The Brain Machine 1977
Bizarre mish-mosh of a plot involving a government funded experiment in some kind of mind control. Nothing really makes sense, and it would all just seem like far fetched gobbledy gook if we didn't know about MK-ULTRA. After that, nothing seems too outrageous. Cheap production, wooden acting, lackluster direction, still kept me watching till the end due to my interest in conspiracy theories and whacko shadow government stuff. Notable for an early role by Gerald McRaney- that's right, the Simon & Simon guy. |
Couldn't sleep so I knocked another one off my Netflix queue. '5 Dolls For an August Moon', a hokey Mario Bava movie made in 1970. A handful of wealthy and ruthless couples end up stranded on an island with a very swank villa. There is a formula everyone wants from a professor there which would lead to great wealth, so naturally people start dying. It is basically a whodunit. A lazy effort from Bava would would do the same thing much better just a couple yeas later in Bay of Blood. Apparently he was assigned to direct this movie with only a week's notice and only gave a perfunctory effort. Not really worth watching unless you want to see a very heavily dated 70's movie. At least it is not long. Edwige Fenech is stunning in this movie though, she nearly makes it worth it, and Bava knows where to aim his camera when she is on scene. She is so smokin' hot in this movie that I can award her a perfect 10 with no reservations.

Tourist Trap 1979.
This is a freally freaked out film and I quite enjoyed it. A prime example of Backwoods Horror. Chuck Connors, TVs The Rifleman acts his heart out as an insane psychopath, even adding a touch of Southern accent to his role. Tanya Roberts from Charlie's Angels and That 70s Show is gorgeous as one of the citified interlopers into our backwoods setting. The story is over the top, but it's all done with a deft touch, and the result is a fun movie. Even caught Ve Neil's name in the SFX credits, so I guess she HAS been in the industry a long time. Recommended. |
Bloody Wednesday 1988
Confusing and ultimately lackluster low budget thriller about a man with mental problems who ends up massacring a bunch of people in a cafe. Flat acting, tepid direction, poor script. Not much to recommend it. |
Magnum Force
this second Dirty Harry movie aged pretty well. |

The opening scene with all the traps going off in the house is just brilliant. |
