The Warriors

Took my son to the New Beverly Cinema for the first time. Completely packed theater full of rabid fans (some dressed as Baseball Furies) with James Remar, Deborah Van Valkenberg & David Harris doing a Q&A and telling hilarious stories about Walter Hill and filming at night in late 70s NYC.

Fantstic night!

Its low budget but the actors give it there all. Very misleading title and cover art though.

"Screamers - the hunting" 6-7/10

Uninteresting story as well as characters/actors.

When there was action it was quite good tho. But as soon as the action stopped my attention immedeately left the screen.

A typical sequal, i guess.

Isn't that swedish?

Why would you do that?

Elvis_Christ 07-20-2009 04:34 PM

Dolemite

Had some awful acting and some of the most poorly executed fight scenes I've ever seen.... had a blast with it!

 man I would've loved to have checked that out. James Remar is a great actor that never really got his due. I've got a copy of Quiet Cool to check out sometime this week.

Dragonwyck (1946)

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/7110/dragonwyck1.jpg

"I believe in myself, and I am answerable to myself. I will not live according to printed mottos like the directions on a medicine bottle." ...Nicholas Van Ryn (Vincent Price)

A lushly Gothic melodrama abound with themes of social class where Price totally inhabits the persona of Nicholas Van Ryn, symbolizing his proud, valiant strength, and ultimately portraying his breakdown into weakness, drug addiction, and murder. Dragonwyck is definitely worth a look for fans of Vincent Price. It's like Price's somewhat of a warm-up performance for becoming the master of macabre in his later glorious career. Price made a beautiful classy movie-pair with Gene Tierney. Both are great with their roles, but it is Price who shines the most. This well-produced, pure Gothic atmospheric piece from Mankiewicz also features a strong supporting casts including Miranda's bible-thumping father played by Walter Huston, her mother (Anne Revere) and last but not the least Glenn Langan played the role of Dr. Jeff Turner.

Thanks a lot to the HDC's Vampenguin for the recommendation. :)

Glad you liked it Rosh! :)

Now if I can just convince the rest of the crew around here to check it out, we'll be all set, heh.

- no mans land - rise of the reeker - much better than expected

- notorious - held my interest (the girl that played lil kim was smoking hot)

- tell no one .. french 'thriller' started well ... then dragged its ass for most of the rest of the film. very cliched .. the french are losing their touch - trading sublety for boredom, obvious twists for origionality.

Red Sands ~ it wasn't just awful, but it was so damn boring most of the time.

Equilibrium

I really, really enjoyed it. I don't see why it gets so much negativity thrown it's way.

Disease 07-21-2009 01:46 PM

Splinter

A pretty pointless flick with characters who don't have any charisma.... The monster was one of the stupidest I have ever seen. Not that you even really get to see it.

Due to the fact that I've heard breaking my Fanny and Alexander cherry with the theatrical version would be a big no-no, I have yet to sit down and watch its director's cut. Is this your first time watching it?

Haha, that's sound advice. Bergman had to, as he said, "cut into the nerves and lifeblood of the film," thus removing a lot of the tenderness and fantasy not only present but propulsive throughout the series.

Watching the entire thing is a wonder. It's so enchanting that it could no doubt easily be watched in one sitting, all 5+ hours, if you have the time.

This is my second time watching the series, and I'm enjoying it even more this time around. Regarding the theatrical cut, I say if you can watch the series, don't even bother with it.

Otoshiana (Pitfall) (1962)

A completely unique and deceptively complex work about many, many things that shifts between many, many different styles and moods and (even) genres, all the time feeling completely natural and never forced.

A damn impressive debut film from Hiroshi Teshigahara.

Highly recommended to Alky, V, Neverending, Return, Papillon, and anyone that might enjoy a politically charged, eerie, and unusual ghost story about fate and the future.

Disease 07-22-2009 02:28 AM

The Unborn

I'm not a big fan of ghost movies anyway, but this was trash, the lead actress was just absolutley terrible... If kids freak you out though you might like it.

Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007)

Ugh...not much to like about this one, at all. It hung on to some of the atmosphere of the first one which was a plus, but otherwise pretty sad. Full of gaping plot holes and huge lapses in logic, piss-poor dialogue, clichés galore and Jeffery Combs at his absolute worst.

I really wanted to like this - both the original and the remake are among my all time favourite horror flicks - but it really is as bad as it looks. Avoid.

