Suspiria. The use of color in the film is amazing. And I hear a remake is in the works?

The Breakfast Club
Feel reeeeaaaal old watching that film |

I enjoyed it despite all the fucking DICKS in the theater (first time in ages I've struck annoying people in awhile) but wasn't totally blown away. I didn't mind old Leo for a change and I might have to bite the bullet and watch the other Scorcese flicks I've been avoiding because he was in them. |
Brooklyn's Finest
I went to a screening of this on Wednesday (where I got to meet Magic Johnson, which I found way cooler than meeting Ethan Hawke, Don Cheadle and Wesley Snipes.) I've been thinking about it ever since. For transperancy's sake I'll let you know I am friends with the director and several of the producers on the film, but I'm fairly certain the following review isn't tainted by my relationships. A lot of people will say it's some sort of follow-up to TRAINING DAY. Andd although it doesn't share TD's excellent narrative thrust, BF is a far more dense and complex film in which three cops face three separate crises during one week on the job. While there are a few really bad cliche beats in the early part of the film, it hits its stride once Wesley Snipes enters the picture. His relationship with Don Cheadle's character is nuanced, pitch-perfect and the heart of the film. I'd love to see a stand alone film on this storyline alone. Ethan Hawke gives his best performance yet and the Richard Gere storyline is really cool. I would like to cut a couple of lame scenes, but it's a solid, claustrophobic cop drama with some jarring violence. The location shooting gave the film a Freidkin-esque sense of authenticity that makes every scene throb with tension. Heavy handed? Yes. Cliched? A little. Entertaining? Hell yes. This film feels like it could have been made in 1972 by Don Seigel. Good times. 7.5/10 |

Old Dogs
Honestly it was actually pretty funny for the genre of "family" type comedy it seems to sit in. Though Seth Green I found completely unfunny in this particular role. It kept me entertained throughout, but I have to say I thought it kind of fizzled at about the 2/3 mark...and went from "funny" to "ok" at this point. Better than I was expecting overall though. |
The Box (2009)
Watched this last night and really enjoyed it at the time...but now that I look back I can see the flaws starting to pop out. Still, as long as you don't spend too much time trying to make sense of the ending, this is a super entertaining, vaguely surreal piece of cinema. Wants to seem smarter than it is, but still very enjoyable at face value. Alice in Wonderland (2010) Typical Burton. Your opinion of his work in general should be a perfect indication of whether or not you'll enjoy this: there's not a lot of new ground here, but if you're still fond of Burton's style you should still find a lot to enjoy here. Personally, I had fun with it. Nothing special, but some great imagery and fun characters. You get exactly what you pay for: a once great director going back to the same well that he's nearly dried up, and pulling up something that looks and smells a lot like his earlier work. Pretty colours, familiar story, great cast...many will call him out for laziness, but if you keep your expectations grounded this is a pretty solid little adventure. |

--------------------------------------- A Serious Man (2009) Finally got around to watching this. An incredibly bizarre, ominous parable that has its characters and audience asking "Why?" And none of whom are given an answer. Some of their best original work in some time. |

Still, the fact that we get an epic sword fight between a red-headed, bat-shit crazy Johnny Depp versus Crispin Glover sporting some fancy armor and a heart-shaped eye patch just makes everything worthwhile :p PS - Glad you liked Serious Man, really enjoyed that one myself. Absolutely loved the closing shot...amazing stuff. |

Now that's one intense film. |
King of New York (1990). Abel Ferarra did a wonderful job with this solid entry into the crime drama genre. Having Christopher Walken as your lead never hurts, though, and Walken does a fabulous job in his portrayal of ice cold evil that is simultaneously consumed with charity for the poor. With lots of great performances from soon to be greats such as Caruso and Snipes and Buscemi, it was Laurence Fishburne that take the cake as Walken's fiery and extirpative sidekick. The story was nothing new, but the way in which it was told came across with aplomb. Plus, there is nothing hotter than smokin' hot gangster chicks sprayin' the competition with machine guns. Fun stuff.
Layer Cake (2004). This turned out to be your fairly typical, in all of the right ways, British crime drama. Daniel Craig plays the lead, a portrayal that was at first almost too perfect, but then the more human side comes to fruition such that he becomes believably flawed like the rest of us. With lots of intrigue and deals gone bad, this is a simple story that is rather convoluted. Lacking dark humor, this one is almost better for it. Most impressive was the stylistic but never overbearing camera-work. Producer turned director Matthew Vaughn does a great job at the wheel of this fun crime drama. Mercie beaucoup. |
GAMER......Second in a string of "put your mind on hold" movies for me. not bad

Rise Of The Footsoldier
I heard mainly negative things about this one but I thought it was a entertaining watch. Nowhere near as good as the Pusher flicks but a still fairly decent crime drama. |
Sick in bed, no kids, so I watch some movies.
Lost in Austen: awesome, been digging the Jane Austen movies lately, makes me come to the conclusion I have to marry Darcy, yep, that's all there is to it. Conversations With Other Women: um, didn't get it. The clever camera tricks gave me a headache and didn't save the dismal plot at all...fucking your ex? How insane. Trancers: as good as the first time I saw it? no- but very good, very cheesy. Looking for something else to watch... |
Trancers rules! Well the ending is a bit lame but whatever.

Du rififi chez les Hommes hommes AKA Rififi (1955). Pretty much your average film noir, except that this is pretty much perfection. This movie takes your typical caper storyline and turns it into pure brilliance. Every scene is a perfectly crafted work of art. The caper itself is infamous in its portrayal and may be the best ever filmed. On a side note the director was blacklisted from Hollywood and had to go to France; this was the result. The acting was sublime, and the singing scene was itself beauty manifest on celluloid. The ending: marvelous. This is simply a crowning achievement for the film industry. Mercie beaucoup.

So romantic! I love the graveyard scene. They just don't do enough good zombie porn. |
The Echo
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...grl/ie2m9e.jpg What an absolute surprise gem! I had seen the movie cover a few times, but didn't actually get around to watching it until read about it in last months Rue Morgue magazine and they gave it a pretty good review. A remake of the Philippine Sigaw, I thought that it captured a genuinely creepy and a feeling of pure dread. I thought that this was honestly a good, scary movie. It's definitely atmospheric and the direction is incredible - Slow, elaborate, very Hitchcockian - It's clear that the Writer/Director didn't just want to roll out another remake; this move was done artfully. Great creepy little horror movie and definitely one of the best of 2008. I HIGHLY recommend it... And now I need to see the original. 4/5. |

Eagle V's Shark
A pretty funny kiwi flick with Jemaine Clement from flight of the choncords. Well worth watching if you like his work. 7/10 Office Killer This was a bit slow to start, but then it got a bit darker and held some charm.... 6.5/10 The Lost This was an odd flick, I don't know anything about the true story, but Marc Senter was pretty good in the lead. His character reminded me a lot of Cripin Glovers "Lane" from "Rivers Edge". I thought it was a bit soft for a serial killer flick but then the last 30 minutes where absolutley brutal. 7/10 |
Deep Red (1975). Dario Argento's trademark style is illustrated in full effect in this stupendous little flick. The visual are wonderful, but that playfully wandering camera and those extraordinary camera angles were magnificent. The set-pieces deserve more than a mention for the wonderful imagery that they portray. Even though this story is almost coherent and some of the actors can act, everything still gets ensconced in the incredible tapestry that is Argento. Mercie beaucoup.

The 'Burbs- Imperfect but still highley underrated black comedy. Could've been better and there was alot more scope to develop things, but there is still alot of quality humor and intelligance running through this film.
