No, I thought it really had the potential to be a good kids "80's" horror flick, but it blew it. The story was just badly delivered.

The Equalizer (2014)
7/10

Denzel Washington does a fine job as a mysterious man who helps and protects others (and Marton Csokas commands a cold calculating villain). There's a decent balance between drama and well-shot and choreographed action sequences. The drama only seems to document the goings-on and parses-out a few literary analogy gems to match a character. Though it lacks sufficient emotional depth, it's good-willed.

ORIGIN 2015

A group of researchers uses an experimental cure for cancer on one of themselves.

Bland.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN (2011). Nothing great, but certainly not a flop either, although I thought my Wife had picked out the 1982 Arnold version. But once I saw Jason Momoa's name in the credits, understood why::wink:: Reminded Me very much of a GAME OF THRONES episode; extremely violent, similar looking sets/locales and two actors from GOT. ***

HAUNTED 2013

A paranormal investigator takes a group of skeptics to a haunted railway station.

Could have been good. Too dark and nothing really happened til the last 10 minutes or so.

Finally watched, "The Host" (2020) UK Shudder film after Hammerfan had recommended it. It was interesting. Fairly predictable but it was kind of fun.

Also watched, "The Witch" (2015). I thought it was excellent. A friend had recommended it. He said he liked it a lot but that it was slow. I think any faster and it wouldn't have had the same appeal. Reminded me of something Dante Tomaselli might have done if he had ever had a budget and a really good crew.

Got tricked by the trailer and plot, but a pile of ...

The Host trailer makes it look pretty good. I took a peak at Rottentomatoes and there's a huge difference between critics (25%) and audience (75%) scores. Critics calling it pedestrian and psycho ripoff, and how they hated to wait for the ending that was predictable.

Witch was slow -- poster child for the 'slow burn'. I agree, if it was faster it wouldn't make the same impact, as Alien and Rosemary's Baby.

How'd you find that "Summer of '84" one?

I'm glad you enjoyed "Host"! You're exactly right, it was predictable, but, fun. I've re-watched it a couple times.

I also like "The Witch". Although, I didn't like the ending. I would have done it differently.

I liked the ending of The Witch, but I might have been more inclined to have the young girl enter the old witches house first, no dialogue, just the old witch stripping her of her clothes/old life and then being led outside to a fire where others were arriving from the woods and then take flight.

If there's one thing I learned never to do with Horror films it's pay attention to critics...lol.

I think that was the 90's based one...I only saw the trailers, it actually looked alright.
Some kind of fuck up leads to an accidental death or some such, and it's kind of about the friend group turning on each other etc

Yea, I vaguely remember it’s about a boy and his friend with serial killer potential.

APT 212 2018

A young woman leaves her abusive husband and moves into an apartment where night after night she's bitten by what she believes to be some
sort of bed bug.

It was decent.

The Others is one of those films that somehow managed to elude me for a long time. You know how you have a film where you kind of want to watch it, but the right time never seems to come up? This was one of those.

It took me a while to get into it, but it was pretty good oveall and the end certainly delivered. Not a genuine classic, but a good way to spend an evening.

I’m always in the mood for movies like The Others. But I know what you mean.

I know what you mean; I have a lot of those movies "on the list". So you were actually able to make it all this time without knowing about the ending?

Yep, The Others is a slow-paced film; one has to sit in and relax. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Minor classic I'd say.

I didn’t like The Boy. Not really the same horror genre either.

The Others and The Innocents would make a good double feature.

I (very) vaguely knew how they would end up, but no exact details about the reveal. It is one of those flicks where the motto is "the less you know, the better". Otherwise, you will start interpreting things in function of what you already (think you) know.

Minor classic, indeed. A lot of things I liked about it.

Double Feature of two slow and very similar films? Comon Man! that won't sell tickets. ::big grin::

A good double feature is like Poltergeist (1982) and Firefox (1982).

If you HAVE to have The Others in a double feature, which I would never bother doing... I'd to go The Others and Scanners or Cabin in the Woods.

And rather forgettable too. The 'human story' doesn't get in the way of the CG monster fights, which looked good, had some well-choreographed fighting, and was fairly creative. The human stories and plotlines were awful, shallow, unfunny, unsuspenceful and without much heart. It deserved a much better script.

I'm just here to set you straight. Maybe a good pairing with The Others would be Eyes Wide Shut or The Crying Game. ::big grin::
