Hour of the Wolf (1968)

A creepy little tale served cold and quick. I felt detached from the film in a way I usually don't with Bergman, and though the story was interesting and exciting it failed to engage me at a psychological level. There is some jaw-dropping imagery here; the final incident (or hallucination, depending) is shocking and very well crafted, and there is a scene involving a ravenous young child which is one of the most chilling I have seen Bergman execute. Precise acting rounds things out nicely; Ullman- pregnant with the director's child- and von Sydow are tense and believable, and though they are not particularly warm or relatable they remain human. Supposably this is one of three films based autobiographically on Bergman's self-image, and if so it is a frightening reflection.

Up (2009)

Once in awhile, in the movies and in life, we all need to be reminded of the spirit of adventure. Pixar's latest gem is a gleeful refresher course in what it is to live life to the fullest, no matter what. The animation studio has reached a new maturity level: blood and mourning are not things commonly associated with a family film, especially when they both come within the first fifteen minutes. What's so wonderful about Pixar, however, is that any concern about what is and isn't expected in a film would not only be insulting, it would be downright silly. Though they're created digitally, these creatures are more fully fleshed-out than most dramatic live-action characters, and watching them is extraordinary; their eyes water if they stare too long, they have nervous ticks, they swallow, blink, yawn, gasp and giggle not at traditional animation moments but when human instinct tells them to. My only beef with the film was a plot-point involving talking dogs, a gag which felt lazy and absorbed a little too much screen time. This is a minor quibble; it's hard to find entertainment this nutritious these days, especially when it's this fun and heartfelt.

The final 10-odd minutes hit you so hard you are left gasping for breath. Awesome film.

Going to see Transformers 2 in a bit.

Hilarious as always...

Edmond. Sorta disjointed spiral of a flick that i knew would be disappointing, and in the final scene, when i could not wait to be fully frustrated by the inchoate philosophic message that this flick was insufficiently trying to expound upon, i not only found one meaning to this flick to suddenly emerge as perfectly ostensible, almost obtrusive, but i also found that the holes in the pock-marked philosophizing were absolutely brilliant as well. Still rules. Great film totally kills Tommy etc.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

Such a great little movie. The offbeat concept is executed perfectly, and Ryan Gosling gives a spectacular performance. I'd watch this again for sure.

Haha- agree with you there. Tommy was a bloated overdone mess with only a few minutes of brilliance. Phantom of the Paradice aims lower and succeeds admirably.

The Whole Wide World. Irritating story of Robert E. Howard's relationship with a local teacher. Vincent D' Onofrio and Renee Zellwegger. Dreadful.

STREET KINGS

Not bad...and surprise, surprise....Keanu is good in it.

siorai 06-29-2009 08:41 AM

Imprint.

Not really a movie obviously, but close enough. Utterly terrible acting throughout. It's almost like the entire budget went to effects and they were left with hiring actors with a payscale formed from candies stolen from restaurants. At least the story is good enough to make you somewhat excuse the acting. Somewhat.

Amores Perros (Loves A Bitch)
Cool Hand Luke
LA Confidential
Manhunter

not a bad one in the lot.

Elvis_Christ 06-29-2009 06:45 PM

Manhunter is awesome! I never got into LA Confidential but I've been meaning to re-watch it at some stage.

The Mothman 06-29-2009 06:56 PM

Yeah I'd say I enjoyed Manhunter more than Silence of the Lambs or Hannibal or Red Dragon, Tom Noonan was super freaky.
My uncle worked on this film, not sure what job he had, i should ask.

Almost forgot

The Brood: Cronenberg never lets me down.

I was enjoying it quite a bit...though the main chick in it (deb from dexter) was so over-the-top freaking out that I just found her annoying throughout most of the second half of the film...and again, the cookie cutter ending in 90%+ of horror films these days, I don't feel it needed at all.
Other than, pretty good - atmospheric and tense.

Are you talking about the Masters Of Horror version?

Disease 06-30-2009 11:03 AM

Cut and Run

I went and saw this on Sunday evening. Ruggero Deodato did a short introduction before hand. I don't think I had seen it before, anyway, it's a pretty involved trashy movie, Deodato was saying he thought the gore in this movie was more gratuidous than Cannibal Holocaust, People didn't seem to agree, but I did. What he was trying to get across was that Cannibal Holocaust could not have been made with out the gore, where as Cut and run could have been made with out the gore.

Over all, I nejoyed the movie and enjoyed his story during the Q&A afterwards.

7/10

Was Fanboys as good as I hope it was? Cause it looks awesome, and I've been waiting for it to come out for years.

Anywayyyy Silence of the Lambs has been on TV a lot lately so I've been watching it a lot. even after my third viewing in two days I was still entertained and on the edge of my seat. If one movie has ever done atmosphere and score correctly it's this one.

And I watched Misery. That bitch is crazy.

The Mothman 06-30-2009 08:40 PM

Moolaade was alright, very slow moving and simple film, liked the ending a good deal.
Roshomon was awesome, Its obvious that tons of flicks take influence from this, ex. The Usual Suspects

Oh yeah, Rashomon is definitely an invaluable film resource.
Have you seen any other of Kurosawa's work?
