Don't Breath... SO good. What a great concept for a horror movie...

Thelma (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/ejxwisq55/thelma-poster2.jpg After moving to Oslo for her college education, Thelma soon starts to experience some seizures as her religious upbringing couldn't hide her dark secret much longer into this new surroundings of urban life, freedom & friends. Raised in isolation, her parents tried their best to suppress Thelma's subconsciously-controlled strange powers all these years but the recent development of her romantic feelings for a new friend triggers some inexplicable chain of events; and as we know, every 'Jean Grey' (or her long distant cousin) must go through her own journey of self discovery with devastating consequences. This Norwegian thriller was somewhat like a slow burn, art-house take on a X-MEN spin-off sort of story. Though there were some lose ends but it was beautifully shot & acted, one of the finest offerings from 2017's European cinema. >>: B+ |
SAW.
I've yet to see the (probably disappointing) JIGSAW movie, and it's been ages since having watched any of these. We grabbed all 7 of the original series to watch before buying the new one on BluRay. Also, this time we'll watch them close enough together to actually follow in terms of the carry over characters and events...something I've never been able to do before. So, Saw...I still like it, but some of the acting is really glaringly atrocious, specifically from Cary Elwes...was this guy ever considered a "good" actor? I'm thinking not. He can play calm just fine, but the moment there's any emotional state it just becomes like someone doing a "bad act" of it. Yeesh. It's one of those movies that loses a bit of value from initial viewing and already being aware of the twist/s involved, but it's still somewhat watchable...I feel like killing Tapp off was a bit premature in the series, but I guess they didn't know if there'd be such a slew of sequels or not at the time. One thing I've never understood, is exactly why Adam was captured...and I still don't get it. Because he was a P-I? I mean a job is a job, right? Usually they're only catching out wrongdoers anyway...it just seems a petty reason to make him one of the "players". I did like Zep, although he seemed to be enjoying it a little too much. I think he was a bit of a precursor to a few of the other unstable assistant characters. Then when his tape is revealed...he's been poisoned and "has to" do this. He was a Janitor. He actually did/said something nice in the hospital so that Gordon could humanise his patients beyond a case number. It strikes me that he *probably* could have just talked to him...I think he'd be up for it, given his intro scene. I looked up some info on this. "inferiority complex"...I'm sure a lot of janitors might feel this way. "Talks about the doctors and their affairs behind their backs" - Maybe this is a plotpoint in later films but nothing in this one...and, is that THAT bad? I mean the main one he seemed to have issue with was Gordon. So that's some confusion for both the aforementioned characters...put together they kind of go against the whole Jigsaw killer "people who deserve it" type deal introduced when his character is further explored in later films, or at very least pretty lame reasons. A job, and a guy who'd have every right not to be greatly satisfied with life - These two decisions? They just make him come across as a prick. All in all, this is something of an iconic modern horror. I'd still give it a 7/10 for its (at the time) originality. |

El Bar - A In bustling downtown Madrid, a loud gunshot and two mysterious deaths trap a motley assortment of common urbanites in a decrepit central bar, while paranoia and suspicion force the terrified regulars to turn on each other. Found it good, enjoyed it. It lacked something, but can't get around what. |
You're Next:
After the opening kill, it starts off with a couple on their way to a family reunion (the parents are celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary). Things go south fairly quickly, first with the classic family argument, then with a (group of) killer(s) invading the house. Enjoyable stuff. Good build-up, a few good jump scares and a decent twists. - The smartest character (inevitably the one getting killed first) is set up well. - They layed it on a bit too thick with Zee's weirdness. - The ending with the cop is pretty funny. |

BLACKWOOD EVIL 2000
Found footage. 4 people investigate some type of evil farmhouse. Not really sure what the evil was and a lot was too dark to see but I enjoyed the lady that played the reporter. |

Loveless (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/wgjauo1d5/Loveless_HDC.jpg Like 'A GHOST STORY', another melancholic and one of the best films of 2017 with stunning cinematography, framing and direction. >>: A The Shape of Water (2017) https://s26.postimg.org/w3rwom14p/sh..._water_hdc.jpg The cast did an excellent job in their respective roles as it was beautifully written & shot but as a story, I found it quite ordinary; Del Toro played safe with the plot, nothing much new or twisted aspects in it as a romantic-monster movie. >>: B+ Phoenix Forgotten (2017) https://s26.postimg.org/44xqx8jx5/PHOENIX_FORGOTTEN.jpg Another average found footage flick inspired by Phoenix lights incident. Not bad, an okay time-waster but surprised to know that one of the producers was Ridley Scott!! >>: C Veronica (2017) https://s26.postimg.org/cafsvevbd/veronica.jpg Inspired by a true incident, it's pretty well made with good production value & cast but as a whole, it was just another 'Ouija session goes wrong and a demonic entity starts to haunts down a family'-kind of pretty average horror flick from Paco Plaza (one of the makers of REC.). >>: C+ |

