"5 Card Stud" (1968)
-Dean Martin, Robert Mitchum Plot: IMDB After a card shark is caught cheating, he is taken out and lynched by the drunkards he was playing against. Soon afterwards, the men who were in the lynch mob start being murdered, one after another; all by hanging. Who will be killed next and who is responsible? Is it one of the original party seeking to cover their accursed deed, or perhaps the mysterious Rev. Jonathan Rudd, who has recently arrived in town? Phantom's Review: Highly entertaining western mystery. Martin and Mitchum are terrific. A fun popcorn movie __________________ |

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...z9ZLOk9uXldINw MST3K had a bastard child. This is a really fun movie. The themes might wear thin towards the end, but the fun campiness is a riot for most of the movie. Poultrygeist http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...V9ao1U2QuZAq2Q Not as good as I'd hoped. The musical scenes are great and well acted, but a lot of the movie comes off as same old, re-hashed Troma. Not as good as Tromeo and Juliet or Terror Firmer IMHO. Still a decent watch, even if it's a little stale. |

"Warlock" (1959)
-Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn Plot: IMDB The town of Warlock is plagued by a gang of thugs, leading the inhabitants to hire Clay Blaisdell, a famous gunman, to act as marshal. When Blaisdell appears, he is accompanied by his friend Tom Morgan, a club-footed gambler who is unusually protective of Blaisdell's life and reputation. However, Johnny Gannon, one of the thugs who has reformed, volunteered to accept the post of official sheriff in rivalry to Blaisdell; and a woman arrives in town accusing Blaisdell and Morgan of having murdered her fiance. The stage is set for a complex set of moral and personal conflicts. Phantom's Review: Excellent western drama. Great acting, plot, cinematography and direction. One of the best. __________________ |
Terribly Happy (2008). Terribly Happy begins with a mythic tale told of an oddity introduced to this distant Danish town, then proceeding in its own fashion to explain the myth with the following story. A film whose genre is not to be pinned down, it dances around being a western, film noir, dark comedy, and a wicked tale comparable to Lynch or even the Coen Brothers. Oozing with symbolism, this smart little number begins with the common "fish out of water" premise, exposing our little fish to the ways of the town, ways not exactly friendly towards our protagonist's agenda. This town takes care of its own. As in all noir, his biggest problem is a problematic dame, sultry, sexy, and of course dangerous. With each twist and turn, our so-called hero only finds himself further bogged down in the quagmire of domestic shenaniganry, reminding us of the importance of the town's bog, a bog whose first introduction was in the intro's mythic tale. The acting was supreme throughout, with the lead's near deadpan expression punctuated with the occasional twitch or furrowed brow, hints of the tumult hidden within. The story was solid and fun, a story founded on well-known secrets that are to remain in the shadows. Fast-pace throughout, it never feels rushed, and there is just enough time to breathe before the next climatic moment. The music was discomfiting, a tad askew, just like the town. The direction and camera work were sublime, each smoothly supporting the other to create a seamless story. Not until the credits role does the comic side of this grim little film show its face; timing is everything.

I didn't get it. At all. Good performances tho, but too much yelling and screaming for my taste. And yes, as Stacilayne mentioned the camera work was quite odd to say the least. |