(All that aside - the main girl is hot. Just wanted to get that out there.)

Posher778 07-22-2009 12:24 PM

My Bloody Valentine (Remake)

It was watchable. Decent acting. Clearly this was just intended to be for fun, and not to be good, so it worked. Decent attempt at the "who'se the killer" twist, but execution ended up failing. I expected great kills, but they were really generic... Pick axe to the eye, pick axe to the ear, pick axe to the face, pick axe to the nose, pick axe to the other eye, etc. One scene that stood out to me as more than decent was the chase scene in the grocery store. All in all, decent.

The Hangover

It was humerous in parts, but rather predictable in parts as well. I was expecting it to be a bit more in your face as well. But it was just middle of the road. Mike Tyson let it down a lot as well, it just made it feel cheap, name dropping like that.

Black Santa's Revenge

Wasn't as bad as people led me to believe. Pretty fun short flick anyways that was pretty slick for an indie production.

It's nothing more than a sunday afternoon flick, I recomend it for that, it's just that it needed a few piss yourself moments that it didn't have.

Walk Hard is a good one, if you haven't seen that you should check it out...

Double Indemnity (1944)

The ultimate film-noir thriller.

Not only does it feature some of the best written dialogue I've ever heard (delivered by an astounding cast), it tells a twisted story of love and murder and keeps the viewer guessing right to the bitter end.

The beauty of the story isn't so much in the plot itself - though there are certainly a few shockers, most events aren't really that surprising. But being told from the eyes of Walter Neff added an extra dimension to things, and made the entire proceedings that much more powerful.

An all-time classic with one of the best scripts ever written...and a new found favourite of mine.

The original or the new one?

The original must be one of the most overtly Christian/Right wing propaganda flicks to come out of Hollywood. Haven't watched the Tom Cruise one does it do the same thing but with Scientology/Bush era paranoia?

ADropOfFuelForANightmare 07-24-2009 06:36 AM

My last seen film was "The Mist" (the King adaptation) which I thought was good, I liked most of the characters and found them believeable and flawed although I excpected more to happen, I didn't think so much of it would be in the supermarket place

I'd definetly watch it again

It was ok, nothing compared to the original though, that damn kid would NOT SHUT UP. I guess some people could consider the original to be Christian/Right Wing propaganda but I'll take an entertaining movie pushing a cause over a documentary wrought with misinformation pushing a political agenda any day (both sides have them, don't assume you know what movie I'm talking about).

nah - the new one is played straight and is actually extremely effective in parts.

i agree about the 'origional' what a miserable movie.

and i agree with Des.. dakota fanning nearly drove me nuts in the remake... i would have fed her to the aliens.

I still say Peter Jackson should do a PROPER version of this film.

Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)

Doesn't get much funnier than Python humor, and this is some of their best work.

Even though this one isn't quite on par with Holy Grail in terms of hilarity, it delivers a biting, vicious satire of Christianity and some truly brilliant sequences - Pontius Pilate's "Biggus Dickus" tirade, the Judean People's Front (or was it the People's Front of Judea?), a lesson in Latin delivered by a Centurion, and - of course - a classic chorus of crucified convicts singing about the "Bright Side of Life".

Classic Monty Python - the perfect comedic mixture of nonsense, surrealism, satire and though-provoking humor.

The_Return 07-24-2009 09:17 AM

Knowing (2009)

Probably the smartest Hollywood movie that I've seen in ages - a very pleasant surprise. Don't pass on this one just because the trailers make it look like mass-produced, lowest common denominator mindless sci-fi: it's nothing of the sort.

It has some flaws to be sure - mostly, I found the CGI a bit poor - but the script more than makes up for it. Personally I put no stock in fate or destiny whatsoever, and therefore I found things a bit unbelievable at first...but once you get in the right mindset, everything makes perfect sense and comes together seamlessly. Cage even does a good job here, which is something we sadly haven't been able to say for awhile.

Thank you very much for suggesting this one _V_ - I probably wouldn't have bothered if not for the praise it's been getting here on HDC. I'll gladly second the recommendation.

_____V_____ 07-24-2009 10:16 AM

Thanks for watching it, buddy. And for liking it! :)
Especially after watching such a brilliant satire like Life of Brian, Knowing had some really mighty steps to follow (in your viewing court)...and I m glad it passed through nicely.

I've always undoubtedly preferred Life of Brian. It's such an enormous slap in the face. Definately one of my very favorite comedies.
