John Carpenters Village of the Damned
Not bad at all, its not as creepy as the 1960s film but does do it some justice. The child actors were particularly impressive amongst a fairly solid cast. |
May - Die Schneiderin des Todes
Now this one I saw on a lot of "best" lists so I was intrigued and Netflixed it. I was baffled at first (esp. by Ana Faris), But Bettis' acting carries the day as she is so believably sick (and very cute in a dented sort of way). Somewhat predictable, but the cinematography is great and it does have some fine chilling moments. How do I attach photos to my posts? Image Shack or something like that? ~M~ |
Sunset Blvd. (1950). The title of this one is a subtle indication of one of the profound themes of this Hollywood classic. Called the grandfather of flicks which dare to divulge the dark underbelly of Hollywood, this might be one of the finest movies ever shot. From the opening scene to that sublime ending, everything works magnificently. The driving force of this one is in part dignity as it turns to madness. Holdin and Swanson and Stronheim are simply perfect in their parts. The direction and photography are superb. The script was wonderful, being at times subtly scathing or darkly humorous. Even the seemingly absurd scenes are necessary and compelling. Simply a perfect movie experience.

I remember the first time I saw this, and Bettis was first introduced I thought "If I have to watch this person for an hour and a half, I'm turning this off. Then you see her behind the tree and realize, OK she's hot." She's also a real sweetheart in person. She signed my May Poster "Fuck You George Snow" If you enjoyed May for the character study, check out TEETH. The co-star performances are pretty weak, but Jess Weixler is great and the story is excellent. |
Watched Creepshow, not really horror imo but a great watch.

Atomic train Caught some of this on TV this afternoon, wasn't too horrible although I quickly left the building when the post explosion survival crap kicked in. |

--- The Runaways I don't know much about the band's history so there was bound to be liberties taken I'm sure. But anyways I thought this was a decent enough rock bio flick. |
Phenomena (1985). As far as the story goes, this was a mess of a movie. In the realm of unique, this bizarre little flick gets a higher score. As to gross factor, it ends up with a high score. On a bright note, We get to see a young and cute Jennifer Connelly in her third role. Adventurous and quirky, for Argento fans this is a must see. Others might want to steer clear. Personally this was my least favorite Argento flick to date. Late.

District 13: Ultimatum
Enjoyable action flick, not a great deal of substance and not as good as the first but some excellent action set pieces and likable main characters. Briefly, two men ally themselves with the five gangs controlling District 13 in order to stop corrupt government officials destroying the entire area. Well worth a watch |

The Killer Inside Me - An adaptation of the Jim Thompson noir novel from the 50s, starring Casey Affleck. Brutal and very well executed. Recommended if this kind of genre work is up your alley.

Jonah Hex (2010)
Enjoyable. I'm not overly familiar with the source material - never really got in to western comics for some odd reason - but I thought this was pretty fun overall. Expected more from a script from Neveldine and Taylor, and Malkovich phones in what is probably the dullest performance of his career...but as far as B-grade Hollywood action flicks go, I've seen a lot worse. |

The Rules of the Game (1939). This hinted at being a mess of a painfully convoluted movie, with many characters and underlying back stories and such, but instead it turned into an orchestra of perfectly portrayed chaos of bourgeois tomfoolery. Seamlessly moving from the laughably absurd to grounded realism, the fluidity of this flick defies the complexity of direction. The acting was sublime, with characters whose actions were so mundanely believable that they almost seemed flat, and perfectly so. The direction was phenomenal, with long takes incorporating multiple scenes, all told with the feeling of voyeurism. The story was a portrayal of a decadent society, where the walls of well-instituted hierarchies are breached, bourgeois and proletariat mingle with inappropriate abandon, the last step before ruin. It is also a beautifully weaved story of infidelity, with an ending whose denouement was a requisite sacrifice for some sort of cosmic repentance. A movie that warrants multiple viewings, this was indeed a classic in every sense of the word. Merci beaucoup.

