Back on topic: last night I decided to check out some of the special features on the Criterion disc of Brand Upon the Brain! - some really cool stuff. 97 Percent True is an hour long series of interviews with people involoved with the film. It mostly focuses on Maddin, thankfully, and the man is just as facinating as you would assume from his work. He seems more down to earth than you'd expect for such a surreal, over the top filmmaker, but it was still really interesting to hear him talk about some of his influences and ideas. The other interviewees were interesting as well, but not on par with Maddin. Also watched the 2 short Maddin films on the disc: Footsteps and It's My Mother's Birthday Today. I've always been in awe of Foley artists, so Footsteps was obviously pretty amazing...It's My Mother's Birthday Today was pretty damn disturbing though. Beautiful in some ways, but still disturbing. I think I'll have to re-watch Brand... tonight. |

Across 110th Street
A kick-ass, violent crime drama/blaxploitation flick that delivers the goos in a major way. Yaphet Kotto, Anthony Quinn, Tony Fanciosca and the always entertaining Antonio Fargas all chew up the scenery and elevate this movie from typical to awesome. If you dig 70s crime drama you will absolutely love this film. None of the characters are one-dimensional, they all struggle with their own demons and no action is without consequnce. 8.5/10 |
A HK film called "Men suddenly in black".
Pretty funny. |
My Bloody Valentine (remake) ~ surprisingly, I enjoyed it, its not just great or anything, but its a lot of fun.
Cemetery Gates ~ I should have known better when I saw the words "From the Producers of BOO" across the top of the DVD case....:p Okay, so as much as I wanted to LOVE this movie since its about a genetically mutated Tasmanian devil.....which is just....awesome....;) I found it to be almost unwatchable. But the monster was hilarious and the gore scenes were really kind of funny as well. |
Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)
An eerie, low budget paranoia-fest with a catchy title that I have been waiting to see for quite a long time. Effectively creepy, even the broad daylight captured an unsettling & haunting tone in this underrated 70's Horror gem. >>: A The Last Horror Movie (2003) http://shopping.yahoo.com/video/imag.../39/241839.jpg A decent low budget treat for the fans of serial killer sub genre. Liked it, the guy on the lead did a good job with the role. >>: B- The Escapist (2009) http://l.yimg.com/eb/ymv/us/img/hv/p...mallposter.jpg Frank Perry (Brian Cox) is a long term prisoner in a London jail where the guards look the other way and one would be wise to avoid the attentions of Rizzo (Damian Lewis), the boss inmate and his unhinged junkie brother Tony (Steven Mackintosh). Perry receives the first letter from his family in fourteen years. His daughter is a heroin addict and close to death. Perry decides he must get out, to see her and make things right while there is still time. He goes to his closest friend Brodie (Liam Cunningham) and they enlist on-the-edge pugilist and thief Lenny Drake (Joseph Fiennes) to put together their plan. A slow burn but intense British prison break movie with good casts. Though it's not only delivers the 'prison break' suspenseful content, you'll find something more at the end. Recommended. >>: B+ |
Army of Darkness
Cronenberg's Crash Smokin' Aces then todayy scream Channel is having an Evil Dead Marathon so I watched: Evil Dead Evil Dead II Watching Army of Darkness again after ED2 is over. Then tonight I'm seeing Drag me to Hell and will post my thoughts later. I have had suggestions to just continue watching Sam Raimi movies when I get home, and I just might so that. I'm stoked. |
Satan's Little Helper - I could watch it a million times, it's amazing.
|
Quarantine - I was pretty impressed. I liked it quite a bit. From about halfway onwards it was damn intense. But I haven't seen [REC] yet, so I was taking it as face value.
L'Interieur (Inside) - Very well done. Somewhat spoilerish: I was almost surprised that there was no twist to the end. No supernatural nastiness with the baby. The shots inside the womb made me suspect that there was something more to the baby than normal. I'm rather glad there wasn't. Obviously not for the squeemish at all, but quite good. |

Brand Upon the Brain! My second viewing of this masterpiece...this time I watched it with the Crispin Glover narration track. He puts a whole different twist on things - I think I prefer the Rossellini track, but I'm very glad I tried something different this time around, and I look forward to listening to the other tracks in the future (Eli Wallach especially intrigues me). As far as the film itself - no one alive today can make a film like Guy Maddin. A genre (and gender) bending rumination of childhood, an ode to silent film, and a love letter to the surreal...a stunning film in every sense of the word. Fortunato has recommended this one endlessly around here...I'm infinitely glad I listened to him in the first place, and further I want to strongly second his recommendation in hopes that everyone who considers themselves a fan of the art of cinema take it upon themselves to watch this modern work of genius. |

Drag Me To Hell was amazing. It's exactly what you expect in a Sam Raimi movie. It had the over the top gore, cheesy b-movie one-liners and laughs, Evil Dead style makeup. The ending was great, and I like that it was a mix of Evil Dead and the moderness of Spiderman. Succch a good time, go see it.

