The Stoning of Soraya M (2008). The title does not bode well for our eponymous heroine. This is far from the easiest of films to watch. The devolution of humanity into hatred born of lust is almost too much to bear, but bear it we must. The performances are sublime, with the woman folk presenting powerful portrayals of forced subservience. The men are just as believable, smug and smarmy, hiding their desires behind a veil of spirituality. The Islamic faith is is left outside of the realms of culpability, it is the men that use it to extract their own icky desires that is in contention. The camera work and direction are equally solid. This was simply a powerful and unflinching movie whose denouement is ineffable yet true. Ashe.

Hard Boiled (1992). Kaboom! should have been this flick's title since all things struck by flying projectiles tend toward dramatic explosion. At first view, this looks to be a lame action flick, but nothing could be further from the truth. What might be silly in another's hand Woo turns into an almost surreal art. Cops flying through the air shooting and hitting everyone, motorcycles exploding in the air as well, blood spraying hospital corridors as if thrown by a violent Picasso, piles of bodies innocent and not, this is pure art in action. Nonstop fun is punctuated by occasional dialog and story, but such things never threaten to slow down the action, with wonderfully shot shootouts that would challenge the choreography in a Michael Jackson video. In other words, this was highly entertaining with no other ostensible purpose. Merci beaucoup.

Daybreakers: Thought it was pretty good. Had a nice Sci-Fi feel to it and the story and set up was great, but it kinda fell short in the end. Not bad, but not as good as it could've or maybe should've been.

Valhalla Rising
A lot more surreal than I was expecting but this was still excellent. Well worth your time. No Retreat No Surrender All the sped up camera parts cracked me up. I liked this one more than when I first saw it in the 80s as a kid. |

Cabin Fever was good drunk laughs with friends. I keep thinking there's something mentally wrong with Eli Roth though.

Hot Tub Time Machine
I found this to be extremely entertaining and genuinely laugh out loud funny. The film benefited from the obvious comic chemistry shared by the actors playing the four main characters, who looked like they had a great time during filming.Great fun. 9/10 |
Been keen to watch Hot Tub Time Machine glad to hear its decent. Way to many comedies fall flat.

She's Out of my League Ticks all the right boxes you would expect from a Rom-Com,formulaic?Yes,but still enjoyable 6/10 |
Tormented
Poor script, poor acting and very formulaic. Id read some mixed reviews on this beforehand but it seems those giving the lower marks out of ten were accurate. A young overweight lad is bullied so much he commits suicide and comes back from the dead to get his revenge. The only convincing scenes were the flashbacks to the bullying and so called happy-slapping which really were quite hateful. I wouldnt waste your time unless you're really bored. |
Undead (2003). This is a low budget affair that extracts its excellence through blood, sweat, and tears- good things come from those that suffer. Begging, stealing, lying and contriving, and mooching all the way, the Spierig Brothers were not to be denied. The result is a wonderful horror comedy born of frustrated exhaustion. And it works wonderfully. The acting is fine for what it is worth, with some wickedly funny one-liners and profane ramblings. The story itself was surprisingly good. The direction and even camera work was competent, especially considering that some of the scenes had to get it right the first time (like wrecking the truck that served as a primary transport vehicle of cast, crew, and equipment). The effects were most surprising, many of which were generated on a laptop by the brother-directors after first having learned the computer programs from scratch. All in all this little gem made for a wonderful good time. Merci beaucoup.

The Crazies----I thought they did a pretty good job with this one. also a fan of Timothy Olyphant
Hot Tub Time Machine---not as funny as I thought it was gonna be...still a good watch though |
In theaters for a horror movie would be Halloween Resurrection and I think ever Saw 4 or 5. I had a ticket to go see Paranormal Activity, but unfortunately there were some family problems.

