Blood Surf
A silly little movie. Best part is the guy doing a really bad imitation of Robert Shaw.... |
The Forbidden Photos of A Lady Above Suspicion (1970)
http://www.dvdverdict.com/images/cov...ddenphotos.jpg A pretty nice giallish thriller with a simple suspense story & 2 gorgeous euro babes. Liked it. >>: B+ |
"Valhalla rising" 4-5/10
The artsy fartsiness reminded me a lot of Antichrist. Just not as weird in story. |

Decent little thriller written by Brit TV scribblers Brain Clemens and Terry 'Blake 7' Nation and directed by the guy who did the Phibes film. 2 nurses take a bike trip in France only to be stalked by a psycho. Keep an eye out for Betty from Some Mothers do 'ave em.. |

The Night Stalker (1972). This made-for-television movie has got teeth. This was simply a notch above most TV movies, with no agenda besides entertainment. Not really a horror flick proper, this is more about a reporter and his dogged attachment to the story. The acting was fine, the direction solid. For an idiot box production the camera work was pretty good. Overall this was 74 minutes of sheer fun. Merci beaucoup.

Mind-blowing. I have been well and truly swept off my feet. Going back soon for my second viewing. * * * * ½ |
The Horseman (2008)
This Aussie flic has teeth. A father (Peter Marshall) is out for revenge after his daughter dies from a drug overdose after participating in a porn shoot.
This a very good film from Oz. Its intense, brutal and during the final act unhinged borderline torture porn. Reminded me of Paul Schraders Hardcore. Its worth your while. Cheers |

Isolation (2004). This sticky little nasty takes a Holstein and makes it scary, quite an accomplishment. The farm atmosphere was pleasantly realistic, with mud everywhere and the requisite preg check an icky affair for those not accustomed. While the characters were left flat, this one was about pacing and a building sense of tension. The story was sparce and only gave enough info to keep us intrigued but wonderfully confused as to what could have possibly gone so wrong. While the POV camera work likely annoyed some, it was more than enjoyable to this viewer. The nasty itself was a mess of a creature, a wonderfully slimy affair made sans CGI. Overall this was a an enjoyable entry to the horror genre. Late.

Kenny
A quality mock documentary from Australia about Kenny a port-a-loo plumber. A film crew follows Kenny around as he goes about his daily business which includes supplying toilets for outdoor festivals, motor races and the Melbourne Cup. The highlight being Kenny's first ever trip abroad to a 'Cleaners and Pumpers' convention in the US. I really enjoyed this film. Kenny is an honest, genuine, friendly and overall great bloke with the patience of a saint as he copes with rude customers looking down on him and his job, an ex-wife from hell and an ill father who cant stop pointing out Kenny's lack of ambition and under achievements. There is a great flow of quality one liners from Kenny which will have you laughing along regularly as he brings his honest, matter of fact views on life to whatever moment he finds himself in. Very good film, try to catch it. |
Dr. Strangelove (1964). Stanley Kubrick has indeed performed a miracle here by capturing the tragic absurdity of human nature in the form of cinematic satire. What is amazing is the temerity engendered in making fun of one of the most feared subjects ever conceived by mankind. The story was wonderful, but it was the acting that made it so. Peter Sellers kills his three parts, George C. Scott delivers an over-the-top performance accentuated with facial expressions that are hilarious. Sterling Hayden’s role was a piece of serious hilarity. And Slim Picken’s role was fantastic, with one on the most memorable scenes in film history. Let us not forget the eye gracing beauty of Tracy Reed as Ms. Foreign Affairs. Everything about this movie was simply perfect, an explosive classic that will never go out of style. Ashe.

A Clockwork Orange (again)
Saw this classic again. Its still ahead of its time. Between the classical music to Tangerine Dream, the ultraviolence and the "enriched" milk, this movie cant be beat.

The Night Strangler (1973). The perfect sequel to The Night Stalker, this one somehow parallels the basic architecture to the first while remaining fresh if not unique. The humor is perfectly balanced with its creepy tone. The solid story coupled with a redoubtable cast elevates this wonderful flick out of the realms of your typical made-for-television slush movies. Of course, it is the strong character of Darren McGavin that pulls up the pants of The Night Strangler, a bulldog of a reporter whose intuition and intelligence are forever eclipsed by his curiosity, believably leading him to enter worlds best left unentered. With an ending shot in an incredibly eerie set, it seems likely that our hero has run out of ink. Merci beaucoup.

