutes. I'd say it just about achieves a 'decent' rating.

Do you have 100 more minutes to spare? They are making Part 2!

Hmmm, good question. It depends, do you have another, marginally better than average movie recommendation that will fit neatly into a 100 minute size hole in my viewing schedule?

If so, I'll take it. Lets face it, there's no way the sequal isn't going to be samey.

First 45 minutes were spent looking for the scares, and the next 45 minutes delivered things in a whoosh. Plot gaps and glaring errors aside, they tried their best to emulate the original as much as they can. But sadly, the original had something really big in it's favor - it's THE original!

(***SPOILERS FOLLOW***)

btw, how did they think they could explain the baby's growth to a walking toddler within a day?

And moreover, when such happenings are going on in the house, the father and daughter decide to stay all night at the vet's to stay with the dog and leave the mother and baby son unguarded?

Hmm...this doesn't digest well, Paramount and Tod Williams.

(***SPOILERS END***)

The original was creepy. Scary enough to keep me and the wife awake long after it was over. This one, well, we went to bed almost immediately after it was over, and sleep came within 10 minutes. Explains much?

There are a couple of scenes with really jumpy scares, but you have to wait 50-odd minutes to catch them. Other than those, it's a pretty much forgettable experience. I don't even remember most of it right now as I type this.

My Score - 45/100

"Next" 8-9/10

Really, really liked this one.

Loved the idea behind the story and the skillful way the director constantly toyed with it as well as the audience. Lots of cool diverse scenes, such as the cafe pick-up scene that brought back delightful memories of "Groundhog day". Also thought the dialogue was strong throughout, the pacing was perfect, and both Cage & Biels characters were downright adorable.

Must be my favorite Nicholas Cage flick to date.

The only issues I had with it was:

1. The ending was disappointing. I wanted more when the credits started to roll.

2. No sequals. :( :( :(

Elvis_Christ 05-23-2011 05:32 PM

I was quite disappointed in Parnormal Activity 2 and agree with your sentiments about it ____V____ especially how it just wasn't as creepy as the original. I can let the plotholes slide but I was hoping to be left feeling as uneasy as the original left me after watching it.

Tucker & Dale Vs Evil

I really enjoyed this one. Went into it blind just knowing it was a horror/comedy and had a blast. The best film of it's type I've seen in years. Dug the original concept of it compared to the majority of stuff released in this subgenre. Lots of fun with some very likeable characters.

I should have known it wasn't gonna happen.

They turned an original effort into a cash-cow and god knows what ridiculous things we are gonna see in PA 3 which is scheduled for Halloween this year.

And how long will they stretch this one? 7-8 like the Saw series?

Expect it to go downhill, fast.

I really need to watch this. It's been lying on my shelf for quite some time now. Hopefully this weekend. Thanks for the heads-up!

I just wanted PA2 to be longer- it felt rushed to me, while PA took the time to create atmosphere and let the suspense build.

I thought the setting was great and they had some great characters, plus the addition of the dog was a big plus which could have added some real spookiness into the atmosphere with it's instinctive behavior. I don't know...they could have done without the first 30-odd minutes and added some more suspense into the whole thing. Like you said, it felt rushed and as if no afterthought was given to the whole product on the editing table or the first screenings.

I wait to be proved wrong with PA3, although I severely doubt it.

roshiq 05-24-2011 05:08 AM

Perhaps I wasn't in right mood or I missed something there or whatever the reason but I saw the original PA only once & it left nothing much of an impression after I watched it then. Though I obviously found it interesting & a decent flick overall but at the end it was just another POV feature that they done pretty cleverly within their limitations. But yeah...the PA2 looked quite promising in the trailers and agree with V that it had a nice premise & characters that they could utilize with more added drama, tension or precisely more spookiness.

And who knows...may be we get to see the demon next time like the funny kind of way Wan showed in the INSIDIOUS. :D