The Crazies (2010): Pretty good. Not as gory as I was expecting from the posters and trailer, but well worth watching. I liked that it was constant, brooding intensity from the get go.
Unthinkable: Quite good. Of course the subject matter might be a bit much for some people, but it was fairly well done overall. If you can, watch the extended version. It's ending makes for a far more hard-hitting movie. |
A few recent ones.
Dr Horribles sing along blog This was pretty funny, I'm glad it was only short though because it would have been very irritating had it been feature length. Comentary the musical sucked big time though, (that was a bonus on the dvd). 7/10 He died with a fellafel in his hand I have lived in a lot of share houses, probably around 70 so far, I generaly watch this in each one if I get the chance. It reminds me how you can always move on if the place you are living in turns to shit. So see it if you haven't, or read the book. Funny stuff. 9/10 Cassandra This is a bit of an Aussie Gialo from the late 80's, It starts of great with a really creepy scene, but then tails of a lot not keeping up the pace. Worth a watch, but don't expect to much. 5.5/10 Dead or Alive I thought this was good, not as great as I had heard, I was left feeling a bit lost at the end of it though, it left me rather empty. 6.5/10 Dead or Alive 2 I didn't really get into this at all, it drags for a long time then it seems to pick up but with no real story line. I lost interest in it pretty quick. But I have Dead or Alive Final still to watch which I am meant to return tonight, I don't really feel like watching it after seeing this one. Hopefully it will be better than the first 2. 4/10 |
Maniac Cop (1988)
http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/mov/video/i.../05/134105.jpg One of my very favorite 80's horror-action flicks, I saw it 3 or 4 times before but that's been like ages ago. I remember my brother brought a VHS copy of it home one day and told me "hey, I think this is a new film of that Evil Dead guy!"...[:D] >>: B+ |
Dead Snow (2009). This was a fine example of how to take movie homages from classic B-movie flicks and from them make a fun and top-notch horror flick. The story was simple enough, with all the regular suspects for a horror flick. But somehow the clichés add to how the story unfolds. Yes, our players do stupid things, but stupidity is just more fun in Norway. At times a rather mean movie, the comedy spans from cheap to very dark. The gore should keep the blood and gut fans entertained, in fact this one was entertaining in all regards. While not getting bogged down in a gratuitous ballet of special effects, it was by no means a low budget affair. Directed with competence, the timing was impeccable. And while cheap scare tactics are used to get this one rolling, they are more of a catalyst for greater things to come. A bloody good time indeed. Ein! Zwei! Die!

Predator ('87) - Great movie. "GET TO THA CHOPPA!"
|
Splice: Quite a good movie. Great casting and some very well done sfx.
I just really, really wish that filmmakers would understand that they don't need to have a cornball, cheesy scene 2/3 of the way through a movie just to make the end 1/3 seem that much more intense. Film/write it properly and you don't have to take the intensity down just to build it up again. Just go balls out and never let up. But I would still highly recommend Splice. |
Prom Night 2008
It wasnt completely awful, just a little pointless |
"Jonah Hex" (2010)
-Josh Brolin First let me say I'm a huge fan of "Jonah Hex" The comic book, I've followed the character since he first hit comic stands in the early '70's and when I first heard about this film I thought "great, I hope they do it right" Well now Ive seen it it all all I can say is...it's okay. Not the worst movie of all time, but given the source material it should have been great. Josh Brolin is perfect in the part, but the film makers were so intent on making a "Comic Book Movie"they forgot that Hex is first and foremost a western. All the sci-fi and supernatural aspects of the film were totally unnecessary, Had they stuck with a basic revenge story it would have been a much better movie. |
The Seventh Continent
This is Haneke's first feature film. It is bleak, it is arty, it does asks lot of questions. I think it is a great movie for discusiion, but not much I can tell you in a sentence. If you like his movies then after watching this, you realize it fits very nicely into the puzzle that is Michael Heneke. 8/10 |

Brother (1997). On the surface this is a sublime though done-on-the-cheap Russian crime drama. But Russian is far from superficial. On the deep this is about a culture suffering from an identity crisis, a crisis that was imbued with a Darwinian power struggled from the fall of communism. Fresh from martial dealings with the Chechnyans, this is about a Russia looking to branch out towards the West without losing its own identify. The effect is social bedlam. The acting was awesome, with competent direction and camera work. The story itself was solid, told in a fashion that was refreshing in that every nuance did not require a crayoned out explanation to the audience. This was simply a tale of a not so simple culture. Ashe.

Bosque de sombres (Backwoods)
Set in 70s Spain, two couples on holiday to Gary Oldmans family home discover a young deformed girl who has been severely mistreated in an abandoned house. A group of locals attempt to prevent them from taking her away to the authorities. Its a good film , some solid performances, especially by Gary Oldman and some genuinely tense moments. There is a but somewhere and I cant quite figure out where, maybe if you watch it you can tell me what it is that doesnt feel right which I cant put my finger on. That said, its still worth checking out. |
New Moon- sorry, watched it with a girl friend x Have to say I actually quite enjoyed it. The vamp is a wuss though. The Lycanthrope much more bestial x
Admit I may have to go watch,(or at least read) Eclipse. |
Dead or Alive final
This was my favorite in the series. It had a good story even though it wasn't terribley original. It just seemed to work better than the other ones. Still in was nothing that blew my mind though. 6.5/10 |
The Wild Bunch
Great film |
Dawn of the Dead 78 for the first time strangely. Loved it so much.
Now i'm making my eyes and brain take in a ton of Twin Peaks episodes. |
Hunt Angels
A great Australian movie about the fight for Australian cinema in the 1940s/50's, it focusses on film maker Rupert Kathner who battled and stole and cheated to try and tell the storys of this country in film. I think it is a must see for any film maker. 8.5/10 It's Alive It didn't freak me out as much as it did when I watched it when I was a kid, but still a good horror flick. I rented the box set with all three movies. I haven't seen the sequals before so I am looking forward to watching them. 7/10 |
