.... the film works like a fairy tale, and though the story is magical and charming when it comes together, it isn't relatable. For what it is, though, the film succeeds; it has a pulse, relaying its story with never a dull moment or an unnecessary one. Original, and certainly one of the year's best.

Definitely but as far my little lovely experience with Indian films (I'm not saying that SDM is an Indian film; just according to the premise of the story/film) I think in India there have already been a lot of great movies made (as more or less covered the same premise of street/Slum lives as well as corruption & underworld activities) but not 'somehow' critically acclaimed worldwide like the way SDM did. For example, Salaam Bombay (1988), Satya (1998), Company (2002) were also some fascinating movies that appealed to me in more broad way than SDM.

I like to hear from _V_ regarding this issue.

It was a beautiful story indeed, specially I mostly liked the childhood part of 2 brothers..specially when Jamal ran to get an autograph from Big B..that was awesome! :)

RocknRolla (2008)

Though it not might as good as Snatch or Lock, Stock but it's another typical Guy Ritchie film with lots of fun & 'Rock n' Roll';) !

There's B-Grade horror and then there's b-grade horror.

This film is about a woman who receives a creepy mask and then thinks she's haunted by the Nightmare man, a demon that comes to her in her dreams... And then it becomes her reality...

I honestly have no issue with monster/slasher films, but the production value of this film was so incredibly low that everyone in the theater couldn't help but give way to laughter. The demon's mask was absolutely pathetic, and attempts to catch the victim were just... poorly choreographed... The dialogue was stereotypically bad, but not so bad as to be self-conscious parody... Just an all around bad movie. As in, I want that hour and a half back. WOW.
1/5

..Fully agree with you, Chrono.

Monkey Shines. Better than I remember it- suspenseful sci fi thriller. Still, there's a moment toward the end that made me laugh....

DeVuL 01-13-2009 02:58 AM

Tremors, cuz Kevin Bacon kicks so much ass in that flick!!

@ Roderick - Heh, that's awesome. :D

Slumdog Millionaire - Great movie, if not a bit depressing (yes, the ending is very satisfying, but I really didn't feel "uplifted" by the rest of the film).

Choke - Good, but it could have been better, which is a shame because Sam Rockwell is enjoyable as always (love him). My main problem is that it many things unexplained, perhaps due to it's length (only 89 min). Very quirky and true to Palahniuk's style, which is recognizable even if you haven't read the book, like me. Overall though, I enjoyed it a lot mostly due to the actors who all do a great job.

Kill Bill Vol. I & II - Back-to-back, pretty much one flick in two parts. Still kicks serious ass, still dynamite.

"My name is bruce" 7/10

Too goofy to be great.

Sick_As_Fuck 01-13-2009 12:52 PM

The Bucket List, Doomsday, and Feast.

All enjoyable. Especially Feast. Fiending for the sequel now.

The Orphanage

It's movies like this that remind me why I fell in love with horror in the first place.

Absolutely stunning in every way: terrifying, heart-wrenching, and deeply moving. A movie hasn't brought me this close to tears in a very long time.

DeVuL 01-13-2009 05:30 PM

Last "horror" movie I watched.. lol... it was a lil flick called Undead or Alive... had Chris Kattan in it.. one of those, funny, ridiculous horror flicks.. it kept my attention and kept me amused for the most part, if you like those kind of flicks, I'd say check it out... I laughed at about 80% of it.. legitimately

Gran Torino 8/10

loved it....and much funnier than I expected. Change a couple of things around and this could have been "Dirty Harry: The Geriatric Years".

The_Return 01-13-2009 08:13 PM

Gran Torino

Very, very impressive.

Movies like this can be pretty hit-or-miss, but Clint nailed this one, on both sides of the camera. On screen, he created yet another iconic character that ranks right up there with The Man With No Name or Harry Callahan - and behind the scenes, he deftly told this man's story and shaped a world filled with laughter, fear, pain and - above all - redemption.

...I loved it.

alkytrio666 01-13-2009 09:04 PM

Se7en (1995)

I thoroughly enjoy Fincher's entire catalogue. I like all his stuff; hell, I like Panic Room, and even had a good time watching Alien 3. I love watching Fight Club as much as everyone else. I've enjoyed seeing his style change and mature, and I think Zodiac and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button are fantastic entries into a promising future.

But Se7en is his masterpiece.

Last watched= Home Movie. I'll have to watch it again, because I'm still on the fence. For now I'll just say not bad, not great.

roshiq 01-13-2009 11:00 PM

Gran Torino at least deserve some nominations in up coming Academy Award including Best Actor category. :)

It's really nice to know that you liked it that much. Some of my friends here who aren't a regular viewer or fond of horror films also had the same kinda opinion after they gave it a watch for my high recommendation. I think it was the best of the best (in horror genre) from 2008...even I liked it more than Let the right one in or [REC.].

Truely godawful film.Poor actting and a pitful story. And some decent gore scenes in it but other than that it was a pile of crap.

Last time I make a blind buy based on what bloody disgusting has to say.

The Last House in the Woods (2006)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...CL._SY120_.jpg

The story follows a terrified woman as she escapes her would-be rapists by taking refuge with a kindly couple in the woods. However their quiet, secluded house holds a dark and depraved secret far worse than she ever knew before.

A low budget Italian tribute to 70's and 80's top notch gorefest & slasher films...not a good movie but not bad either! I think it's the best or the most watchable film from Ghost House Underground collection which has been released last year. Most of the films of this bunch were awful or you can say hardly mediocre in a positive approach.

"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" meets "The Last House on the Left"... at some points of time in this movie it surely reminds that.

Give it a watch if you are having some dull time, you'll have some fun for sure with it.

Gran Torino

I more or less agree with Alky, Newb, and Return on this one. My only complaint was the at times laughable melodrama and almost absurd cheesiness that showed up here and there throughout the film. I'm not sure if, since this is supposed to be his exit film, it's supposed to be kind of retrospective to his earlier work. At any rate, I did enjoy it.

I'd probably give it a 7.5/10.

neverending 01-14-2009 02:05 AM

Already Dead.

Suspenseful revenge drama. Very well done, IMO.

Belle de Jour (1967)

4.5/5

Interestingly enough, one of Luis Buñuel's most straightforward narratives may also be one of his most psychologically complex. Often noted as one of the most daring and erotic films of the decade, it is also one of the most truthful. Buñuel uses the character of Severine to exploit his feelings of repressed sexuality in a world which frowns upon anything to do with the matter. Now is as important a time as ever to revisit the film; I believe it was meant as a time capsule, something that Buñuel hoped would become more accepted and relatable as time went on, and for this he is a genious. It is escapism of the deepest kind, a voyeuristic adventure which seems strangely comfortable in all the right places.

hellfire1 01-14-2009 12:09 PM

Glengarry Glen Ross - One of the greatest casts ever, if not the greatest. Started watching this for Baldwin's famous (infamous??) speech, and was blown away. Bf and I are still talking about it.

Ah! Wonderful, wonderful film. So strange and boldly sexual. It flows more like a symphony than anything else. More incredible soul-searching from Bergman, for sure.

Grindhouse (2007)

It was on Starz, I think. Annoying that they broadcast it in full screen, but at least they showed the whole thing from start to finish.

Still great, though.

I pugni in tasca (Fists in the Pocket) (1965)

A fundamentally disturbed young man decides to off his dysfunctional family so his older brother (the breadwinner, and the only "normal" one of the bunch) can be free of them, as a responsibility. This stunning debut from Italian director Marco Bellocchio is collected, yet angry filmmaking, a brutal condemnation of traditional Catholic family values.
