In My Skin AKA Dans ma peau (2002). This movie is not for the faint of heart. Once again, the French show off their cinema prowess by exploring dangerous waters with full aplomb. Light in plot, this squeamish flick centers on a woman’s sudden fascination with her body, specifically with her skin and the meat that lies below. Somehow, this film is disturbingly portrayed with artistic flare, and at times feels shamefully sensual. That we are left to guess at the true origins of our heroine’s sudden deviation of social norms makes this even more disturbing. Is this an untoward consideration of human dualism; is this a longing for feeling in a mind numbing world; is this a social commentary on the feminine situation and her difficult position in the brave new world; or is Esther just going nuts? The acting was superb, and the direction was wonderful. The gore itself was artfully portrayed, leaving much to the imagination. For those that can stomach this wonderfully dark flick, be prepared to discover more questions than answers in the contemplation of Esther’s situation. Ashe.

And what did you think of perversion story and wasting away?

Cthulhu - Very interesting movie. Guy comes back to the hometown where he was a misfit to deal with family issues, as seen through a Lovecraftian lens. The thing I wasn't expecting is that it was made by a company that makes movies for the gay market and the main character of this movie (and apparently all of their movies) was gay. Definitely an interesting twist on standard horror formulas. I don't know if it was a good movie, but it was definitely interesting.

Just watched In My Skin as well. I love the french films this one kinda reminded me of Trouble Every Day

Gamer.
While I found it confusing in some parts, I have to say it was a pretty decent piece of science fiction in my opinion.
Execution and acting might've been better, but overall I enjoyed it.
INteresting.

The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus
nothing spectacular, not bad either.

Invictus- about half way through i thought it was very sloppy and the sound poorly mixed (although that could have been the theaters fault). but the ending pulls it together enough to make you feel the film was worthwhile.

Killing Zoe (1993).From the opening credits rushing about the city of Paris, it is obvious that this flick might just be a good one. From the steamy hotel scene to the drug rampage, it soon becomes clear that this flick steps into the fringe and threatens to stay there. The cinematography was awesome. Whether it was depicting the splatter of violence or the hallucinations from a literal smorgasbord of drugs, the viewer almost gets to experience the scenes as if present. The acting was strong with Eric Stoltz strong as ever. Jean-Hughues Anglade killed his part in all the right ways, topping it off with the sublimely casual cigarette magic trick. The direction was strong as well. Overall. a great movie experience for those that appreciate drug infested psychotic rages. Ashe.

Not scary at all, but this mocumentary from Australia (start to end it's full with only interviews, Ghostly photos & few cell phone vdos) is a decent & new addition for After Dark Horrorfest 4. But I didn't get why there will be a US remake of it?? Does Australian English hard to follow for the Americans?!:D

Highly entertaining. Mark Strong was nice in the villain role but I think he can also be a good choice to play Holmes for a conventional adaptation.

IFC Canada is having Zombie week for anyone interested. Last night I watched NOTLD (1990) and 28 Weeks Later. I actually enjoyed Tony Todd as Ben.

Also last night I watched Suspiria on tv cause my dvd is loaned to a friend. The dubbed version is less than nice.

perversion story was ok,

wasting away was a different take of the zombie movie, shame the comedy wasn't better.

I'm glad that I haven't got any idea or info about this film (except the trailer) before watching it last night. I guess in this way you can really enjoy & like this film, otherwise the fun will be ruined. A pretty 'clever' & well done feature with some nice spooky elements.

Bad Taste (1987). Peter Jackson, who went on to direct the Lord of the Rings trilogy, splats onto the scene with this extremely low-budget debut of a sickening gore-fest. At first glance, the first thing that comes to mind is "you've got to be kidding." But then the charm of such an endeavor comes bursting through which such aplomb that it literally coats the viewer with dripping sense of awe. The acting is goofy and over the top, but hey, most of these guys were weekend actors who were only in it for the fun. Many of the props and devices were actually made by Peter himself in his parent's garage. The cinematography is the one thing that reeks of professionalism. With a thread of a story, minimal plot, and such a paucity of actors that many are killed more than once throughout, it is hard to believe that this flick could be so much fun. Believe it! Ashe.

Zodiac (2007)

Such a great, often looked-over film, and Fincher's best work in my opinion. It has an incredible restraint that I think his other movies lack. A grand, haunting epic combining obsession and culture. Some really great performances and some of the best digital photography yet, too.

It's partly biographical, partly fictionalized account of Charles Darwin & how he copes with the grief after untimely death of his eldest daughter, Annie, by plunging into his revolutionary work The Origin of Species. Quite sad & slow but a pretty well made & acted feature.

A 26 year old actress plays a 15 year old girl who pops acid at her first party - soon shes on uppers/downers/sidewaysers etc all the time recording her teenage whining in her diary...Bill Shatner with tash and glasses says he'll play her dad if he gets top billing despite less than 10m ins of screem time..Andy Griffith plays a priest and and Robert Carradine appears as a teenage acid head..

This is based on the real life diaries of an anonymous teenage girl who died of a drug overdose back in the 60's (by based I mean totally made up) and was at one stage required reading for every 12 year old...

Lucky Number Slevin (2006). This case of mistaken identity will keep the viewer guessing until the end. At one point i was all full of myself having figured something out, only to find that i was sucker punched by falling for the bait. The biggest complaint would be the beginning is a bit fast paced. Learn to keep up people! This is a witty, dark, at times cute, and ultimately stylish flick for the guy that can keep up. The cast was sublime, and everybody did their jobs perfectly. Lead Josh Hartnett killed his part, keeping everybody guessing 'till the end. The dialogue was fun and witty, the story was awesome, and the direction was great. The cinematography was at time playful and then frenetic, especially when increasing the body count. Don't worry for those that cannot keep up, the ending will literally be spelled out you. The only thing that was not up to par was the forced Hollywood ending. But we can live with that when everything else was so freaking grand. Ashe.

Okay, you think that was bad, I recently saw:

1969

Starring Robert Downey Jr. & Keifer Sutherland as two young hippies telling the whole story of the troubled 60s. Bruce Dern & Mariette Hartley as dad & mom, with Winona Ryder as little sis. From the same guy who brought you On Golden Pond. All was not golden this time. Rather sappy & superficial.
