Dracula--movie and book

Well, in the book, this opening sequence in the 15th century, with Dracula swearing an oath and all, just wasn't there. The book begins with Harker's arrival at Castle Dracula. In one speech he makes, Dracula talks like he's remembering being a prince in old Wallachia, or something like that.

This stuff about Dracula meeting in modern times a woman who is the reincarnation of the woman he knew hundreds of years ago. That's become such a cliche of vampire movies. I think the first movie to do that was the 1968 tv movie, Dracula, starring Jack Palance. But there is no suggestion in the book that anybody is a reincarnation of anybody.

There's a lot more. Read the book.

The Package (netflix).
Funny to start out with but really lost steam.
It was "ok".

I think two of the most annoying vampire cliches in modern times are A) vampire hunters being half-vampire and half-human (Like Blade from the Blade movies and Alucard from the Castlevania games) and B) vampires being the good guys who fall in love with humans and choose to only feed off animals (like in those shitty Twilight movies). ::roll eyes::

Avengers: Infinity War

7/10

A little slow in parts, fight scenes were way too long.

Slenderman
5/10
So slow in parts I actually dozed off. Wait for DVD, not worth the price of admission.

Angra 08-20-2018 04:47 AM

“The Devil’s Doorway” 7-8/10

Definitely one of the better hand-held horror movies I’ve seen. Quite suspenseful with lots of scares. The endning was a little disappointing tho.

Angra 08-20-2018 05:02 AM

“The Keeping Hours” 6-7/10

Supernatural, but not really horror. It might have you fall asleep from time to time, but give it a chance anyway just for the performance of Lee Pace.

“Our House” 5/10

This one felt like a horror movie made for children. Again, more drama than horror.

The Slaughterhouse Massacre? Gee, I hope there is no gore in that movie. :-) I'm delicate!

idoneus1957 08-20-2018 08:50 AM

another annoying vampire cliche

Another one I don't like is vampires who are conflicted and guilty about being a vampire. Now, take the scene in Brides of Dracula where Andree Melly as Gina comes back as a vampire, rising out of that coffin. Number one, she knows she's a vampire and already knows how to be one, doesn't have to go through a lot of training, like some vampires do in recent vampire movies. Two, she loves it! That's how a vampire should be.

Andree Melly was cute as the dickens. In fact, when I log off this site I am going to google a few pictures of her. For me, her occasional presence on the Benny Hill show was a special added bonus.

I agree. I mean vampires are supposed to be evil and prey on human victims for blood. But in modern vampire movies they try to make them out to be more humane than the humans. It just doesn't work for me...

Whenever I log into this forum, I scroll down the list of threads and find a lot of interesting threads that nobody has posted to for a long time.

Let's see, I guess I should throw in a reference to a recent movie, just to be on topic...I don't go to the movies much anymore...Hallowe'en IX (or whatever the latest one is).

There is a thread in the general forum called "Random Thoughts". Most of your posts could probably go there. ::cool::

This makes me curious to see him in Burning.

Dido that. I might give Infinity War a low 8/10.

Agreed, the massive-character fights were too long, more than that, some fights weren't even all that interestingly choreographed (like some of the Wakanda individual characters and the larger tribal fights), which are usually a strong point for Avengers' films. If they weren't going to make a fight unique, just show a quick three seconds and move on to something else. The film was over 2 hours, it's not like they needed to pad it.

I appreciated the serious nature of the story and the main villain, Thanos. So I enjoyed the story plot of Thanos trying to acquire all the Infinity Stones facilitating all the character interactions, which was usually fairly funny.

The forum is dying. I thought it was dead when it went down a few times this year for a while. But it came back. Still I only check in every Wednesday and there isn't much activity. Those popular topics and people with massive numbers of posts don't show up anymore. I guess they found Facebook sections or groups. I don't know. I'm not a member of Facebook.

When I joined up the forum was active but not as active as it was originally according to many. Still I joined up when there were contests and the forum was fairly active.

I barely post reviews anymore here because there is no discussion. Plus many with just lists and no comments. Some post normal movies as well which I still think is odd for a horror movie forum.

hand-held camera horror movies

I hate watching those hand-held camera movies. They give me a headache. If I realize that the movie I am watching is one of those, I think "Go buy a tripod, will you?"

My friend Roman says that his teenage son could make a better movie than The Blair Witch.

While technically you did mention The Blair Witch, posts like these would best be in " Random Thoughts". This thread is really more for the last contemporary movie you saw and maybe a little blurb on what you thought of it.

Looking forward to seeing this. I grew up in the "Dutch" Reformed church, but the pastors didn't wear collars, just suits; maybe a regional thing.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - Overall, it was a good sequel. I got a few good laughs and Will Ferrell was pretty good. The romance between Brick and Chani was a good change of tone, but the absolute highlight was of course the battle of the anchors.

A teen horror flick full of horrible personalities. And Uma Thurman.

Looked like a horror movie with a decent budget behind it.

Is there any teen horror flick without horrible personalities? This is the only one I can think of:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...vie_poster.jpg

This wasn't like your typical teen horror movie of the 1990's with all the annoying personalities and cliches like in Scary Movie (even though it has two of the same actors). The four main female characters had very real human characteristics. They were struggling with self-loathing and wanting to find acceptance like REAL teenagers, and they thought messing around with witchcraft would be the answer but the new power they discovered and abused ended up bringing out the worse traits inside them.

This is one of my many favorite movies so I give it a 8/10.

A Quiet Place 5/10

I watched the entire movie but I just couldn't get into it because I felt the writing was so piss poor. I mean if the monsters are supposed to be attracted to sounds, how come none of them came when the man and woman were blasting music? Or when him and his daughter were outside talking? Or when it bad when a baby was making baby noises and one of the Munsters was about five or six feet from it? Or the mother giving birth and screaming but making it out alive with her baby? I just honestly can't see how these things go unnoticed considering I don't have a college education in filmmaking but I am able to pick out such flaws in the logic behind the story telling that it just makes it seem like it was half-assed from the start with no intentions of going back and actually making it seem believable. I mean the creatures themselves were a rip-off and appearance of the creature from stranger things and then if that wasn't enough everything down to the noises it made were a ripoff of the creatures from The Descent. I mean before I even saw the movie that's what I thought of but I guess they found it necessary to put the rapid clicking sounds in there that the creatures from The Descent made right? All-in-all I find this movie horribly overrated and very badly written. I gave it a five because the acting was actually great and I don't blame the actors for what they are given to work with when all they want at the end of the day is a paycheck. I mean if it wasn't for the way the creatures were ripping off other creatures or just the terrible logic in the writing I might have given this a much higher score.
