Unthinkable (2010). If the motivation for the whole endeavor had not become absurd at the movie's end this could have been a great thriller.

I'm actually pretty upset that The Town wasn't wasn't up for Best Picture this year - I would say that The Town is my second or third favorite movie of the year (definitely second to Black Swan, though possibly third to Despicable Me, which just makes me incredibly happy)... Could be that I'm biased; I'm from the Boston area and get a certain delight from watching actors who can get the damn accent right (it's not just about dropping your R's, by the way)... Or it could be that this crime drama was a really thrilling character piece with characters whom I honestly cared about. Jeremy Renner is utterly brilliant (definitely deserves the Oscar nod), and Rebecca Hall is incredibly sympathetic. And I don't care what people say about Ben Affleck - While he may be limited, he's talented within his sphere. And apparently a great actor, too.

I loved this film - I was on the edge of my seat, intrigued the whole time. Highly recommend it.

4.5/5

Yeah..it was well made with good characterization but I found the story bit cliched, I mean this kinda plot...bank robber/gangster friends/brothers become enemies/betray one another/tries to come up clean at the end for the love interest is pretty common in Bollywood films now a day with lots of dance numbers & songs.:)

Bad Boy Bubby (1993)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...dc/BBBubby.jpg

A retarded man child Bubby ventures into the outside world after being imprisoned in a 2 room house by his abusive mother for thirty years! This is one disturbingly funny and crazy story. You can't predict what's going to happen with Bubby in our quite "normal" world.

I'm not sure whether you have seen it or not but like to recommend it to EC, Ferox, NE, CG & PD.:)

"Godzilla: Final Wars"

Last (?) entry in the Godzilla franchise. The first hour is a little dull but the second hour kicks ass as Godzilla fights almost all the monsters in the Toho stable. (best scene: Godzilla destroying his American namesake) Overall, a fun film to watch.

It was the final installment. But now there's going to be a new American take.

I saw The Town and have to agree with Roshiq good film but not amazing but I can see why Chronogrl likes it I agree a little too cliched for my tastes but by no means bad. Finally watched Salo last night and it still won't leave my head haunting me like I have this forum.

Totally get where you guys are coming from - Honestly, I think I more have a soft spot from my Boston homies, which helped me overlook the weaknesses in the plot. :o

Pretty dissapointing affair from Jon Landis. I expected big things from this but it dropped the ball. Not funny enough - stupid Romomance element and also Not funny enough .

On Its defense there were a few LOL moments and a pretty cool cast (inc Chris Lee/Bill Bailey/Tom Wilkinson/David Schofield/Ronnie Corbett/Reece Shearsmith/Tim Curr etc)..

I thought I SELL THE DEAD did the same thing cheaper and better..

Duck, You Sucker! aka Fistful of Dynamite

Yet more Sergio Leone kickassery. Even with the horribly fake accents and excruciatingly long close-ups of eyes and faces, this movie is so much fun. I'm sure that there was at least a half hour of extreme closeups which really could have been cut without any detriment to the storyline at all.

Paranormal Activity - B
Not bad but lags a bit in places. Borrows heavily from BWP and a little from Ringu.

Great fun, good laughs and I really liked the effects, especially the gruesomeness of the Zombies.

My Soul to Take (2010)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ul-to-take.jpg

I honestly thought that this was pretty bad - All of the characters were 2-dimensional and unlikeable. And the ending was pretty lame. I really only watched it since many a SOUL on here had the review: "It wasn't THAT bad," which is sometimes all we can hope for out of a horror film... But I just thought it was kinda lame.

Oddly enough, I'd prefer a I Know What You Did Last Summer over this silly teen slasher.

Gone Baby Gone (2007)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...onogrl/gbg.jpg

After really enjoying The Town, I figured that it was time that I sit down and finally watch Gone Baby Gone and, honestly, I loved it. Definitely more complex than The Town, Gone Baby Gone explores a couple of pretty interesting moral dilemmas... Different concepts of Right and Wrong - Corruption for the Greater Good - And it was done fairly subtly and left ultimately ambiguous...