Drag Me to Hell (2009) So, yes. This is a return to form for Raimi and Raimi. But more than that, it's a breath of fresh air for horror fans. Goofy, creepy, and purely entertaining. This is a film made by a man who still has a giddy, childlike love for horror burning within him. Allison Lohman is wonderful in her starring role, taking every beatdown, delivering Ash-esque one-liners with ease, and generally inspiring pity for her supernatural situation. There are angry shadows, unseen forces, dead bodies, jump scares, action thrills, etc. and lots of laughs. What's more, it's a kind of outrageous (yet totally appropriate) cautionary tale for these hard economic times. This is what we need more of. So horror fans unite! Go see it at the theatre. This is not one you're going to want to wait for the DVD to see. I was smiling all the way through. |

Seven (1995)
Such a great film. Great performances all around, and executed very well. -9/10 |
Sleeping Dogs (1977)
Good show - Sam Neill stars as a wannabe recluse thrust unwillingly into the political upheaval of late 70's New Zealand. Bristling with tension, fast paced and well acted...definately glad I watched this one. |
Class of 1984 (1982)
I loved this film. It was one of the funnest films I've seen in a long while, and it's probably my favourite entry into the vigilante genre. -9/10 |
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
3.5 / 5 Raimi's return to the horror genre is lots of fun and packs a few good scares in, but it's also conventional and light, like a ride in Disney's Haunted Mansion. I had a good time watching the film but it never really took me out of my comfort zone or affected me deeper than on a surface level the way a good horror movie should. If there's one thing Raimi is particularly good at it's mixing shlock humor with the grotesque, and there are a number of wonderfully executed scenes here where insects are vomited, eyes are gouged and goats go wild. Also impressive is his handling of a new breed of effects; once a master of low-budget, homemade effects, Raimi effortlessly handles CGI, a difficult tool to use effectively, especially in horror. Lohman is cute, Long is right for the part, and the ending is brilliant. It's not a genre revelation but it is a thrilling movie. |

one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time......pure entertainment from start to finish. |
Hot Saturday (1932)
A fairly entertaining story of love, youth and scandal. Nothing really special, but it's not bad - worth seeing for a very young Cary Grant, but otherwise not much stands out. |
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

Death Wish 3
I'd never actually seen any of the other Death Wish movies, but I caught this one starting on TV this afternoon and thought I'd give it a look. HUGELY entertaining. It's a B-movie for sure, but in the best possible way. Action packed, and Bronson is badass - I really should watch more of this stuff. |
Baby Blues (2008)
http://turnerclassic.moviesunlimited...ide/D20433.jpg A crippling case of postpartum depression leads a young mother to strike out against her four young children while their father is away from their farmhouse home working a 24-hour shift. Realizing his siblings' lives are in danger, 10-year-old Jimmy takes action in a desperate attempt to save the family from a horrifying fate! Bit disturbing to see a young mother recklessly killing her children brutally in this low budget 'slasher' with a shitty ending. >>: C The Devil's Tomb (2009) http://www.beyondhollywood.com/uploa...mb-movie-1.jpg An elite group of soldiers are sent on a covert mission to retrieve a missing scientist from an underground lab. Worst of the year so far! >>: F Quote:

Smash Palace (1981)
Enjoyed one of Donaldson's earlier flicks last night (Sleeping Dogs), so I decided to pop this one in this afternoon. Great movie. It's a slow burn, but a compelling and tense drama, that builds up to one hell of an ending. Bruno Lawrence steals the show as the father struggling in the aftermath of his wife and daughter leaving him; he delivers a nuanced and tortured performance and was really the highlight of the film. Not what I was expecting after Sleeping Dogs, but still a really well made thriller. Worth a look for sure. |

How does the rest of the series stack up? I'm keen to check out some more now. Back on topic, just watched: Hulk Vs. Thor (2009) Way better than the Wolverine half of this double feature. The action is better, it has somewhat of a developed plot, and I daresay the animation is even a little stronger. It's still nothing earth-shattering by any means (and only 45 minutes), but if you're into these characters you should take a look. |
S.F.W. (1994)
"So fucking what?" A lot can be said for going into a movie blind. I'd not heard one single thing about this movie for better or for worse, but I grabbed it awhile back in a bargain bin and now that I've watched it, I'm glad I did. This is a movie about apathy, about celebrity culture, about all the flaws of our society. It is an angry, angry movie lashing out at everything wrong with us today. It's a movie with a message, and even though I don't personally agree with everything it had to say, it made it's case pretty damn strong. By the way - I have a new found appreciation for Stephen Dorff after watching this. Great performance. |
