absolutely dreadful, yet somehow slightly entertaining.

I thought it would have been fairly good if they figured out what type of movie they were wanting to make. Slapstick, over-the-top humor or emotional drama? Pick one, but don't try to combine the two because it just does not work.

Der Untergang (Downfall)

Charting the final days of Hitler in his Berlin bunker, this film absolutely blew me away. Told primarily from the viewpoint of his personal secretay, Traudl Junge, it shows a human side of the inner circle of Nazi Germany as the Soviet army closes in on Berlin.
Bruno Ganz gives an immensely powerful performance as Hitler, displaying moments of almost insane delusions, still believing that a counter attack with troops that dont exist will break Soviet lines, to fatherly compassion to the women in his life and a sincere hope for their well being. The supporting cast is excellent playing Hitlers advisors and friends, including important nazis like Himmler & Goebbels, and the well paced story will have you gripped from the start.
This really is a must see.

That season was pretty mean. The 5th DVD set has been my favorite so far... I think? Is that the one where that dog keeps raping Karl? :D

Season 2 is the funniest IMO. Season 5 is actually the worst (in everyone who lives here's opinion) :( But yes, that's the one with the dog raping Carl (Hand Banana)

Yeh? I loved how crazy it was. Have you seen Friskydingo? Started watching it awhile back and thought it was great.

Yeah! It's kinda amusing too. Aqua Teen will forever be my favorite though. Had me and Alex crying laughing at 5 am.:D

Buy it! It's totally worth it.

cheebacheeba 05-12-2009 05:33 PM

I'd buy it if I knew what "set" meant...what is a "set", is that a season?
Here they come out in "sets"...don't wanna buy partial seasons.

You can buy all the seasons just about anywhere. They don't sell partial seasons of it.

cheebacheeba 05-12-2009 06:32 PM

So, "volume" (sorry, had that wrong) #1 is all of season 1?
Same deal?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I had no problems with this one. I was never a big comic book reader so I don't care so much about details like true "fans" do. Good summer action fare.

Awesome, absolutely awesome.

Chocolate. 8.5/10/ Great kung fu movie, nice concept. Autistic Savant's interest me, and this is just great. The girl in the movie is very good at acting out normal autistic mannerisms too.

Salt of the Earth

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_of_the_Earth

Startlingly bold and powerful propogandistic film from 1954 detailing the strike by Latino workers in a New Mexican mine in 1952. The film was directed by a blacklisted director and featured an almost all amateur cast made up of actual participants in the real strike.

Produced during the height of McCarthyism, the FBI tried many sneaky tactics to shut down the film and once it was completed union projectionists were forbidden to run the film. It was lost for a decade but has found an audience today because of its important role as an early Latino film, feminist film and pro-labor sympathies.

It's also a really GOOD film if you're not opposed to the heavy-handed politics. A powerful, moving experience, full of epic imagery.

The low budget aesthetic may not be for everyone but I thought this was a great flick and shows what can be done with a budget of fuck all.

Nuns on the Run (1990). Simply ghastly. The actor, Eric Idle (or Fish Eyes as I affectionately call him), reminds me very much of my late, great uncle Ferryweather. Uncle Ferryweather taught me everything I ever needed to know about life, such as smelling for storms, ventriloquism, cheese rolling. He was a dear old boy, with eyebrows that twitched like a couple of randy caterpillars. He died trying to wrap his legs around his neck during a particularly raucous gentlemen's evening (it was his party trick, see), and he ended up strangling himself. Now, he's lives in an out-house at the back of my manse. He's grey and dusty, and when I press his rubbery face he makes a little parping sound. I love him very much.

Eat Drink Man Woman

A beautiful story of amazing depth. I rarely see such subtlety and understanding of the human condition in a film.

Alice, Sweet Alice aka Communion (1976)

A decent Giallish thriller.

Watched Taxi Driver for the first time last night. Robert Di Nero was pretty freakin hot ;). I liked it. It was actually a bit unpredictable, I thought at least. I didn't expect him to kill all those pimps and live and go back to being a taxi driver.

Silence of the Lambs (1991)

The source material by Thomas Harris could have been adapted in different ways, as is evident by later, cheaper thrills like 'Red Dragon' and 'Hannibal', but Demme chose not to make a horror movie in favor of a human drama which just so happens to be a bit creepy. A wise decision indeed, especially as the film so knowingly toys with what we expect out of horror movies with far-less sinister monsters, or at least less real. But what is a monster? Is an intelligent murderer more sympathetic than a delirious one? It's hard to think otherwise as we simultaneously fall for the cunning charm of Dr. Lecter (played exquisitely by Hopkins, of course) and are repulsed by Buffalo Bill (Levine). At first glance this opposition may be inaccurately attributed solely to the two character roles and performances themselves; it is Demme's careful eye, however, which guides us. When Demme shoots scenes with Lecter, we become him as an audience; we are strange to Starling as she sits outside the cell and asks Lecter/us to help her, as is made clear by the terrified gaze she points directly into the camera. But we see her with a calm deliberancy as Lecter does, we calmly read her thoughts, and dissecting her becomes increasingly more interesting even though it is irrelevant to the story. But looking at Bill is a horrendous thing to do. He is defined by individual parts- a nipple piercing, a quivering nostril, genitals tucked between legs- and we see him as he sees the world and wants the world to see him: not as an organic whole but by detailed pieces, each organic and its own entity. I admire Demme's adaptation because he is quite a different visionary than Thomas Harris. The first time I saw the film I disliked it because of its lack of depth behind Bill as a person and detail behind the crime investigation, both of which were heavily covered in the novel; while I have found the first more symbolically oriented around Demme's camera, the second would simply not belong here. Like Kubrick's 'The Shining', this is a different piece of art than its source, and cold technical detail is less important than the witnessing of the warm flicker of an eyelash, a movement which says much more to Demme about human nature than any case file ever could.

Donnie Brasco

A brutal mob story with exquisite performances from Pacino & Depp.

The Mothman 05-15-2009 01:44 AM

Unforgiven.
instantly became my favorite Eastwood directed flick. ending kicked total and complete ass. some pretty deep character analyzing too.

Das Boot
That was a pretty damn good one with a good amount to say. Too bad i rented a copy with dubbing. bad dubbing.

Get Carter
liked this one a good lot too, I've been diggin these older crime flicks, ex. Bullit and The French connection.

Event Horizon
this was enjoyable as well, didnt find it to quite live up to the hype. the visuals and the concept were cool (even if it was the same as that of Sphere), the scares didnt really get through to me however.

The Day after
really creepy film that does a good job simulating the tension that would occur pre-nuclear war, the effects were pretty dated, but it remains an eerie and
unsettling film.

2 Fast 2 Furious
awful.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Pretty chilling take on a serial killer.

***Not really a spoiler, but still***

i liked the way some of the murders were shown, aftermather imagery with offsreen ruckus and screams of the actual murder. That worked for me. Ashe.

Wrong Turn

Fairly standard set up, its hills have eyes with 'mountain men' instead of mutants, but a better than average flick. Quality FX and well paced story with little excess fat on it.

Bad Taste

An old favourite, gloriously over the top gore fest with terrible acting that cant help but add to the enjoyment.

ferretchucker 05-15-2009 02:44 PM

Superhero Movie.

Better than some of the spoofs out there, but that isn't exactly an achievement. At least this one had a bit more of a consistent storyline.
