The Happening

*SPOILER* Pesky trees ! *END SPOILER*

4/10

Shark Zone

The Sharks in this roared like lions.

4/10

Shark Attack III:Megalodon

The Shark in this growled.John Barrowmen was hilariously unconvincing as the straight hero.

4/10

Mega Piranha

Disappointingly the Pirahna neither roared or growled, what they did do was suck ... but in a curiously enjoyable and entertaining way. This film is exactly what you would expect from The Asylum, ridiculous storyline (Genetically engineered faded 80's pop star bothering giant Pirahna escape into the Orinoco river, head for the ocean, eat people and property for no good reason etc,etc ),terrible special effects, hilariously bad acting, laugh out loud dialogue,OTT set pieces(Pirahnas attack Battleship!) and they even squeeze in a couple of gratuitious tit shots! Epic!

It's crap,but it's fun crap 6/10.

Tell Tale

Not great but not horrible. Only watched b/c of the Poe reference, didnt expect much so wasnt really let down. Worth watching if you have Netflix. I wouldnt go out and spend money on renting it though.

Oh well

Murder Set Pieces- unfortunately the cut version. Where can I get the movie the way it was supposed to be seen?

The Haunting of Winchester House-only moderately interesting but dont waste your money. If you have Netflix or Zip maybe give it a look

To celebrate my rediscovery of the disc, I just watched a double bill of Halloween 4 and 5.

Defendor (2009). Threatening to be a parody of comic book proportions, Defendor seamlessly becomes a serious and sentimental action flick with comedic overtones. Setting the stage for moral grandstanding, instead this one brings to light both sides of the vigilante question with balanced aplomb. The story was fresh, and any shortcomings were eschewed by the talented cast. Woody Harrison was outstanding in a role that somehow captured the subtle contradictions of a troubled character. Kat Dennings worked with a slightly unbelievable role and brought it to life in an adorably duplicitous fashion. Elias Koteas' role as the nasty antagonist was just as solid. First-time director Stebbings' efforts were rewarded with a memorable flick that should serve as solid vocational stepping stone for further endeavors. Merci beaucoup.

Of the people I know who've seen it, it appears to be a good film.

How WAS that?
I've been tossing up whether or not to see it...

If you liked this though, you might wanna check out a show called "The Good Guys", seems to be a little along the same lines. It was originally intended as a movie like 10 years ago to reintroduce the buddy/cop genre, but got turned down...the writer Matt Nix has since went on to do a pretty successful series (burn notice) so I guess that gave him clout enough to get another series. Got Tom Hanks' son in it, as a "fresh" cop partnered up with one that's kind of stuck in the 80's, is a huge walking stereotype, pretty funny. It's great fun, kind of like a modern day Odd couple, with more guns...

I last watched "Encino Man" which I hadn't seen for years. Hm..."ok"...not really what I'd call a comedy classic but it was fun to revisit something I first saw when I was about 13? Ah, back in the days before everyone dreaded the next Brendan Frazer release...

It's a lot better than Cop Out. Michael Keaton was great in it but you've basically seen it if you've watched the trailer. I still enjoyed it and there was some pretty funny shit here and there. I just ganked a screener of it...

Cool...'cos I actually thought cop out was alright...so I'll probably really like this.

I thought it was more cleverly done in comparison. Decent throwback to the 80s odd couple cop flicks but more heavy on the humor. I think the best is still to come with the modern incarnation this type of film and it's just finding it's feet.

cheebacheeba 08-31-2010 11:33 PM

Kansas City
Later day Altman film that despite a stellar performance from Harry Belafonte failed to engage. Great period atmosphere from Altman, but Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance was too mannered and the story wasn't that deep.

Meteor Man
Despite some questionable moral double standards in the big finale' I found this Robert Townsend comedy enjoyable. Great performances from Robert Guillaume, James Earl Jones (hilarious) and Frank Gorshin.