Hot Tub Time Machine: First off you really can't expect too terribly much from a movie that focuses around a hot tub that also happens to be a time machine. BUT... I've read that John Cusack pretty much wants to forget the very existence of movies he did early on like Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer. Well, I would actually say they're better than HTTM. I guess I should have known what to expect as soon as the dog shit started flying early on in the movie. The humor in this is purely infantile. Way too many dick and cock jokes. I'm not saying that it's not a funny movie because it is, but I really expected something far better from Cusack.

The Lords Of Dogtown
I liked this a lot. Should've got round to watching it sooner. |
Just got I Spit On Your Grave from Netflix and realized I had seen this numerous times.
I don't know what I was thinking I was getting, but kinda bummed as I had seen it fairly recently. Still, it's a classic in my book, and I certainly wasn't going to send it back without watching it, lol. Glad I did actually. Good rain here today and a good movie. It turned out pretty cool. |
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th dimension
I really don't know what to make of this movie. 5.5/10 |
Whiteout
Welllllllll...I ll be kind and say it was decent. The twists were real eye-rollers, plus it seemed as if they could never quite decide if they wanted to make a masked killer-slasher film or an action film set in the Antarctic. Some beautiful camera shots of the coldest place on earth, and some good action sequences. Final say - if you decide to skip this, you won't be missing much. Elvis will drool at the one I saw immediately afterwards... http://cdn1.ioffer.com/img/item/298/...e_warriors.JPG Pretty nice colorful trash from the early 80s. |
Paths of Glory (1957). Probably Kubricks' first masterpiece, this flick expertly divulges the horrors of war, many of which occur away from the front. The cinematography was simply astounding, with beautifully composed scenes that elicit an explicit sense of realism. The charge into "no man's land" was splendid, taking away the exciting aspect of war, leaving only terror to accompany the troops. There are too many perfects scenes in this flick that warrant mention but will get no such support here, just go out and see this, again if that be the case. That said, the cockroach scene evoked one of the darkest one liners whose only response could be a nervous giggle. And just when the movie seemed over and could go no further, the last scene blesses the screen with a portrayal of symbolism that serves to move the hardest of hearts. That said, this was simply a picture perfect war drama helmed by a master.

I just watched "A Tale of 2 Sisters". SHEEEEsh. Can anyone tell me what this movie is about, or meant?
The cinematography and music were superb, but I still can't figure out what to make of the plot; if there was one it was very hazy. ~M~ |

Jennifer's Body (2009). A movie liked or hated, my vote goes to likin' it. tThose looking for an award winning experience from a teen scream flick should grow up. The opening was a well shot intro to the horrors that is to become Devil's Lake I mean Devil's Kettle. The story was worthy and darkly entertaining, with some funky teen dialog thrown in for good measure. The acting was strong, especially for a teen horror flick. The direction was solid, and the production values were strong. How the scenes unfolded, with competent use of parallelism and narration, was a definite boon. This one did not rely on effects, but neither did it shirk the camera away when things got gruesome. Then ending was handled nicely, not giving way to a simple Hollywood denouement, though cathartic nonetheless. Overall it was 100 minutes well spent. Merci beaucoup.

Tales from the crypt, one of my favorite Amicus horror films, awesome stuff, the Joan Collins story with the Santa was pure fun. The blind Ally story was very creepy.

The manic Santa was redone as an early episode for the series. It's a little goofier, but still good. |
Just watched Tooth and Nail tonight - it's available on instant play over at Netflix right now - it wasn't bad, the pace was good. I rated it about 3.5 out of 5.
House of the Devil - enjoyed this one too, liked the 1980s feel/look to it. House of Usher - the 2006 version, did not like this one at all. Too slow for my taste. |
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
excellent movie and love the two leads. and of course Hollywood is already on the verge of a remake...but at least David Fincher is at the helm....so it might be pretty good. |

9 (2009). The animation here is simply amazing, too bad the movie didn't follow suit. The characters are flat, the story is tired and predictable, the ending lame. It is like the creaters got stuck in deiciding, juvenile or adult flick, refused to decide and made neither. The result shows. Still worth a look to see the great visuals.
