Dark City
I don't really want to say a lot about this movie for fear of spoiling anything, so I'll keep this short and sweet. First off: The plot is incredible. If you thought The Matrix was thought provoking, this will blow your mind. The cinematography and overall design of this film are also incredible. Very dark, very surreal. Along with the spectacular effects, the whole movie looks great. The actors are all very good as well, especially Keifer Sutherland. Put simply, you have to see this movie. One of the best sci-fi films I've ever seen. 9/10 |
Ahem.
Jeepers Creepers 2: 5/10 Watchable, but not as good as the first by far. One part actually scared me though, if you really care you can ask me about it but i don't want to type it right now. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 8/10 I'm proud to own this one. Mina and the Moroccan guy are my favorites. The Mummy Returns 9/10... Most... Entertaining... movie... ever! I have it but haven't seen it in forever, and boy is it good. Dead End 4/10 I heard it was good, but it was just a giant plot hole story IMO. The family trauma stuff was done well though, but I found it to be just another one of those, "let's keep them guessing then not pull off a decent reasoning at the end" story. But then again, i've only seen one movie like that that pulled it off... |

The Hills Have Eyes (Remake)
Well, this didn't stray too far from the original, but it did amp up the gore quite a bit. I have always sort of thought the original Hills was pretty good, but not great and I guess I sorta feel the same way about this. The deformed family of inbreds maiming a group of stranded motorists is one of the older formulas in the horror film writing book so this film didn't really accomplish anything new in terms of plot. Aja did a good job directing, the acting was just fine and the story moved along pretty fluidly but like I said, there wasn't really anything new or groundbreaking here... All in all, this is not a bad remake, but I don't think it's in league with TCM or Dawn of the Dead's remakes either.... B |

I put Dark City in line with Exorcist III & Frailty. Brilliant movie, but for some reason no one seemed to care. I started working at a movie theater 9 months before Dark City came out. I watched it seven times. I hyped it to everyone who would listen.
Now, this brilliant little gem, along with Exorcist III & Frailty, has been reduced to bargain bin status. It's sad. |
Ab-normal Beauty. I liked this Asian movie, but it does start out pretty slow. The lead character becomes obsessed with death after she takes a picture of a woman who was hit by a car. For the biggest part of the movie, she does a lot of taking pictures of dead animals and reading books full of pictures of dead people, and she spazzes out a lot. There's also the requisite "incident" from her past that troubles her. All of that was weird, but it was the last 30 minutes or so that really grabbed my attention. She started getting these strange videotapes that show people being tortured and killed. It turns into a classic "whodunit" of sorts, but there are some pretty intense scenes. Warning: If you are sensitive to scenes of cruelty to animals or women, you might think twice before watching this movie. I didn't think the scenes were any worse than what I've seen in other movies, but I know people who freak out every time an animal or woman gets hurt. I just want to give everyone a fair warning.

Hostel
Let me start by saying that I wasnt really interested in seeing this movie in the first place. It looked pretty dumb, but I thought I should see it just to see what all the fuss was about. That said, now that Ive seen it, I still think it's a dumb movie, and still cant see what the fuss is about. I had the same problem as alot of people with this movie: It starts out like a bad porno. By the time it becomes an actual horror movie, it had already lost my intrest. The gore was good, the acting was surprisingly decent, but the plot was so mind-numbingly awful that I really couldnt enjoy it much. Basically, this movie is well made and well acted, but it has such a boring, straightforward plot that it really wasnt all that great. 5/10 PS- I did like the TCM reference near the end. |

I'm about sick of people slagging off this film how it starts so slow before it gets to the real horror. For fucks sake do you all need blood and gore in the first 10 minutes of every damn film you watch. Whats wrong with just getting to know characters and a simple plot? Yep the nudity was a little over the top and not at all realistic (well not in my experiance, strange that there were no woman slightly over weight naked), but come on all the classic slashers have tit shots to keep people interested. As for the not much happens, have people forgotten the Blair Witch (not singleling you out Return), I liked the film but really fuck all happens in that all the way through. People go camping and find pebbles and twigs in trees. But it still worked. Hostel wasn't trying to be the best horror film every made just a bit different from the run of the mill Scream clones, Japanese remakes and classic horror remakes. I personlly found it very entertaining, especially the Wicker Man music whilst they were all shagging, classic. But no it didn't make my top 25 list as it won't have the longevity of other films. |

Son of Frankenstein
Though it is nowhere near as good as the first 2 Universal Frankenstein films, this is still a fairly enjoyable outing. The plot is straightforward, yet still interesting. As the title would suggest, it centers around the son of Henry Frankenstein, who originally created the "monster". He returns to the village where his father lived and worked, only to be met with hatred by the townsfolk. He soon comes across Ygor, who has been protecting the "monster" after the explosion that supposedly destroyed him. I would say more...but that, my friends, would be spoiling it for you. Basil Rathbone does a very good job as the titular character, and Bela Lugosi's Ygor is quite possibly his greatest post-Dracula role. Karloff, playing the "monster" once again, isn't as good as in the previous installments. Lionel Atwill was one of the highlights of the film, playing the local detective whose arm had been ripped off my the "monster". Perhaps it would have been better if I had seen this prior to Young Frankenstein, because I found myself chuckling every time he moved his fake arm. The rest of the cast is pretty typical for supporting casts of the time period, AKA not very good. One thing that really stood out were the sets and their design. It almost seemed influenced by Dr. Caligari, which I found very interesting. This isn't one of the best Universal monster flicks, but it's still worth a watch. It's very slow, but still enjoyable. 6.5/10 |

I just watched The Dungeonmaster for the first time in around 15 years. It was, well,interesting....Richard Moll was a good demon guy, but the different sequences were all done by different directors and it was kind of choppy....at least they all agreed on one thing, they managed to show at least two sets of nipples and still get away with a PG 13 rating.....

Beyond the Wall of Sleep
A terrible movie. You could really tell that they tried hard to make this scary and menacing, but it was just so dumb... Just an example: the movie takes place in an asylum. One of the head shrinks is referred to as an "alienist" (which is actually the correct old-fashioned term for a psychiatrist.) However, at several points, another character calls him an alien. The main character wears a ridiculous wig, which makes it impossible to take anything he says or does seriously. My girlfriend and I spent the first 45 minutes laughing at it, and decided it wasn't worth finishing. So now it's been proven: Stuart Gordon is the only director who can do Lovecraft any justice. Overall: 2/10... 2 points awarded for unintentional hilarity. |