Daughters of Darkness (1971). This delicate slow-burner is more an artistic flourish with horror undertones than a horror flick proper. Eschewing a genre's unstated guidelines, Daughters of Darkness takes us on a sensual journey where the inexplicable, or maybe the ineffable, becomes the source of its eroticism. Blood is not made squeamish, but uncomfortably attractive. Antagonists shift places, back story developments lead to perfectly ambiguous dead ends, or even better, discomforting back alleys of ignominy, culture's ugly little secret kept hidden in the closet. The acting ranged from the supreme performance of Delphine Seyrig to the occasionally wooden Danielle Ouimet, but the artistic flair of the whole overpowers the particulars, and such trivials need not matter. The direction was sublime. Kumel's style is what brings this near-classic to the forefront of envy by its competition. The camera work deserves more than a mere mention. Each and every shot was composed with care, utilized color and/or shadow to the fullest, and employed techniques to extract the ethereal sensation of the moment without ever feeling ostensibly ambitious. And the score ranged from deliciously cheezy to eloquent depending on the screen's mood. In all, the Daughters of Darkness is a masterpiece that should be studied but never copied. Merci beaucoup. The Haunted Mansion.
Boy, Eddie Murphy goes out of his way to be terribly annoying. No surprises there. Didn't find even a single gag to smile at least once, let alone laugh. Piranha 3D. Water slaughter! "Just when you thought you were completely safe to go into a lake's waters..." |
Out of the Past (1947). Opening in the sleepy town of Bridgeport, the tone seems more appropriate for an episode of The Walton's than a film noir classic, but the shadows are not held back for long. In rolls Paul Valentine, an unctuous character from our hero's past, a city-slickin' smudge quite out of sync in this idyllic town whose industry is trout fishing. The story employs a simple yet wonderful mix of timeline and narration, ploys that oft not work but that are supreme in this director's hands. The story itself keeps the viewer just one notch behind the moment, with perfect twists and turns and never a dull moment. Even more snappy than the story is the dialog, with poetic delivery on all accounts. Robert Mitchum is stellar in this role he was made to play, a witty detective with but one shortcoming, a stupidity expressed in the company of dangerous dames, and Jane Greer's role proved just the chemistry for Mitchum's IQ adjustment. No greater dame noir has better lit up the screen, with her understated performance of ostensible alliance shifts only belied by the slightest of glances. Jacques Touneur's direction is nothing slight of masterful, and this was probably the best work of his career. With the wholesome out-of-doors mingling with the seedy underbelly of city life, the shadowy world of the latter proves too dank a character, leaving its stain on the otherwise pristine countryside. These two worlds make better neighbors than friends. In the end our protag must come to a choice between that which is good and that which he is only good for. No greater ocean could fill this chasm.

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...jidhdc/13T.jpg An excellent & beautifully tense French thriller with an art house treatment! What a game of gambling! Loved it.:) >>: A 13 (2010) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...hdc/13US-1.jpg Like the terrible way George Sluizer remade his masterpiece (Spoorloos aka The Vanishing) in Hollywood, Gela Babluani almost did the same thing here to his own original work. May be it wasn't actually that bad as I'm saying but it wasn't actually a good experience at all to watch it just after seeing the original. I think their intention to get too smart with the story & the characters mostly done the damage along with a bunch of wrong cast. >>: C- |

Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny, & Girly (1970). Girly is a Mother Goose and Grim Fairy tale gone horribly and delightfully wrong. The slow buildup in its incipience lays the foundations of a family ostensibly perfect but deeply tragic, with the elements of tragedy to be foisted upon anyone unfortunate enough to stumble into this sinister family's neighborhood. Once the incredulous nature of the family is accepted, what follows is but a brilliant and black comedy with an unsettling nature. Girly not only drags the viewer along, but lures us into the agency of misconduct in its sordid and naughty affairs, rooting for the most seductively corrupted Girly. The story is nothing short of zany, but its premise is easily swallowed once the savor of this cinematic dish is tasted. As the thick of the plot develops, nothing is apparent or predictable, leaving us nothing to do but relish the next bout of mischief. The acting was splendid, with Vanessa Howard leading the fray, seamlessly changing her polar deportment like a diva changes outfits. The rest of the cast is just as delightful, but it is Vanessa that captures the dark shadows in our hearts. The sing-song dialog only adds to this inappropriate affection. The direction is magnetic, taking an outlandish premise and crafting it into the darkest of comedies, where backstory and plausibility are thrown to the wind in order to exact the most devious pleasure possible. The camera occasionally flexes its prowess, but for most of the run time it seems happy to take a back seat and let this audacious dispatch tell the story without need of overbearing celluloid arrogance. As this flick finally begins to wind down, its denouement sets aflame another volatile fuse for our imaginations to cogitate upon, more shenaniganry to be explored after the eject button has been employed. Merci beaucoup. Genruk |

"House Of Dark Shadows"
One of my favorites |
Purple Noon (1960). Where other flicks merely take a stab at creating a psycho-thriller Purple Noon succeeds admirably. No gratuitous violence, chase scenes, explosions and such are needed, but instead attention to the actual unraveling of the story. It doesn't even know that it is such a thriller. Of course, much of its success can be attributed to Alain Delon. His cool-headed and calculating performance is belied by his incredible good looks. Attractive people, so the minds conjures, are simply not capable of nefarious deeds. And yet all the makings of a sociopath determinedly focused on some naughty business are there for all to see, character and audience alike. In fact, it is the incongruity with perceived reality that lures us into cheering for Delon's Mr. Ripley, even though his intentions are clearly far from good. Without Delon this piece might not have succeeded so. Of course, the supporting cast was magnificent from top to bottom. Even minor players turned out compelling pieces. The directorial impress of Rene Clement can be no more evident than in Purple Noon; everything works through ostensible simplicity that belies the complexities of such a sublime creation. The cinematography here was no less biting or breathtaking, with the sailboat scene about as harrowing a piece as has ever been done. The minimalist score was simply perfect, leaving me with something to whistle my way back to reality whence this fine cinematic triumph had found its dock. Merci beaucoup.

