There will Be Blood is a masterpiece...by all accounts, it should have kicked No Country's ass at the Oscars last year.

I'm Not There is pretty damn cool as well, but I found I was left wishing Ledger + Bale's versions both had more screentime. Still, its a great concept that's executed really well - you should like it.

I still disagree with you there. There Will Be Blood had Oscar written all over it. Long. Great performances. Epic feeling. But No Country For Old Men had something to say- it was culturally significant. It was daring and provocative. Its Best Picture victory proved that the Academy doesn't necessarily always pick the picture that was born to be beautiful.

Ah, this discussion again, I see? :p

I'll agree that No Country is a great movie, and I'll admit that it's nice to see the Academy giving recognition to something that's beyond their usual sensibilities. However, I think it goes down to one fundamental fact: TWBB is just an all-around better movie. Better acted, better written, better directed...just overall better.

Yes, No Country might technically be a little bit "deeper", but if you dont think There Will Be Blood was culturally significant, you really need to watch it again. It might not have had as much to say about the human condition in general, but it touched on some meaty issues all the same, I daresay was more topical and current, despite being a period piece.

TWBB has a full cast of brilliant actors. Day-Lewis is an obvious pick and fully deserved his Oscar (of course), but even the supporting cast was incredible. Paul Dano, Kevin J. O'Connor...Dillon Freasier has to be one of the greatest child actors that I've ever seen. You have to admit that despite some powerhouse performances, No Country certainly had some weak links - Kelly Macdonald stands out in that respect, barring her final scene. And whoever played her mother was just laughably over the top.

I'd never, ever, ever go so far as to sday that No Country for Old Men is anything less than an amazing movie, or that it didnt deserve the awards that it won. I just think that There Will Be Blood deserved them more, thats all:p ;)

BATMAN: Gotham Knight (2008)

http://www.dvdspot.com/covers/2/1272087986.jpg

The most annoying thing was some times Bruce Wayne looks like a young Japanese man or some times Batman's costume looks weird. 4 out of 6 stories disappoints me. Overall, it's rentable only for the die hard Batman fans.

kung fu panda (2008)

solid story, good cast, and a great balance of humor and action, with plenty of nods to the genre.
i was especially impressed with the fighting sequences, though.
i still didn't like it as much as WALL·E, although this is definitely one of few exceptional cgi kids' films to come out in recent years.

That's good to hear... I was curious about it since I read the book (which I thought was pretty damn good). I'll have to check out the flick.

Hellboy 2 - fun enough - but nothing earth shaking

Journey to the Centre of the earth. ...

now this one has been advertizes as 3D ... so you know the movie will be weak - you're just supposed to enjoy the 3D effects. We paid for our tickets - asked where do we get the 3D glasses - and were told that it's only 3D in SELECT theatres.

fuckers.

so yeah - it would have been worth seeing in 3D but as a regular movie it was crap. and i was pissed.

I thought so.

Good performances. A few laughs. Not plenty, but good action. Sure there's flaws, such as the finale's laughable ''villain'', but overall it's a fun movie. If you go in with the lone expectation of being entertained, you should enjoy yourself.

SamCostello 07-13-2008 04:03 PM

Miracle Mile – A movie about nuclear war paranoia in 1980s LA, starring Anthony Edwards. Stupid; I turned it off after about 40 minutes.

The last movie I saw through to the end was: Ace in the Hole – A great Kirk Douglas movie about a crooked newspaper man trying to claw his way back to the big time on the back of a trapped miner. Good stuff.

Wall E- Funny, enjoyable...would have been loads better if I could have strangled the bitch that had to add commentary for her child's sake behind me, but what the hey.

Unleashed- loved it.

Southland Tales- I love The Rock and think he is a diamond in the rough as an actor, if only he could be cast right.
This movie was meant to be meandering and abstract, I get that- but they REALLY needed to remember not to lose it's audience along the way.
Could have been an excellent movie....but just wasn't.

Posher778 07-13-2008 04:49 PM

Watching The Signal tonight... I can't wait.

Then The Wristcutters, and Otis.

Donnie Brasco - Damned fine movie.

fantastic movie.

stupid ? not in the least.

Elvis_Christ 07-13-2008 05:38 PM

Don't remember much about Miracle Mile except that I dug it when I was a kid.

Watched Kids yesterday afternoon. Found it a lot more unsettling than when I first saw it years ago.

Great film. The day it came out on DVD, Dr. Carpenter told me to buy it. he called it the most cynical film ever made... and he might just be right

Yep. Truly one of Wilder's most underrated films.

Not a big action-movie fan.

This was one of the best i've seen in a very long time.

Over over-the-top action and funny lines here and there made it quite a watch.

fun little heist movie. Jason Statham is such a likable actor.

Man with the Screaming Brain

You know...I was a little bit let down. It was a fun movie, but I was expecting more from Bruce. He was in top form, as always, but the script was pretty lackluster. It had it's moments, but I really wouldn't recommend it unless you're a die-hard Bruce Campbell fan.

James Whale 07-14-2008 02:47 PM

The Ruins

Pretty boring excursion into LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS,DELIVERANCE, DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS and even Hichcock's LIFEBOAT territory. Boring dialogue mixed with gross gore; however, I did get all itchy and paranoid about things burrowing in my skin. I give it a D+.

I was disappointed with this one. Had a couple of cool moments but is pretty average. Loved the bit in the restaurant!

Last Watched:

Fortress 2

The original is one of my favorite prison flicks but the sequel doesn't live up to the original. Blandly scripted and no over the top fun moments like its predecessor.

The Ruins - 6/10
Not bad for bubble gum horror. The plant CGI was cool. I also like Jenna Malone. She's a pretty good actress.

The_Return 07-15-2008 08:49 AM

Sunset Blvd.

This is only the 3rd Wilder film that I've seen (after Ace in the Hole and Sabrina), but I'd really have to consider him one of my favourite writers/directors. There are very, very few people out there with an ear for dialogue like this man.

I loved the other two movies, but this is just the definition of a masterpiece...pretty much perfect in every way. If you consider yourself a fan of film and you haven't seen this, you really owe it to yourself. Brilliant, brilliant movie.

James Whale 07-15-2008 10:32 AM

Shadow Of A Doubt.

SHADOW OF A DOUBT Is a quietly creepy venture into American menace; Hitchcock's juxtaposition of humor and the macabre is sublime.
NORTH BY NORTHWEST has plenty of plot twists mixed with tongue-in-cheek humor; this film, of course, has the iconic images of a plane chasing Grant through farm fields and Grant and Saint dangling from the faces on Mount Rushmore. The sexual innuendo is very strong. It even has a train going through a tunnel right before Grant and Saint make love ; you can't get more suggestive than that! All film students should study every frame of this.
