Yep, the first one was loaded with plenty of black humor. The second one went into overload mode, which made it look much inferior. The black guy wasnt funny. People might have laughed out loud at his antics, I didn't. Some of the gags were real eye-rollers. The first one is one of my modern-day faves, this one left a lot to be desired.

You're meant to nitpick and analyze the plot and thematic devices used in the film about as much as you should for a porno. Oddly enough all the films in question involve an inordinate amount of flying semen...

(re-reading my own post) I dont think I mentioned any oscar worthy stuff?

And yes, I really don't "get" the Feast movies at all. Tsk tsk...poor me.

i understand perfectly that the sole point of these films were to lampoon the genre and push the envelope of bad taste as far as possible.

in the fisrt film it succeeded. it felt fresh and fun.
the second film felt like it was made by giggling school boys trying to offend their grandparents.

i get what they were doing - but an endless string of gross out set pieces designed to offend (and aimed at a demographic that have already seen it all) collapsed on itself, taking me out of the movie completely.

feast 2 was the iceage 2 of horror films.

more isnt always better.

My exact thoughts. Thanks, Urge.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. That movie was all kinds of funk so I need to watch it again.

Not bad for what it was, some pretty cool effects here and there. Performances were average, but yeah it was an ok watch.

Unleashed (2005). Expecting a slightly dramatic fight flick, instead i was treated to a great story with some occasionally great fight scenes. Jet Li, Bob Hoskins, and Morgan Freeman put forth some pretty strong performances, with Hoskins role as a mob thug made believably vile. The audio was awesome, with the fight sounds painfully believable. The cinematography was first rate as well. The story itself was good. Overall this was a pretty darned good flick. Ashe.

Beyond The Darkness

Gotta love those weirdo families dontcha. Enjoyed this one especially for the twisted shit but as far as the D'Amato stuff I've watched nothing's topped Absurd.

The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto

Some nice throwbacks to Ralph Bakshi's work but this was a little disappointing and could've been funnier. Still there's some great scenes here and there and I'll be checking out the sequels as i suspect they'll get better and more OTT.

Caught a screening of this at the Festival of Fear this summer...great stuff. I can see it rubbing a lot of people the wrong way, but I was really impressed. I'll 3rd the rec on this one for sure.

Based on what I've read about it in Rue Morgue, I'm REALLY concerned that it'll rub me the wrong way.

That being said, it's getting good reviews and since you three have recommended it, I have to see it now. It's on Netflix Instant. Thanks for the rec, guys.

I think you'll be able to appreciate it. Might not be your favourite movie ever, but you'd definitely find something to like about it.

Yeah I expected a kinda unstylised approach to this - I thought (for some reason) it would be a realistic 'underground/bareknuckle' fight scenes - not a Bloodsport kung fu extravaganza (ie the swimming pool bit)...

Once I got over that I did enjoy the better than average story and acting..

The Box (2009)

http://l.yimg.com/eb/ymv/us/img/hv/p...mallposter.jpg

Based on a beautiful short story of Richard Matheson that already has been adapted for an episode of the Twilight Zone TV series and I think that's the best way to treat such a simple & effective supernatural tale. But when director like Richard Kelly go for a celluloid treatment then you can guess how it can be turns out. Somewhat the original Twilight Zone episode is played out within the first hour, followed by further events that turned it into a X-Files type of sci-fi mystery thriller. But in this case, it's quite slowly developed and not that much confusing weird piece as Kelly's earlier work like Donnie Darko was and in the same way it isn't that much interesting at all. Overall, it's not a bad or very average movie but surely not as good as I expected.

Dan Curtis directed piolt for an illfated TV series - very similar to Curtis' earlier produced/directed Kolchak films....Very similar themes - a writer investigates the supernatural, stories told in flash back back etc..

Despite poor make acting, scares and make up there is something charming about this show/film. Unfortunally, protagonist David Norliss is has no where near the lovabilty of the rogue reporter Carl Kolchak..

Pity the series was never picked up...

Did any one see the new Kolchak series made about 4 years ago? is it any good?

Black Orpheus- Didn't think this would be my sort of thing, but I really enjoyed it.

Pi: Faith in Chaos (1998). Though many would disagree, i loved this shoestring offering from Aronovsky. The acting was awesome, and the unobtrusive ethnic diversity was a welcome change. The direction and writing were fantastic, and while the editing might be a little MTVesque, it was done with high style in what would become an Aronovsky trademark. Though a little harsh, the black and white film here was incredible. The symbolism was pretty effective, but at times too abstruse for me. The story itself was of a genius' downward spiral (couldn't help myself) into madness as he uses mathematics to unlock the secret of the universe. With antagonists both without and within, this was definitely a clinching intellectual thriller. Ashe.

At the back of my mind I always wanted to check this out - I loved the few Bartel films I've seen and this sounded interesting...I was very so suprised by how amazing it was...

Bad girl Cheryl runs after thieving from friends to hideout in a weird old hotel run by her Aunt. The place is a freak show of strange characters - alkies, pervie Priests and porno photographers and Cherly fits right in..

Played way straighter than I expected from Bartel and avoids (most of the time) to rely on camp laughs. Great acting (from the main cast) and an amazing location make this an excellent dark off beat 'thriller'...

Don't know why, but I'd been avoiding this film. I deeply regret that now, brilliant flick. Matthew Broderick's best performance as an insanely likeable character.

Harry Brown (2009)

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/9185/harrybrownr.jpg

Michale Caine is Harry Brown, the lone pensioner who becomes a vigilante & determined to avenge the brutal murder of his old mate at the hands of a bunch of local scum who terrorize the neighborhood. A fine addition to the old tough guys fighting back movies like Death Wish or recent Gran Torino with a dark & bleak tone overall.

Vertige: High Lane (2009)

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9...gehighlane.jpg

A group of friends on vacation decide to venture onto a trail high up in the mountains that has been closed for repairs. The climb proves more perilous than planned, especially as they soon realize that they are not alone. The adventure turns into a nightmare.

A French thriller. Though nothing new but well made & enjoyable.

Fighter (2007). More of a drama than a martial arts flick, i thought that it was well done in all aspects. The common complaint is that it was made in the shadow of other movies and really nothing new to offer. Whatever. i found the confilcts of the main character to be painfully believable and difficult; caught between two worlds with the potential of fitting into neither, the heroine does her best to juggle her personal desires with her cultural obligations, with the result disasterous nonetheless. Tending towards Hollywood expectations at times, the story tended to veer away from most movie cliches at the last minute. i thought the story was rather solid. The acting was competant, the direction good, and the score a little goofy but hard to comment upon as this is a Danish flick. The running scenes were particularly powerful depiction of our fighters struggles with contradiction and conflict, and i thought the daydream sequences to be revealing as to what was actually troubling our heroine. Either way, what threatened to be a typical teen coming of age flick turned out to be much more, at least IMHO. Ashe.
