"Dead of the Nite" 0/10

Found footage crap at its absolute worst.

Pacific Rim

It was like watching Jax play rock 'em sock 'em robots. Even Clay was there. It was a good monster movie. But I wasn't jazzed about it like I get with Godzilla.

cheebacheeba 01-26-2014 07:04 AM

Escape Plan.
Hm, it was ok. Little disappointed, but not entirely bad.

Pacific Rim..

Watched it at home for the first time (since seeing it in the theatre)

Watched it with all the criticisms in mind - and i still don't get it -
I probably enjoyed it even more the second time - appreciating the details i didn't catch first time around.

this is a fun movie

What a coincidence... first time in this thread, and I just saw Pacific Rim for the first time on DVD. Bought it for $5 actually. It was awesome! It looked great. I'd say this was the best looking giant monster movie I've ever seen (and I've seen most all of them). I usually prefer any type of media for a monster over CG, but the CG monsters didn't bother me at all, they had a good organic feel within the film.

The story was fun, and there was enough depth to carry the film. I cared just enough about the characters. The story and characters were cliché and didn't have much depth, but that's OK. It was no Matrix; but I don't want to see a film with the depth of The Matrix every time anyway.

Indeed. As a Godzilla film aficionado, there's usually a lot of myth, symbolism, spirirt and tradition that go into the craft; which I feel runs down the center of the suspension of disbelief. Pacific Rim doesn't have that. I'm looking forward to the new 2014 Godzilla film.

Couple interesting things from wiki about it:
Quote:

At WonderCon 2013, Guillermo del Toro expressed enthusiasm for a potential crossover between Godzilla and del Toro's Pacific Rim—another Legendary Pictures kaiju film—but stressed that no such plans are in place.[106] In an interview at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, Edwards expressed an interest in making a sequel that uses the "Monster Island" concept used in Destroy All Monsters.
Quote:

In August 2004, Yoshimitsu Banno, who had directed 1971's Godzilla vs. Hedorah, announced that he had secured the rights from Toho to make a Godzilla IMAX 3D short film at his Advanced Audiovisual Productions (AAP) production company. The film was tentatively titled Godzilla 3D to the Max, and was to be a remake of the Godzilla vs. Hedorah story.[23] In 2005, Banno and producer Kenji Okuhira added American Peter Anderson, ASC 3-D as the cinematographer, visual effects supervisor and as a co-producer on the project.[23] In 2007 through Anderson, American producer Brian Rogers was introduced to Okuhira and Banno and he was added to the project. In 2007, also through Anderson, Kerner Optical then came on board to develop the technology and to produce the 3-D film.[23] And with Kerner's backing, in the Fall of 2007 the team met with Toho in Tokyo where they re-negotiated this production to then be released as a feature length 3-D theatrical production.[23]

In 2008, with Kerner facing financial troubles, Rogers, Anderson and the then-proposed director Keith Melton met with Legendary Pictures where the production was pitched as a 3-D theatrical film. In 2009, it was "green-lighted" (approved) by Legendary to go to production.[24] From the AAP production team, Banno and Okuhira would remain on the project as executive producers and Rogers as a producer.
Would have be great to see a big remake of Godzilla Vs the Smog Monster (Hedora). There will be a new modern Godzilla origin tory, and it will otherwise be the real Godzilla, but other than that, don't know about the plot. I hope the aspect of Hedora will still be there, but who knows.

Filth

Thumb resize.

I was a bit dubious about this one and was ready to be disappointed but thankfully I was wrong. Of course it's nowhere near as dark or gritty as the book and I pictured more of a scumbag in the lead role but it still worked. If you're into dark fucked up humor you'll love this one... if that's not your thing (or easily offended) you're probably going to want to steer clear. A solid adaption and a very entertaining film.

Ferox13 01-27-2014 01:23 AM

^Yeah I enjoyed it a lot.

I thought James McAvoy might have been too young for the part but he did an amazing job. I imagined Dougray Scott in the lead role. I dunno why they dropped the racial motivation for the murder, it weakened it a bit (or maybe I missed something). And of course there was no tapeworm.

I am reading Bedroom Secrets of the Masterchefs at the moment - I thin it'd make a good film. It's like a weird version of The Portrait of Dorian Grey.

I hope they finally get to do Porno - it looks like Ewan McGregor is on board at last. I don't think it'll be that close to the book though. which was good but Welsh hasn't surpassed his debut novel with any of this later works.

Angra 01-27-2014 08:11 AM

"Spring Breakers" 1/10

Just.... just awful.

Solid sequel but I preferred the original although this had some more impressively staged fight scenes. Loving these lower budget action films at the moment!

Done right it definitely would make a good film. I'm hoping Porno will go ahead too. Filth was his best book next to Trainspotting (he's always in the shadow of that it seems) but I've enjoyed the majority of his stuff especially Glue.

I expected someone older in the lead of Filth too and more out of shape and decrepit looking.

The Locals (2003). The movie is a low-budget New Zealand horror flick that I watched simply because it was released the same year as Return of the King. In short, I didn't like the film, which compromised of a lot of drawn-out car chases and much aimless wandering through the country-side. However, I was rewarded with a little tidbit; In the first ten minutes of the film, the protagonist admits his girlfriend dumped him because he didn't like the LOTR films. Hmm, after a bit of consideration, I do think I would dump my boyfriend without a second thought if he didn't like the LOTR trilogy. But that's just me.

"Daddy's Little Girl" 6/10

Australian horror flick.

First half moved on at snail pace with not much happening. Last half was pure torture porn. Very graphic and well made, might i add.