Paranormal Activity: First watch, thought it was pretty good. Squeezes every ounce of tension out of simple effects. Plenty of scares generated from simple sound and lighting, placing the emphasis on the unseen rather than seen. Didn't care much for the tedious relationship sterotyping though.

Started to watch Up in the Air but turned it off as seemed no more than a typical "there's more to life..." drudgery. Now i'm wondering if i should have given it a fair shake.

Re Up in the Air
No you are not wrong. A summary: content and bored, meet new person, u feel something, take a chance, get burned back to content and bored, the closing credits over. This has been done before.

The Road
Good flick, pretty sad though. Followed the book almost perfectly, the wife says. I haven't read it.
Very bleak and dark movie, but good. We both enjoyed it. |
the last house on the left (remake)
zulu dawn it's alive (remake) the usual suspects |
Inglorious Basterds
I can see why Christoph Waltz won so many accolades, he was superb in this. The opening scene in the french farmhouse was brilliant and was the best part of the film which, overall, is patchy. Michael Fassbender was the other highlight as the British spy but Brad Pitt, Im afraid, was pretty awful, as were all the so called basterds who came across as a gang stupid idiots somehow evading capture in the French countryside for years. That said, its still the best QT film since Pulp Fiction and well worth catching. Predators Enjoyed it, plays out along fairly expected lines but it looked good and had good characters., Adrien Brody's dark knight voiced aside! probably the second best Pred movie behind Predator. |
Deadly Prey
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0kP_h7PEJ9...ction+Blog.JPG Trashy 80s flick that's a mix of Rambo and Hard Target. Action packed & lots of fun. |
La Femme Nikita (1990). Luc Besson manages to take a rather mundane story and infuses it with so much style that one forgets its mediocrity. This is not a dig, but a compliment. Nikita is a thriller of sorts, but also a story of the dregs of society coming to find her own sense of humanity. When the story threatens to be come predictable, it refrains nicely from doing so, even flouts conventions by simply moving on as opposed to wasting precious film with unnecessary scenes of crises overcome. The characters are perfectly portrayed, with a convoluted love story both tender and sadistic. Jean Reno sort of steals the show at one of the pivotal moments for our heroine, but it only adds to the complexity of the emotional side of the story and forces the viewer to keep up. Shot composure was incredible, where even the prosaic becomes a source of fascination. The score, while a tad 80s, adds to the story instead of just being an afterthought. With Besson at his finest, this is a must see for all lovers of the cinema.

Joshua
Psychological thriller about a 9 year old boy slowly causing the destruction of his family after the birth of his sister. The boy is an extremely intelligent sociopath, his parents gradually worn down by his manipulations and the burden of a newborn child. Its a very slow burner with a great deal of time taken to build the tension to reasonable effect. I believe this film was billed as a an Omen type but its not, there is no supernatural or OTT elements just one little boy devoid of feeling slowly driving his parents to the edge. Its an OK film, worth a viewing. Sam Rockwell is more than capable as the father and carries this film along quite nicely. |
had my first "drive-in" movie of the season...that's where I take my projector out in the yard....some beers on ice, lawn chairs, and some snacks.
was planning on a double feature of Dirty Mary Crazy Larry & I Drink Your Blood but I got a late start and only managed to get one movie in |
The farmhouse sequence was great but....

Like I said elsewhere this is one of those flics where you either love or hate it IMO it was just a waste of time. If you want to see a true skewering of the Nazis look at the musical number in The Producers. QT will never be Mel Brooks Jackie Brown is ten times the movie IB was IMO Cheers |
High Tension (Haute Tension) (2003)--5/10
A well made, suspenseful movie--up until the end. I have less and less patience for movies that throw out a "gotcha" twist at the end, and expect you to believe it's "clever" or "imaginative". The Uninvited (2009) did this kind of twist right; High Tension did it wrong. |

Tarantino should try his hand at writing videogame scripts/dialogue...I'm kind of sick of his attempts to make films as good as his first few. Batman - Behind the Red Hood Probably DC's best animated feature yet. Ties into the overall history of the character/s and a certain pivotal event but can surely be viewed as an independent feature without too much DCU familiarity. Gets pretty dark, perhaps more-so than Nolans work... Fans of Batman, go buy it. |
Public Enemies (2009). What could have been a great movie has been relegated to a decent watch, with the most impressive aspects being the cinematography, which was amazing. Too bad this movie could not settle upon one theme, or even the story, and see it through. The most outstanding incongruity was that Depp's and Bale's accents sounded like constipated impersonations of Keanu Reeves. That humor gave way in the first ten minutes. Late.
