Strangeland (1998). i figured that this was either a hidden gem or something best left uncovered. Turned out to be the latter. This flick, which actually had some promise, sorta fell flat. Dee Snider's performance was actually decent, and Robert England's was up to par, but the cop and especially his partner's performances were poor at best. The story itself started out OK but wore thin at the midway point. The ending, which could have potentially resurrected this dying flick, fell flat. There were some sick scenes, but not enough to carry any movie, especially this one. Overall it was a disappointment. Ashe.

Little Shop of Horrors (Rick Moranis one)... So much fun to watch on a big outdoor screen with all my friends who performed in the play with me in highschool. we got to sing along and reminisce.
Then Rocky Horror Picture Show. Costume contest was before the live gig, and of course the man in lingerie won. I've never been to a live show with participation packs before but it was so much fun. Glad I had that newspaper for over my head when it rained cause we were sitting in the front and had everyone spraying us with water. |

Evil Dead (1992). Absolute brilliance!
The Deer Hunter (1978). Again. This may be one of the shortest three hour movie dramas ever. Somehow, the long bits of drama are complemented by the sudden transitions into tension. This is just a masterpiece of cinema. Ashe. derek |

"Drag Me To Hell"
First let me say I love Sam Rami's movies. From "The Evil Dead" to "The Quick And The Dead" to "Spider-Man. now having said that, I have to say that "Drag Me To Hell" was not his best work. It started out okay, creepy and gory, but by the middle of the film it started to get a little on the silly side and by the end it was just lousy, and I 100% hated the ending. Not the worst movie ever made, but a disappointment. |
Dark Country (2009)
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1570/darkcountry.jpg Tried to unfold this old fashioned mystery thriller kinda Lynchian way. Not bad but predictable. The graphic novel like cinematography worked nice at the desert night though. >>: C+ Tormented (2009) http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/1882/tormented.jpg A British slasher about a bullied teenager comes back from the dead to take revenge on his classmates. >>: C Paranormal Activity (2007/2009) I guess I saw the earlier version which regard as the one with "Original Ending". Not bad but surely too much over hyped. A decent watchable POV Horror feature...that's all. Better than Blair Witch but nothing compare to REC. or Cloverfield. There's only one or two spooky scenes..specially dragging the girl from the bed was a nice effort indeed. Liked that shot.:D >>: B The Blair Witch Project (1999) Brave effort but it was really hard to tolerate this time! >>: C- The Changeling (1980) http://shopping.yahoo.com/video/imag.../83/165983.jpg Saw it for the first time. Very rich in every area, a solid classic from early 80's. >>: A |

Wrong Turn (2003). Pretty good overall backwoods horror flick. i only saw the R version so i may need to track down an UR disc. There were some pretty graphic scenes, a couple of which stand out nicely. Acting was decent enough, with visual pulchritude making up for any deficiencies. Some of the cinematography really helped to keep up the dread hopelessness in this decent enough little horror flick.
Spoorloos (1988). Absolutely wonderful. While not as outright scary as i thought it might be, this flick's power lies in the prosaic calculation of evil. A slow burner for sure, the intensity of the protagonist and the mundane deliberations and epiphanies of the antagonist make for a nice prelude of what is to come. The acting is superb, the direction flawless, then ending: perfect. The ostensible symbolism turns out to be apropos as well. Don't forget that today and tomorrow are the Dias de los Muertos and ya'll should probably say a little hello to you ancestors... derek |
Friday:
Return to Horror High- Hilariously bad highschool slasher movie (read lots of boobs and blood) with George Clooney for the first 5 or so minutes but they advertise as if it's Clooney's big starring role. Slither- I'm Bill Pardy. Best extra ever. Youtube it. I would link it but youtube is down for maintenance right now. Nightmare Before Christmas- We needed background noise during horror movie pictionary, but it ended in many sing alongs. Evil Dead 2- Yep, it's still as good as when I watched it a week ago. Saturday: Eraserhead- I'm still processing this. We watched it a little too early in the night so it was interrupted by many trick or treaters. I left to give out candy, and I heard Derek scream really loud. Ran back thinking he was hurt but he was scared by something in the movie. I enjoyed this a lot though, and we watched an interview with Lynch that was on the dvd. What a strange guy (not that I'm surprised) but he explained in great detail how beautiful the fresh intestines of a dead cat were and I kinda fell in love. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake)- We watched this while there were still some older trick or treaters coming around, and one guy came to the door white as a ghost. He was like "have you seen those guys next door?" We were out in the middle of no where in the country, but according to this guy the next door neighbours grandkids were scaring trick or treaters with a chainsaw. We had no clue because of the chainsaws on tv. Anyway, didn't much like this remake. Too many scenes that were specifically devised to include Jessica Beil getting wet, cold, dirty, sweaty and all wearing a white tank top. Oi. |

Rob Zombie's H2- 8/10
Even after watching it a second time, I can't get over the scene with *spoilers* Annie in the bathroom, and the scenes that follow. That scene made me realize that while Zombie doesn't always have his act together in film, he can really tug at the emotions of fear and despair when he tries. |

Day of the dead 2 : Contagium
So forgetting about the name it was a rather fun zombie movie.... 6.5/10 Dead Silence A pretty lame effort from the writer and director of Saw. The ending is as bad as it can get. 4/10 Black Sunday Great flick, it really sets the mood for Halloween. 8/10 Bad Dreams A bit like Nightmare on elm street 3, but not a bad 80's slasher with a decent soundtrack. 6.5/10 |
Phantasm 2 – Not a great movie, but good fun.

ended my Halloween weekend with "Young Frankenstein". Still a fun watch :D

Had a little marathon going at the party I went to last night:
Dead Alive (1992) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) Freaks (1932) Ernest Scared Stupid (1991) Spider Baby (1968) and today we watched Jurassic Park (1993) with Rifftrax, and it was hilarious and great. |

Moon (2009)
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/4233/moong.jpg I don't like to spoil it or give you a single clue...just saying: 'A must see for any true sci-fi lover!' Find in many reviews where they compared it with classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner or Solaris. I'd say ignore this stupid comparisons...watch it with an open mind asap..you'll find a simple but very original and thought provoking beautiful sci-fi feature where Sam Rockwell delivered a fantastic one-man show! >>: A- Stag Night (2009) http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/9117/stag.jpg Somewhat like Creep meets Wrong Turn. >>: C |
Well, I finally wanted to watch more of David Lynch's films. All I had seen before was the Elephant Man which I really loved. So I posted on my facebook, what movies to check out by him and, the majority said check out all of his films. I decided to watch Eraserhead. Holy shit. That was great. I've never been so creeped out. I like the way it was shot and how there was very little dialogue.
I felt really bad for the baby though. That scene made me tear up. I'm going to start watching the rest of his work now. I think the next on my list will be Lost Highway. |
Van Diemens Land
This is the story of 8 escaped convicts in Tasmania during the 1820's. I didn't know much about the story before watching it which is probably the best way to go into it. It's a brutal movie with a few scenes that make you squirm. Worth checking out but not the best film of it's type. 7/10 |

1000 Convicts... and a Woman! (the story of a nymphomaniac)
Hilarious BRITISH exploitation flick from 1971. Much tamer than it sounds. Still, worth checking out for a laugh. Newb- you'd like it. It's on demand currently- under "Drama." |
