All I can suggest is that you change from bmp to jpg...that'll be for your post pics. As for the custom avatars, there's people here that can work that out for you...I'm not one of them.
I do, however sympathise, and think the TINY size limit on the avatar pics is some bitch shit.

Okay...Do this...Open the pic with paint (Just hit edit and it will open with paint)...Then go to "image"...and "Stretch/skew"...reduce horizontal and vertical to 50%, or whatever you want as long as you do them both evenly...click on "ok"...then go to file and "save as"...It's best to save as a j.peg