Casey Affleck was incredible as a Boston hometown PI and Ed Harris was simply phenomenal. My biggest qualm with the film, honestly, was Morgan Freeman - This is supposed to be some kind of gritty portrayal of Boston's Southie and here's Morgan Freeman as the chief investigator... Just didn't really fit in. I felt as though he was MORGAN FREEMAN leading the investigation, not Sargent Jack Doyle - They probably needed a big name, but I'd prefer someone who could actually pass as being from Boston (hey, Ed Harris did).

Also - Amy Ryan as the coked out mother was AMAZING - I had only seen her as Holly on The Office - Didn't realize that she had acting range. She was really fantastic.

Some of the writing was a little weak at times, but I found this movie captivating. It really made me re-question my stance on crime dramas (I used to name that particular cinematic genre as one of my least favorites) - Turns out, if it's a GOOD crime drama, it's a good movie.

MIlton (as in John Milton, geddit) is back from hell to avenge the murder of his wife and family. He literally drives out of hell too. This movie is dumb, cliched and predictable and I loved it it. The only thing that would have made it better if Chris Walken played Hell's agent instead of the guy from Black Hawk Down. The shoot out while still drinking and fucking is one of cinema's best scenes ever...

It did help that I had a 4 pack of cheap Polish Lager with me.

I hope the sequal is called Drive Angrier in 4D.

I'm with you on not being able to stand watching animal cruelty. Watched several episodes of the Masters Of Horror series and its like their obsessed with it. Still at least its not real unlike on the "Cannibal" films.

**Spoiler**As a low budget effort it was fine but I was somewhat disappointed with the ending. I guess they banned it for the "excessive gore & nudity" contents as well as there's some part when the killer started to murdering little girls here & there but the most disturbing part for me was when it was almost looked like he's going to "kill" an infant and the baby started to crying with bloods all over!**

Splice (2009). Even though this is a somewhat tired premise, Splice is one of those rare films that creates it own movie rhythm and for this reason alone it should not be missed by sci-fi fans. It knows that there is nothing really new here and acknowledges this with clever movie homages, my favorite being that given towards Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Far from perfect, it nonetheless offers subtle hints that are sublime if they are noticed but do not take anything away from the film if overlooked, giving the astute viewer an opportunity to give himself the occasional pat on the back. Many of life's confounding problems are examined on many levels, allowing the viewer to decide how much effort to put in it. The originality, and daring exploits, unfortunately cave in to the demands of economics, with the ending fashioned such that its trailers can be its sales pitch.

The story expects some viewer latitude such that it can tread on rather thin ice, but the rewards are more than worth it. Where plausibility wanes the essence of the scientific question gets furthered by questioning not only the blatant motives of the scientist, but maybe even his or her psychological drives to discovery, which leads to an uncomfortable realm where once again man gets to reflect upon his most difficult subject, humanity.

This movie is unfortunately carried by Brody and Polley. They are both great and more than shoulder the heft of this movie, but the other characters were relegated to such cliched caricatures that the movie loses part of its punch. This is too bad since their roles could have easily been fleshed up without much extra effort. Of course the real star of the show is Delphine Chanéac, and she absolutely nailed her chimerical role.

Writer/Director Vincenzo Natali still deserves much credit here. Making a movie that almost defines its own abstract cinematic texture is monumental. The photography was incredible but noticeably restrained, and though this allowed the story to determine the height of its significance, it did so at the expense of a more art house feel. This is not meant to be a denigration so much as to point out that the intent here was story over art proper, and I feel it was a wise choice. The effects were perfect. Never were they overdone nor held back, but instead were given just the right freight to help propel the story.

Overall this was a solid sci-fi entry whose ending catered to Hollywood and its bankers. But the original feel coupled with some rather daunting material covered is a decent enough trade-off to have this movie come to fruition.
