Shrek 2 (2004)

I've seen this one a few times now, but honestly? I still find it pretty entertaining. Happened to catch it just starting on TV tonight and had no intention of watching more than a few minutes, but ended up sticking around for the whole thing.

Its a kids movie for sure, but it has enough references, in-jokes and bits of subtle humor hidden throughout that I can still get a good laugh out of it.

Up (2009)

Pixar have it down: creating tender, entertaining stories that can engage a wide audience. And of course backing it up with breathtaking visuals.
Wall-E and Up have been the best yet. Hope they can keep it up for at least a little while longer.

One of the best of the year.

I Sell the Dead (2009)

This one started out as a creative, creepy, and goofy Gothic horror tale. Was really digging it up until the third act, and then it just lost a lot of steam. I think also it was too short; didn't really build the story into what it could have been. Overall worth a watch, though.

Wow. Well, for what it is (torture), it's really good. That particular sub-genre is just not my bag, though.

However, if you DO like torture flicks, this might not be enough. Someone mentioned that they were expecting "more" from this flick... Well, for me, it was enough, but if you're really into torture flicks, then this doesn't really do much to enhance the genre.

Still, though, high marks from me. Recommended if this is what you're into.

4/5.

District 9----one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen in a long time. The political overtones were subtle enough not to make it too heavy.

Give Em Hell Malone---had potential but got bogged down in stupid plot.

That's usually what happens when you go into a movie determined not to like it ;)

Up in the Air (2009)

Loved this one. Just a great character study of a fascinating human being - well worth the great reviews that it's been getting. One of the few really human movies that I've seen in the last little while...this will also be high on my list of 2009's top films.

Never went into a movie determined not to like it. If I feel that strongly about it I just don't see it. I however went in expecting not to like this, my expectations were met.

I felt too that there was something missing...probably that "more" element. Other than that it was a decent watch.

Sexy Killer (2008)

http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/4865/sexykiller.jpg

Barbara is a medical student, a hopeless fashion victim and a relentless psycho-killer. When she mistakenly takes her fellow-student Tomas for a serial killer, it's love at first sight. Unfortunately, Tomas has invented a drug-fueled device able to project the last image imprinted on a dead man's retina. With dead bodies piling up on the campus, this may put Barbara in a very tight spot...

A pretty entertaining Slasher cum Zombie Comedy from Spain. Recommended.

Manchurian Candidate (1962). Great classic that was way ahead of its times. Angela Lansbury is incredible in her role, and Frank Sinatra is pretty wonderful as well. The rest of the cast effectively do their kobs. The story was pretty darned good, and while threatening to be almost goofy at times, it instead lends certain scenes an appropriately dreamy feel. Overall a great classsic. Ashe.

The Video Dead- One of my favourite zombie films. Watching this film is a huge nostalgia trip for me. First watched this film in the early ninties, rented from my local video store. At probably 11 or 12 years old I was young enough to ignore things like bad acting, continuity or production quality and able to just revel in the fact I was watching a film with zombies (pretty good special effects), chainsaws and copious amounts of blood. It's fair to say I am completley bias when judging this movie, but it doesn't change the fact that I love it. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but in an era dominated by formulaic slashers The Video Dead definatley qualifies as something different. Would love to see this film get a DvD release. If you hadn't worked out what its about by the title, its about a bunch of zombies coming out of an evil TV set to cause some trouble....

Just for a curiosity last night decided to give it a watch online and glad I did. A magnificent psychological horror film that comes with a bit creepy & surreal story of delusion, madness & supernatural. The strong cast consists of great actors like Alan Bates, Susannah York and John Hurt but Bates alone almost steal the show.

A pretty decent drama about mufti layer life story of Pippa Lee who tries to adjust into a new, simpler lifestyle and fears she may be approaching a quiet nervous breakdown, she flashes back to her troubled childhood and young adulthood that preceded her marriage to Herb (Alan Arkin), a wealthy publisher. On the lead role Robin Wright Penn gives a very convincing performance. The supporting cast assembled full of recognizable names such as Winona Ryder, Maria Bello and Keanu Reeves. Julianne Moore and Monica Bellucci appeared with small roles.

Mulberry Street (2006). Great little low budget horror flick. While the story was sorta corny, the way in which it was portrayed worked. The camerawork, whilst it would probably nauseate most, made for an edgy and claustrphobic feel. The direction and all of that other stuff was fine. Gotta love ther renagade nature of parts of this flick, like that some of the city shots being done on the fly with the city's permission. Overall a welcome entry to low budget horror. Ashe.

Hatchet.

Completely unimpressed. I chuckled a couple times, but mostly spent my time wondering when it might get better, then wondering when it might be over. Englund was a waste. Hodder's makeup was ridiculous to the point of being.. well.. ridiculous. I was hoping for a campy, gory bit of fun. I guess I got my hopes up from hearing that the movie was so amazing.

"Where the wild things are" 6-7/10

Been an indie movie couple of days for me.

500 Days (of Summer)
Great acting, excellent soundtrack, cute story. My emotions were up and down, as the plot was going back and forth between events which was really effective. I think I will buy this one, or at least the OST. so good.

Up In The Air
I haven't cried in a movie theater since I was sick at Saw 4. This was a good kind of crying though. The whole movie is a constant build up of every different emotion. The acting was amazing, especially Anna Kendrick, and Vera Ferminga. Just everything was amazing. The lomo photography style of the opening credits made me smile so much, the colours and costuming was excellent. So many good things that I don't really know how to explain because I'm not a film student. Also they made a reference to a favourite French film of mine. Just go see it.

Amelie
Oh hey look, it's that favourite French film referenced in Up In The Air. Not much to report that I haven't said about it a billion times.

Y Tu Mama Tambien
A little bit annoying to start off, but it get's better. guess it's just that I can't tolerate stoner assholes like the 2 main characters. Whatever, good movie I liked it. Gonna give it another watch when I'm not too tired for subtitles because now I have a headache.

In the past few days I've watched.

Orphan - I thought it was a good movie.Definitely worth a watch.

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage IMO one of the best of Argento's movies.I still haven't seen all his movies(I'm working on it...)

Mother of Tears I didn't like this one as much as Suspiria, or Inferno but it's nice to see the complete 'mother' trilogy

Kiss of the Dragon (2001). Pretty good Jet Li flick that sorta breaks the mold of the typical martial formula movie. All in all a good watch. Ashe.

The Transporter [ on blu-ray ].......fun movie and it really shines in HD

Jennifer's Body.......watched about 70 minutes of it and turned it off.....I just didn't care about anybody in it.