Normally i'm not much of a torture porn fan, but in this case I have to admit, I kinda enjoyed it.

shadyJ 01-28-2014 04:12 AM

I saw The Haunting in Connecticut. It was pretty standard. For modern haunted house movies not on the level of Insidious or The Conjuring but watchable. It had the usual stupid tropes like if the house was haunted why not just MOVE?! But of course the family is always too financially tied to the house for that. What was dumb about this on is the family in question had TWO houses: hey guys just go live in the other one!!!!

I had a feeling this would be bad when I saw one of the Underworld Vampires as the main bad guy. Didn't know it was demons vs gargoyles. The trailers don't show a female character either. At least Underworld had Kate Beckinsale.

Burial of the Rats (1995)
http://iv1.lisimg.com/image/1502547/...ats-poster.jpg

This is either the best film ever or the worst - it is closely based on the Bram Stoker story about a group of furry bikini man hating women who raid the local country side to...well to raid. Young author, Bram Stoker gets caught up in their feminist antics and in love with one of the buxon blonde amazons. More stuff happens and the ratqueen, Adrienne Barbeau cuts the head of a rat with a mini guillotine. Good stuff.

The Horror fan 01-30-2014 03:26 AM

Dead.tv (2014)

This movie was about a person, who wants to re-boot an old horror series, in the movie world but added the big brother element to the re-boots.

When he was casting, he finds the most messed up kids, from druggy to a killers, all into one movie, as soon they all come together.

Actually, it take a while for the killing to start and when the killing dose start they are far to apart at times.

However I found some of kills really cool, some decent kills that I really liked, one made me look away.

also there were few twist and turns in this movie, first twist okay but it just silly by the end of it.

The acting was decent for slasher movie.

5 out of 10 I didn't hate it but i didn't love either!

The Black Water Vampire (2014)

Here go again, with another Found Footage movie.

First hour is was just re-make of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT , instead word Witch was Vampire.

The set up of movie was same as ^.

How they interview the people about Witch in TBWP, the same thing happens here, then they Vampire makes marks in the wood, just like the Witch made those signs in the wood.

And did something mark there tent, yes, a bit like the rock signs out of the tent in TBWP and if that was not bad enough , the first hour of the movie, was very, very, very, very boring.

However unlike THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT , they do show creature and the last 20 mins were things start happen. ( I was so bored by then, I could less what happens, I just wanted the movie to end.)

When finally get to see the Vampire looked more like creature then anything, I didn't find it scary at all, I actually find it funny looking and every time appeared out of the blue , I laughed .

There was small sub plot near the end of the movie, were one the campers were taken by it and lead to very strange but funny ending.

I don't know if ending was meant to creepy but I found the scene odd but very funny at the same time.

3 out of 10 if wasn't for last 15 mins, I would have gave it a zero!

American Weapon (2014)
This also know as Blood Shed not to be confused with the upcoming movie Blood shed (2014)

Blood Shed is the story of six beautiful travelers who head to the mountains for a getaway weekend, only to be terrorized by a homicidal war veteran, who has been programmed to kill without remorse.

It was another slasher movie, I was in slasher mood and I just could not really get into this movie at all.

I found everyone to be really annoying, the killing dose not take long to start , first part of the movie pace was okay but the last half of the movie just dragged on.

The kills was kinda of dull and boring, nothing new here, that we not seen 100 times before and done better.

I found the killer to be so stupid in some scenes, ( a Girl goes into a car, he break into the car, then girl goes out the other door and then the killer, instead of going around car to get her, He goes into the car, to get out car.

The acting was okay-ish, not bad acting but they so annyoing, you wish they died and the ending, well fit with rest of movie as the movie was just bland.

3 out of 10

They Live (1988)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps9a9f38cf.jpg

This was actually my first time seeing this and I liked it for the most part. I thought that the long fight scene between Roddy Piper and Keith David was unnecessary (and pretty lame), but I assume that they had to have Piper showing off his wrestling skills... somehow...?

I actually loved the concept and think that the execution was creepy. It's something that I'd actually love to see redone as I think it's a bit dated. I loved the very end, especially, when the satellite was destroyed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps7617f14d.jpg

Ehh. Wow. Well, I can't believe that this came out in 1999 as it has more of that 80's feel (for better or for worse). I absolutely loved the concept and love the creepy biotech but, honestly, I thought that the writing was pretty terrible. Also, I don't think I like Jennifer Jason Leigh. I don't think she can act very well. I don't understand her appeal TBH. Didn't get very far into it.

A Fantastic Fear of Everything (2012)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps0e16625d.jpg

I really, REALLY loved this. Sure, it was definitely purposefully odd, frenetic and a bit uneven, but here's a character piece set within the mind of a mad writer - How could it be anything else?

Quick glance on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, looks like this movie is NOT being received well critically, most likely because of how over-the-top and uneven the tone is. I think the ads are misleading too as they advertise something more madcap and less dark than what we get.

Felt like the darker side of Neil Gaiman wrestling his own Poe-like demons wrapped up with an oddly Wes Anderson-esque conclusion.

Oh, and Pegg is utterly captivating and brilliant. He carries a good 80% of the movie by himself; scenes with other characters are IMO the weakest.

Completely enjoyable and look forward to checking it out again.

I couldn't disagree more -

the fight was a high point in the movie for me ... completely necessary ... one of my all time favourites and I've seen a lot of people cite it as one of their favourite fights as well ... (another favourite of mine being the hallway fight in Gross Pointe Blank) It was very real, and unreal at the same time .. I thought I was absolutely perfect.

And I can't see it as being dated in a way that demands a remake .. I do see it as being dated in a fun and nostalgic way though.

It's one of my favourite films ... fun as hell from beginning to end ..

but yeah - that's the first time I've ever seen anyone not love that fight ..