Felon (2008). The start of this movie begets an ambiguous sense of its worth. The shaky camera, the typical :things gone horribly wrong" scenario, and then the downward spiral all hint that it is time wasted. Suddenly, all of that evaporates and instead the screen's glue jumps out and ensnares the viewer until the final scene, leaving us emotionally drained but satisfied nonetheless. The story, which must have been taken from the real life Corcoran State Prison fiasco, provides the perfect palate for a study of the American Penal system. While the stereotypes of prisoners and guards etcetera are evident, the main characters are all portrayed as normals humans, at least at some point in their lives. The acting was pheno, with Dorff, Kilmer, and Perrineau all giving outstanding performances. The script was smart, the direction superb. Once the camera calmed down it became icing to our visual cake. The story was a tad heavy-handed as to its message, but in this case maybe it needs to be. Merci beaucoup.

Burnt Offerings (1976). The awkward tone of this flick builds throughout, creating an atmosphere of disquieting creepiness that cannot be repeated. The difficult, chunky, and obtrusive acting somehow finds disturbing repose in this haunting little flick. Then there are the flashbacks- absolutely unsettling in their creation of a terror of horribly unknown origins. As said, the acting was weird to say the least, but even the scenes infused with bouts of overacting were appropriate for effect. The story was solid, though a slow burner to say the least. The direction was solid, and the camera work, leaning towards lots of low camera angles, was spot on. The score helped add to the slowly building terror. The ending was brave and committed, and wonderful. Merci beaucoup.

Stephen Kings Thinner for about the 20th time. I don't know why but I love this flick.

some movie called "Dark Floors" terrible special effects but the story is good

psycho d 09-03-2010 07:28 AM

The Piano Player (2001). Director Michael Haneke has a penchant to take complex human issues and paint their essence in an abstract and revolting manner. This flick is the epitome of such an endeavor. The overall themes of this flick are only the window dressing of the disturbing psychological makeup of our highly unlikable protagonist. More so, the disquieting harshness of character are sublimely expressed in the cold countenance of our character, where intense moments of smoldering calm belies the twisted volcanoes of tumultuous emotions just barely contained and later expressed in the most revolting manner. The turbulence of this movie is accentuated with polemic scenes both subtle and extravagant. The caliber of acting was explosive, with Isabelle Huppert's performance a level above brilliant. Annie Girardot's role as the overbearing mother was on par with our emotionally convulsed heroine. Haneke's direction was as expected, bilious and with painful attention to any and all disturbing details. The sound quality is of a harsh nature which only adds to the voyeuristic nature of his flicks, ensconcing the viewer in where he does not belong. Definitely not for everybody, this Haneke addition is impressive indeed. Merci beaucoup.

Mr. Nobody (2009)

Mr Nobody, Nemo Nobody, is now 118 years old, the last mortal on earth in 2092, and he is about to die. Questioned about his life on his death bed by a journalist that sneaked in the hospital, he tells the stories of his lives. Yes, lives, his three lives, his three destinies between which he was unable to choose from. Three very different existences conditioned by apparently meaningless decisions. Three paths, three fates.

http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/8527/nobody1.jpg http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/6484/nobody2.jpg

Confusing and dazzling at the same time, director Jaco Van Dormaelī's Mr. Nobody is a definitive mind blowing movie experience that revolves around the notion of choice, the consequences of our decisions that questions and tries to point out...what our lives are made of. Like Nemo Nobody at the age of 9 has to choose between leaving with his mother or stay with his father, the starting point of the exploration his available destinies. Unable to decide, he chooses both and takes us for a ride through an immensity of possible...our very human tales of love, loss & grief.
Bit lengthy but this beautifully complex story also illustrated through the scientific concepts like Big bang theory, nature of time, the eventuality of the big crunch and the complexity of quantum mechanics.
With stunning photography, good cast and a solid sweet soundtracks Mr. Van Dormael created a masterpiece that may not be the exact but somewhat able to give you a vibe of some of our favorites like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or The Science of Sleep.
On the last note like to add here Van Dormael's quote about Mr. Noody: "My producers don't like me saying it, but it's really a big-budget experimental film about the many different lives one person can live, depending on the choices he makes. It's about the infinite possibilities facing any person. There are no good or bad choices in life. It's simply that each choice will create another life for you. What's interesting is to be alive."

Recommended to Alky, D, V, NE, Fortunato, Chrono and others who have interest to check out this sorts film.
