Dante'sInferno 09-07-2009 11:30 PM

Martyrs

The movie was incredibly sad. It sucks that dumbass hollywood is going to ruin it though with their shitty remakes. Other then that, this movie is greatly acted by everyone. I can't find anymore words on how I feel about it though.

10/10.

Skammen aka Shame (1968)

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/2048/skammen.jpg

This is less symbolic than some of Bergman's works but an intense, psychological study of Jan and Eva (Max Von Sydow & Liv Ullmann), a married couple who has their personal problems like anyone else, but suddenly find their quiet life in a Swedish Island completely upset by a civil war. Faced with increasing losses and humiliations, they struggle not only against circumstances, but their own psyches. As their trusts to one another are tested...they are forced to choose between love and survival. And they betray their souls, their friends and even each other in a desperate attempt to simply survive another day.
The film portrays, in the bleakest and most uncompromising terms, that the worst that war has to offer is the wounds it inflicts on the human mind. Bergman pointed that a shameless war does more than endanger our lives: it robs us of our dignity as humans. He depicts a hypothetical war scenario with unnamed forces fighting one another. May be it is not about specific historical events, with specific names and dates, but about universal human reactions to adversity and chaos.

My second time watching this, and I was blown away yet again. Keeping aside the fact that Kurosawa is my all-time favorite director, here both him and Mifune tread into really unfamiliar territory of sophisticated values and bring out one of the best movies ever made. Mifune especially is nothing short of brilliance. A gem of a movie.

I am so glad I am not alone in loving this one, after seeing all the brickbats it has been getting around these parts. Nice sentiments, Dante. I really love Martyrs a lot too. One of my favorite modern ones.

Urban Legend was the last movie I watched

BH14 09-08-2009 02:56 PM

Last movie I saw was Inglourious Basterds and thought it was great from beginning to end. Everyone did a great job acting and the plot was suspenseful and solid. This movie lived up to the hype. However, Mike Myers was in this movie and I couldn't get Austin Powers out of my head when I saw him.

And the movie that I saw at the theatre before that was District 9 so that is 2 good movies at the theatre in a row which is pretty rare.

I'm Not Scared

An amazing Italian film about a young boy's discovery of another young boy being held captive in a hole in the ground.

Dramatic, suspenseful, profound, terrifying...

The Deadly Spawn

Finally got round to seeing this one. Enjoyed it a lot. Impressive piece of low budget film making.

That movie is an absolute blast I've yet to see a monster movie I enjoy as much as that one.

Ideally, I'd like to hear that this was better than ?Idiocracy?
How was it?

Watching the Host at the moment, have watched bits and peices so far.
Seems pretty good. Though I don't keep up with international affairs so I'm not really sure, nor do I give a shit how this film would've been a comment on their govt, I'm
just trying to enjoy it as a film with a monster.
It's not bad. Pretty funny in parts. Decent effects.
I'd like to see what they'd do with the second one.

I thought it was much better than Idiocracy, but not as good as Office Space. I thought it was great, though it didn't live up to it's full potential, still worth seeing. I quite enjoyed Affleck's character (as you can tell by my avatar). Some of the characters, specifically Step and a few other workers in the factory seem to be live versions of characters you might find on King of the Hill. Recommended.

"Dragon Wars"

Fun cheesy monster movie

"Mega-Shark vs Giant Octopus"

Quite posssibly the funniest movie ever made

Tokyo Zombie

Still not sure how I felt about this one, I'll probably have to watch it again. The special effects weren't that great and I didn't care for the CG, not only that but the story/characters/pacing/movie in general switched gears repeatedly and took a lot for me to stay interested. I like MMA, I like zombies, I like foreign horror flicks... I didn't hate this one but I'm just not sure how much I liked Tokyo Zombie.

A sequel to the remake though the first 10-15 minutes take place in a hospital.

Action sequences - Crank-ed up.
Story and characters - ineffective.

Worth a watch for the action alone. The rest is forgettable.

I can't wait to see this one, I love everything Mike Judge does, including Idiocracy

The Cottage.

An exemplary example of Urbanoia and over the top horror comedy. Exellent acting, direction, storyline combine to make a very entertaining picture.
Starts in a very subtle manner and gradually ramps up the violence and gore along with the humor. It's all perfectly paced so you never doubt what's going on, but are swept up with the story and action.
I laughed out loud many times.
The only flaws I found were the somewhat cheesey mask the big bad evil guy was wearing- it was pretty fake looking, and one instance of a musical cue that drew attention to itself. Minor complaints in an otherwise wonderfully done film.
Part of the After Dark Filmfest III.

Chrono- you'd love it.

Ironmaster

Loved it quite a cool spin on the genre in places. George Eastman cracked me up with the lion's head on his head that looks like he'd ripped apart a stuffed toy haha!

I'd love to find a poster of this one because the artwork is dope.

Glad you like it. There was a scene when the two boys lying down in the filed and playing with the toys...it was like they put little toys (cars) on the sky and playing them with the clouds..that shot just blew me away! Excellent cinematography! A very beautiful film indeed.

Seen it and you're right; definitely did love it. I believe it's the same people (or at least the same production company) who did Severance, which I also loved - Have you seen that one? It's a favorite of mine.

Blade Trinity

I enjoyed this mostly on a hot people running around in skimpy clothes and kicking ass kind of level (Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds - droooooooooooooool). Definitely some fun action scenes and I really liked how they brought in human harvesting (which was omitted from the first film) as well as Dracula. I generally enjoy Parker Posey, but her makeup and lisp bothered me and distracted me from her being our big villain... But that's OK... Long scenes with Ryan Reynolds topless made up for it.

Fun action movie with little else going for it.

2.75/5.

The Gift

A well-constructed character piece with some genuinely sympathetic characters and solid acting (though I have a hard time with Keanu portraying the threat that he does in the film). Kate Blanchett was beautiful and spot-on and she had a decent supporting cast. I'm not generally into "mystery/thrillers," but the characters were compelling enough that I enjoyed this film. The end/reveal was all too obvious, though, which was a massive disappointment. Regardless, it was great to see another Raimi film that's not the Evil Dead (I haven't seen a whole lot of them; I'm trying to make up for lost time now); he definitely knows how to create a successful creepy mood.

Not a great movie, but good.

3/5.

Went yesterday (Final Destination 4)

It really sucked. It was just boring, and they didn't even go into detail about ANYTHING. It was like the actors just gave up on trying to live the second they found out about the premonition thing. The only thing that made it worth watching was the movie theater/mall climax, and the escalator scene. >=)

I've only seen previews and the escalator scene looked completely fucking stupid. Was it as completely fucking stupid as the trailer made it out to look?

It was my favorite death in the movie, but not exactly plausible. (But then again, it is Final Destination)
