Doomsday again. still fun.
The Orphanage - not bad, not great, some creepy scenes.
the Godfather Part II - fabulous, was glued to the screen every minute, loved it every bit as much as the first if not more.

The Jacket. Good movie but I need to rewatch it because I wasn't in the best frame of mind to fully enjoy it.

Weird. I've been doing some research on blockbusters recently (ahh, sweet HDC Idol challenge) and apparently Monsters, Inc. was the #44 highest domestic box office grossing movie of all time.

Ain't that bad.

Australia

Hugh Jackman was very good, and the scenery was pretty...but otherwise, utter trash. Formulaic, by the books "epic drama" that fails miserably.

If you all you want is to look at some admittedly well done landscape shots, this is your movie. If you want characters to give a fuck about or a plot that you haven't seen ten million times already, avoid this like the plague.

Watched it again this morning...and for me, that really says something. No matter how much I enjoy a movie, it's usually months at the very least before I get around to revisiting it.

This movie completely and totally blew my mind. Everything about it is nigh on to perfect - the art direction (and the visuals in general), the score, the acting, the theme of life and death...the only thing that brings it down slightly is the script, which has some minor flaws (mostly in the dialogue), but otherwise - simply stunning.

Aronofsky has to be one of the most brilliant directors working today - you have no idea how excited I am to check out The Wrestler.

Only just noticed this. You are welcome. :)

I totally agree about Aronofsky. He and Paul Thomas Anderson are two craftsmen who have been pioneering some really awesome pieces of cinema. Both are directors whose movies are a "must watch" for me.

And more people need to see The Fountain. Its one of those movies which gives the feel of being an underappreciated amazing piece of art.

Starting to sound like he might get some Academy recognition this year, too - which would be awesome. Doubt he'll win anything, but the buzz is making a Best Director nom look like a definite possibility.

Blues Brothers 2000.

Okay, revisits and re-imaginations always take a huge backstep from the originals for some reason. This one is no different.

The original was really witty, clever, with plenty of gags, car chase sequences, and subtle humor moments, all in all a ball of fun. The sequel - disappointing. I waited and waited for something good to happen, but it just never did.

Maybe one main reason is my expectations. After watching the original, they are always going to be high. I should have learnt my lesson of lowering em after watching Caddyshack 2, but I guess I haven't learnt it yet.

I still like Dan Aykroyd though. I cannot bring myself to hate the guy.

X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE

I loved the television show and seeing Mulder and Scully is still enjoyable, but this really did feel like just a long episode of the show instead of something bigger. Not bad, but not great either. I does manage to bring up a really interesting question of faith and redemption, but it is sidetracked by a truly silly plot.

If you liked the show it's worth a watch, but I'm gald I didn't go see it in the theater.

6/10

The Assassination of Jesse James - not what i was expecting, not a typical western, and definitely not a good movie to watch when you're feeling down, but very good nonetheless.
Re-Cycle- I've pretty much given up on these japanese super natural movies. this was bad, often laughable, and cliche as hell.
Dance Of The Dead - something that should never be mixed - teen highschool movies, and zombies.

Taps (1981)

Holy Crap! I had forgotten how completely fucked-up this film was. This kind of film could never get made in today's climate. For those of you too young to remember this gem, it's about a military academy being forced to close its doors due to budgetary reasons, but the students won't let that happen. The students (heads filled with delusions of military might) decide to take command of the school by force and all hell breaks loose. Young Tim Hutton, Sean Penn and Tom Cruise all deliver great performances. Ronny Cox and George C Scott round out the cast.

Fucking crazy.

Loved it!

8/10

La Chat Noire 12-07-2008 05:10 PM

Lars and the Real Girl...it wasn't at all what I expected, but it was a decent watch. It was cute and quirky and the acting was outstanding IMO. I thought certain parts could have gone into more depth, but overall it was well done. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10.

"The man who knew too little"
I really liked this one - have only ever seen it once before unexpectedly during a movie marathon when it was originally released.
Funny, probably Murrays REALLY funny films of old...I still have hope we'll see THIS Bill Murray again someday.
Good stuff, glad I came across this film again.

Saw Punisher Warzone last night

The plot was, there. Kinda mostly
The acting was, pretty damn good for some (I like Ray Stevenson, a lot after this), not so great for others (Reports of "italian stereotypes are not unwarrented)

The action: INFUCKINGCREDIBLE. The body count was mindblowing. Heads exploded constantly in the fight scenes, and they werent happy to leave them all at just gunshot wounds (the opening scene with Frank of the table with the flare opens up with, I wont say, but there was a lot of blood :))

As far as the bad reviews it got, anyone who went in with the illusion that this was going to be like any of the other comic based movies that came out this year was, well, stupid. It lived up to what I personally expected from something base don the punisher; ultraviolent. Probably because I have a little girl myself, I totally bought the sappier moments of the movie.

