Monster on the Campus

I loved this one...there's just something magical about old school sci-fi/horror flicks like this. They're usually cheesy and the science rarely makes any sense, but that just makes 'em all that much more fun.

:)

Midnight meat train.

*spoiler ahead*

I have a few complaints about this one...the fact that it was pretty much "the night flyer" with the slightest twist, the lack of good dialogue, the (I'd rather see ketchup than this...) digital blood allover the place, and following the same "let's throw in a bleak ending" they seem to deliberately put in every single horror film these days...not to mention the second Jones coughs blood, at least one element of the ending is damn obvious from then on.

*spoiler done*

other than these few complaints...not bad...the atmosphere was good, the concept...kind've interesting...would probably make a great beer film.

First time? I LOVED that movie, a real gem in every aspect.

District B13 and Vertigo for me, keepin' a friend busy while his girlfriend set up his surprise party. He threw his slurpy at her (ok, at the whole crowd that yelled "surprise).

The Ghost Ship (1943)

First Lewton movie that I've seen in a long time...absolutely loved it. Richard Dix was amazing, and the atmosphere is just to die for (of course).

One of his lesser praised flicks, but I'd put this damn near on par with Cat People and The Body Snatcher (my favourite Lewton flick)

"Heaven With A Gun" (1969)
-Glen Ford

A former gunfighter turned preacher rides into a small town just as a range war between cattleman and sheep herders starts to escalate.

Entertaining. above average "B" western. Good performances by Ford (as always) but the film is nothing new, Nothing great, but watchable.

SamCostello 10-19-2008 11:29 AM

Teddy Roosevelt, An American Lion – a three-hour History Channel documentary. An interesting film, full of good detail and insight and lots of appealing early movies. I felt like the way it glossed over Roosevelt’s imperialism was a bit of a weakness, but still a solid film.

Turistas

I liked it a lot more than Hostel or Welcome To The Jungle because the story was a lot more believable but ultimately it was a case of who fuckin' cares. I'm really starting to lose my patience with modern horror flicks especially the bigger studio stuff.

Fireproof
I understand it might be helpful to the audience it's after but it sure as shit isn't saving my marriage.
The big white guy was funny, the rest was just a long public service announcement for Jesus

haha, you pretty much nailed it, elvis.

----------------------------------

so last night was my fourth annual horror movie marathon, and we watched:

the monster squad
the cabinet of dr. caligari
horror of dracula
onibaba
i drink your blood
a bucket of blood
house of 1000 corpses
blood and black lace
the beyond

it was fun, but a lot of people wouldn't stop talking (loudly) about pointless stuff, made it hard for the people that really wanted to watch the films.

newb 10-19-2008 08:21 PM

The Strangers

meh......kind of bored me

Feast 2

not as good as the first.....some interesting bits ...some of it was a mess. Gulager is not afraid to push the boundaries though....I'll give him that.

Cool list you finally came up with. That sucks about people being jerks though. Was there drinking involved? It's pretty easy to tell film freaks and normals in a situation like that. The freaks are actually watching the movie...

yeah, i was really impressed with about the first forty minutes or so of this one. i thought they did a great job playing with the pacing and slowly introducing suspense and tension. the scene where the record starts skipping and they're making all that noise was really really well done.

after that, though. i definitely have to agree with "meh".
went downhill fast.

Death Race.

Not so much as a remake per se, its more like a re-take of the cult classic. My respect for Paul W S Anderson as a filmmaker went up by a wee bit, and I thought I caught Roger Corman's name under exec producing credits too. Its definitely recommended for anyone who doesnt mind a fast and mindless racy action flick, with ample doses of cheesy dialogue thrown in for good measure.

The effects are not limited to any budgetary restrictions either. Jason Statham is no Stallone or Carradine, but he does a competent job. My only gripe - Tyrese Gibson. For some reason the guy just annoys the heck outta me. Rest of the cast round off beautifully, with a nice little touch by Joan Allen. Pretty refreshing to catch a glimpse of Robin Shou too, after a long gap.

Is it great? Nope. Good? You can say so. I would definitely recommend it to Urge, Newb, Elvis, Return, Flayed and others who dont mind enjoying 90 minutes of cheesy, fast and fun-filled action stuff. If you are a serious movie critic though, stay the hell away from this one.

Elvis are you listening? This one's right up your alley, bro.