IT (2017)
|
Saw Insidious: The Last Key last night. I enjoyed it. There were a few jump scares, but, there were equally as many genuinely creepy scenes.
8/10 |
Finally got to see the new It. Loved it! Looking forward to the next installment.
9/10 |
Saw 2 - Better than the first in some ways, worse in others.
Saw 3 - Never liked this one. Still don't. Saw 4 - Probably one of the more superior sequels in my mind...perhaps #1 after the original. Enriches Johns back story which I enjoyed. Few good twists and turns ;) Can't say I remember much of the ones that followed these. Not expecting much. |
Things like what the fuck?! and what the fuck was that?!! come to mind with the monsters in this one....New terms (to me anyway) like terrestrial first level possessed, point blank gunshots to the face, and first person cinematography make this a pretty good flick.

SCARY MOVIE 1991
Not the one you might be thinking of. Warren, a bit of a late bloomer, is about to nervously enter the town's annual house of horrors on Halloween night. Right before he goes in, he overhears that an escaped mental patient may be in the area and this sets his mind to working... Not bad. |
meh... I put this is the 80's section...

Girls Night -
This short horror film was posted in a separate topic but I guess no one picked up on it. It's only 10 minutes or so and basically concerns some foreign girls that unfortunately come across a killer. And the killer is creepy in every scene. The design of the killer reminds me of another character or person but I can't place it. I love the scene in the opening as I always wondered about people who live on the first floor in heavily trafficked areas that open their windows. Surely anyone can pop inside. It also reminded me of a scene early on in The French Connection. The later scene reminded me of Blair Witch and a few other scary horror scenes. It's worth a watch. I do wish there was more with the characters. Perhaps them noticing moved items or something. Maybe feeling another presence in the room to add to the creepy atmosphere. |

I'm working on the sequel right now, filming in one month! Thanks for the feedback, means a lot ;) |

Concussion (2015)
9/10 "In Pittsburgh, accomplished pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu uncovers the truth about brain damage in football players who suffer repeated concussions in the course of normal play." Much better than I expected. There is plenty of drama in the real-life story, and Dr. Omalu is a fascinating figure, and Will Smith does a fine job bringing him to life. The story has much to do with conviction, values, self-sacrifice and hard decisions. King King (2006) Netflix 7/10 I don't want to give too much away... but a film, and merchant ship, crew discover a giant gorilla and bring it back to 1933 New York... and back in 1933 New York, they hadn't seen a giant gorilla, not even from the future. It's a mildly fun film, with mildly likable or hate-able characters. There's some nice big screen CG visuals, especially in New York, but basically every action sequence goes on much too long. The film runtime is 3 hours and 7 mins. I think the film would have been more enjoyable if it were cut more tightly. I did quite enjoy the first 40 or so minutes, which take place before the ship leaves NY... which is a good part of the film to nail; as we do get a fair handle on the main characters, and it pay dividends. I would consider King Kong (2006) as my least favorite film of that name, after King Kong (1933) and King Kong (1976). Kong: Skull Island (2017) was better too. |
Just watched Super Dark Times last night. Wow, that was a really fun movie. Captured thhe awkward teens great. Y'all should check it out.

Godzilla: Monster Planet (2017) Netflix 6/10 My pal Sven said this was good... Meh.mmmm..... not... mmm... can't say agree. This is an animated Japanese offering, and "Episode 1" is out, and it's 1hr 27 mins... on Netflix. It's really more of a sci-fi military drama. So it's like this... in the intro... giant monsters reek havoc... er I mean wreaks havoc on Earth, just as an alien race reaches Earth after a long journey from their destroyed planet. They want to settle on Earth, and offer to kill Godzilla, but they are unsuccessful! So they take the remaining Earthlings on their space ship and flee Earth. They get as far as Jupiter ::big grin:: and it takes a long, long time... and then collectively the Earthling and Aliens (who look like humans) decide to go back to Earth and see what's up. Well, I don't think I'm giving too much away when I say... some how... Earth has gone through 10,000 years, but the escaping ship only 40 years, or something like that... you know whatever, these guys must be rolling dice, or something else, so we'll just go with it. So they find there's still a Godzilla there, and through science and military, they are going to try to destroy it and settle back on Earth. It really comes off quite sophomoric emotional jingoism and rather science militaristic action, but not in a good way. There's not a lot "godzilla stuff" going on. |
Brawl In Cell Block 99
8.5 / 10 A lot crazier than the trailer led me to believe. One of the best flicks I've seen in a long time. No nonsense hard nosed old school crime film with a dash of Riki Oh thrown in. Vaughn totally kills it. |