But those were few, and necessary to care about the victims as something other than "girl and woman in trouble". And they lead to a guy getting the entire eye/nose part of his face punched in (LITERALLY :D) and another getting his head blown off with a shotgun.

Go see it. If you just want to see a bunch of people get shot, stabbed, slashed, blown up and beheaded, go see it.

_____V_____ 12-08-2008 04:04 AM

Punisher: Warzone.

What Vod said. Plus, you may criticize the casting as much as you want, but I thought Ray and the guy who played Jigsaw did extremely well (overlooking the slight accent).

But, above all, this is exactly how a Punisher movie should be like. Forget Dolph, forget Jane...this is old-school Punisher - the dude who created history for Marvel. From start to finish, Frank Castle achieves what Frank Castle should be - a total badass. It is Punisher vs Jigsaw from start to finish, and it is exactly that.

Fast-paced, gritty violence, entertainment unlimited. Satisfaction guranteed.

Hell Yeah :)
Ray Stevenson is a monster. He is freaking huge and completely sold the image. There are several scenes of him standing with his legs parted slightly, a gun in one hand, staring down with that godaamn evil glare, and it felt like you were looking at the cover of Punsiher issue or one of the posters they made.

Just like all the other comic movies that came out this year, you can tell the director and writer had a genuine love for the subject. Or they faked it REALLY well.

Oooh... boyfriend and I sooo want to see this, because we both loved Ray Stevenson in Rome and were so psyched when we read about him being the new Punisher. Can't wait now!

No, according to the writer/director its based on an incident when he was a kid where some weirdo was going house to house asking if someone was there and there were break ins. Or something equally retarded.

Dark City - Director's Cut

Maybe its just been too long since I watched the theatrical version, but I really didn't see much difference here. Glad to see they axed the ridiculous opening narration, but otherwise it was pretty much the same.

Still - awesome movie. Easily on par with The Matrix as one of the best sci-fi flicks of the late 90's.

Think of it as picking up a visual version of an 80s Marvel Punisher comic. You are gonna savor every moment of the flick after that.

The X-Files: I Want To Believe.

Ok this may be a long and overdrawn episode of the TV series, and granted it has a very interesting premise too, BUT what I didnt like about the flick was the "forced" chemistry between Mulder and Scully.

***MINOR SPOILERS***

The whole scene in the bed, the couple kissing scenes...look forced, and are put in just for the sake of making the curious viewer happy ("Will they finally kiss? Will they finally get in bed?" ). What made the original TV series a bestseller was the "distance" between the leads, here there is none.

Anderson looks old, and withdrawn and haggard. Its like "I am tired of playing Scully for the umpteenth time, but since I dont have many other choices...bring it on one more time." Duchovny tries his best to be enthusiastic, but falls short of delivering. Amanda Peet is actually refreshing to watch. There are some really notable scenes, but overall, the movie gives off the feeling of being flat.

I hope they stop re-hashing this franchise after this one.

Yeah I can't wait to see the Punisher. I'm so glad they went back to what it should have been. The other two movies were just so hollywood and they finally have a REAL punisher movie(from what I've seen). It wasn't meant to be a mind expander, just action and violence. That Ray Stevenson IS the punisher, the first second I saw the trailer, not that pussy Tom Jane and Travolta...Hollywood bullshit.

Thats the funny thing, I like Thomas Jane, I really liked him in the mIst, but he looks more like "Dad you wouldnt want to start a fight with" than "hardened killer bent on brutal justice". He look slike a nice guy. Stevenson look slike he CAN be nice, but that he could cut your head off without a second thought.

Or snap a woman's neck twice for pulling a gun on him ;)

"Real men" A seemingly little known (well, nobody I've ever talked to seems to have seen it but me) early 80's comedy with James Belushi back when he was funny, and John Ritter, well, back when he was alive.
It's funny, what can I say? I really enjoyed this one the first time I saw it at the age of about 13, and again kept me entertained some 15 years later.

The Cooler.

William H. Macy is a "cooler" - someone whose luck is so bad casinos keep them around to bring bad luck to other gamblers. Alec Baldwin plays his boss, an old school Las Vegas casino owner who can't adjust to the new Las Vegas.

Really interesting indie film with a few missteps, but overall a great story and William H. Macy is brilliant as always.