Ex Drummer (2007). Initiated through an exercise of irritation, this entry merely sets the mood for the viewer to best take in a film of the dregs of Belgian society, what could have been the circus freaks of yesteryear, such that we can tolerate the barrage of insults, violence and obscenities that permeates the collective filth that accumulates at the bottom of society's garbage pail. Add to this a highfalutin character whose agenda seems only to find amusement at the expense of even more suffering and we have the premise of Ex Drummer, a film that is likely to find short company in the ring where the heavy weights are scaled in their capacity to offend. What seems merely some glorious effort to be obnoxious slowly and surely reveals that no other means could have expressed this story with authenticity, to be other than derelict punk rock would be to compromise, a maneuver that would be quickly sniffed out by the true cinephile. As the story finds its way, it seamlessly flirts with multiple genres, from mocumentary to horror to fantasy to god knows what else. The initial insults to the viewer become requisite metaphors, a symbolic euphemism to define a class of mankind best left to the other side of the tracks. The acting was superb, each and every discomfiting character doing his and her utmost to revel in social disgust all to the horror of the audience. The direction was initially over-the-top insane, but as stated, no other means could have been true to form. The effects upon one's composure by the end are nigh palpable. The camera work is to be lauded. Every scene captures the mood perfectly, from vicious cruelty, abject despair, lurid sexuality, to the capricious outbursts that are to be expected from the urban peasants that are the real stars of the film. Even the protagonist is captured perfectly, a cold and calculating character that is captured by a cold and calculating lens. A reprieve for the soul is occasionally offered by way of the soundtrack. In between the apropos thrashiness, an almost melodic medley oozes out to help the viewer collect himself, to realize that no exercise in cruel futility is being played upon him. This film is not joke where the punch line is only to be enjoyed by its creators, but instead a savage look at two elements of life that rarely find company and for good reason.

Black Swan
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6..._poster_01.jpg Wow. Just - Wow. The words "stunning" and "mesmerizing" barely do this film justice. I had heard that this movie was getting rave reviews, but my raised hopes did not even meet how phenomenal this movie is. To tell you the truth, I was torn about Darren Aronofsky prior to seeing this movie - I found Requiem for a Dream to be incredibly bleak, but a piece of art in its own right. Pi I found interesting, The Fountain I couldn't stand, and The Wrestler was incredibly disappointing for me. But something that I can grant Aronofsky is that he is definitely a director with a distinct point of view, and every film has its own directorial style... Black Swan is no different - An incredibly intense slow-burner, this character-driven psychological thriller is completely different from Aronofsky's previous works, this time taking a page from Hitchcock. Black Swan is dark, deeply disturbing and passionate, truly a film that will keep you on the edge of your seats. Coupled with the striking backdrop of Swan Lake, this character piece is at times horrifying and breath taking. Quite frankly, I haven't seen Natalie Portman this astute. Ever. Hands down, this is the best movie of 2010. Best Movie Best Director Best Actress Hands down. Loved it. Go see it. Immediately. 5/5. |

Doghouse (2009). Doghouse is schlock horror that works on two levels. Of course the first enjoys a base level of masculinity where 30 somethings that are stuck in puberty are thrown into a horrorfest that just begs for some misogynist hat tricks. Doghouse delivers here without flinching, but it surprisingly does so without being too offensive. Don't get me wrong, leave the girlfriend at home unless this is part of your insidious plans to break it off with her. On another level, whether conscious or not, Doghouse captures some truths of the incongruity of men and women, at least in terms of the male perception of women and his inherent fears of feminine stereotypes. Jung might have had a say in the creation of these feminine archetypes and the deep seated fears that fester in our emotionally retarded gender. Jake West stays true to form given some enhanced production value and Doghouse never pretends to be anything more than a horror comedy, comedy that works for the most part. The premise gives birth to many avenues of misogynist exploitation, and these roads are explored with the verve of a schoolboy looking through his first smutty rag. The acting was enjoyable, with notables Danny Dyer leading the fray and the ever enjoyable Emily Booth threatening to snip away our manhood. The gore-o-meter readings should be sufficient to satisfy most gore hounds. And though the ending was a bit of a letdown, the fun beginning and spoofs that follow more than make this a stupid good time for any testicular laden biped. Merci beaucoup.
