Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)

Without a doubt Bogart's third finest picture.

RETURN: You need to get the Anchor Bay uncut release. It'll compltely change your opinion on the film.

I'll put it on my Ziplist...have a TON of other films to go through, but I might get to it sometime after New Years:p

Gothic

Well I didnt much care for it at first, but once it gets going this is one damn good movie. Starts slow, but the end product is astounding.

This is only the 3rd Ken Russell movie that Ive had the pleasure of viewing, but I've loved all three.

crabapple 11-12-2006 04:16 PM

Oh, I remember having such fun seeing Gothic in the theatres when it came out.

I had just showed a high school friend "The Bride of Frankenstein" and he particularly loved the opening sequence showing the Shelleys and Byron. He got the biggest kick out of it. So when "Gothic" came out I said, "We gotta see this--this is basically the opening scene of Bride of Frankenstein expanded into a whole movie" and he said "LET'S GO!" and it was the most insane thing to see. Now I feel a hankering for it all over again.

Glad Im not the only one that liked this :)

So are you a fan of Russell's other work too?

If so, what do you reccomend? Ive seen this, along with Tommy and Altered States...anything else I should see?

crabapple 11-12-2006 06:39 PM

Well, of his "completely insane" films, I have a special love for Lisztomania. Not available in all formats, you can sometimes find a VHS tape released a few years ago. (I used to have 10 copies of it I bought at the local discount store, but I gave them all away!)

crabapple 11-12-2006 06:49 PM

Going back to Gothic for a moment, I noticed there seemed to be a similarity between the scene with John Polidori slamming his hand repeatedly onto the nail in the wall and the scene in Blue Velvet with Kyle McLachlan being beaten up by Dennis Hopper outside the car ("Feel my muscles!").

It's two different scenes, but both characters appear to be experiencing a liberation through pain, of sorts. Polidori is suffering his repressed love and seeks to distract himself by focusing on physical pain, and McLachlan's "Jeffrey Nothing" loses that last shred of the previous view of reality he was hanging onto.

I could be just imagining it, but I think of the two scenes as being very simlar.

I watched the omen666 last night, that kind made me sleepy then I fell asleep dureing the exorcism of emily rose. Yawn.

Day Watch (sequel to nightwatch)

holy shit...... this movie had enough things going on for 10 movies.
very busy - but not hyper kinetic busy like Domino..

it really flows well ... not sure how a 3rd movie is going to fit in but i'm looking forward to it .

Phalanx 11-12-2006 08:44 PM

Was that the russian made sequel, or the supposed USA sequel they were gonna make?
Does it follow on directly, or is there some spacing?
Same cast?
Where'd you see/get it?

Last night, watched the wedding singer.
I like this one...it's not laugh out loud funny, but a few good peices of humour thrown together...more like a girly film that's tolerable for guys...and Sandler not playing a complete retard is a nice change...to this day, I think it's one of his best films. How flawlessly they did the whole mid-80's thing was very cool too. Another top quality soundtrack too. Good family kinda movie this one...and they got Billy Idol, gotta love that.

bwind22 11-12-2006 11:41 PM

Well, I tried to watch Irreversible today, but the disc Netflix sent me was cracked (Don't ya hate that?) so I ended up watching a movie I had never heard of off of FEARnet...

Bloody Mallory

I don't know about this one... It wasn't the worst movie I've seen, but by no means was it good either. It's hard to tell if the acting was good or not since it was originally filmed in French and the dubbed to English, but the voice acting sucked! Not much gore. I'm not sure if something was lost in translation or if it's sloppy directing/editing but this movie's plot was rather hard to follow as well.

D+

Thank You For Smoking. The Will Ferrells and Adam Sandlers of the world had pretty much destroyed any interest I had in modern comedy, but this film went a long way toward restoring it. Finally, a comedy that relies on witty dialogue for its humor and not ridiculous slapstick/acting like a mentally challenged person. A very funny film, I highly recommend it. Overall: 8/10.

EarthSlayer 11-13-2006 06:19 AM

ZOMBIE 4

From my newly purchased Zombie movie pack. It was actually pretty good in a cheesy lame kinda way. I could not help but be amused at some of the dialog and acting , it was actually an ok movie in other ways too. If your looking for something good this isn't it but I still liked it. :D

urgeok 11-13-2006 06:19 AM

i love clever comedies ...
especially the clash of the sexes comedies from the 30s and 40s .. you'll never find wittier dialogue ... or anything anywhere near as good ever again..

that being said - i cant hate adam sandler..

i just rewatched a pile of his movies with a critical eye - and i find most of them pretty solid and entertaining (until the end where they all seem to die in the big happy resolution brought on by some heart warming speech, etc...)

they all seem to follaw that formula...

but his performance is always solid in my opinion..
i think he'll be like steve martin - his choice in films will improbe and he'll take on more mature subject material .. as was evident in click..

then as he gets old he'll try doing the old schtick again one last time.

(WTF was steve martin thinking when he did the pink panther ??!!)

i think its a path a lot of comedians take .. jim carry is doing it as well...

plus - to be honest - i dont mind goofy comedies now and then .. but i can clearly understand why they would bug other folks ..

someone just gave me infernal affairs 1,2, and 3

are they all good ?

Phalanx 11-13-2006 07:14 AM

The only copy I ever hired of the first, had subtitles that flashed for a split second...made it damn near impossible to watch without pausing on everything that got said. Dissapointing.
I've heard good things, at least about the first.

Just saw Pirates of the Caribbean 2, first time, it's just come out on dvd here...It was entertaining enough...I think I preferred the first one somewhat, but this is at very least a worth sequel. Nice effects, great stunt coreography.
Interesting possibilities for the third...

last seen : Damnation Alley

it was awful when i saw it at the show - it is just as bad now - but fun bad.

its funny - this came out in 1977 .. i was 16..
I still have a very clear memory of seeing this film, not liking it, and the walk from the cinema to the car. We parked further away than normal and it had snowed while we were in the theatre.

thats a 30 year old memory - i have no idea why it stuck with me.

there's a thread idea for general.

Roderick Usher 11-13-2006 05:38 PM

love Damnation Alley! The car from the movie is parked at a cutom car place about 5 miles from me - I'll try to snap a photo for you.

Just watched Dark Heritage (from the list)
wow, what a piece of shit.

terrible acting, incompetent directing, some of the worst (not even funny, bad) dialogue and leaps in logic and a heavily distorted soundtrack.

the monsters were kind of fun, but that's it. 2/10

The_Return 11-13-2006 06:05 PM

Un Chien Andalou

Not sure about this one. A little bit too out-there for my tastes.
