Letherface (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/9rjcf5khl/image.jpg The idea was to explore the younger years of Leatherface...so this time they "tried to give a little different perspective" by putting him into a mental institution when he was a kid but after a break out he escaped with a few other lunatics and eventually returns to the farm & become 'Leatherface' at the very end! Although I didn't find it as horrible as Texas Chainsaw (2013) but as a whole it just turned out a very average 'lunatic criminals on run with a killing spree' sort of flick, not something that can be regard as a worthy addition to the franchise. And how much you cry out loud & say ‘this is not a TCM film, just an origin or back story of Leatherface, you just can’t make it a separate film as he’s the most iconic character of the franchise. Even if we take it as a standalone film, it’d still remain as just another very mediocre (or I won’t argue if someone says below average) flick. But I should say the initial idea or approach was fairly decent though. The 2003 remake & it’s prequel (2006) implied he was suffered from a facial disfigurement and a skin disease that caused severe deformities and tumors to his face which contributed his muteness & mental retardation but this time they wanted to show he could have supposed to be a normal kid but under certain circumstances, family issues and after some chain of psychologically affecting horrible events he forced to become the beast who eventually gain the notoriety & become known as Letherface; the problem lies on the rest…the story that they finally built on this idea, the execution and the tone. The gritty, dark & unsettling look & feel all over that a TCM flick supposed to carry was totally missing. But I've found one positive aspect and that is intentionally or not they are now just making those 2 Michael Bay produced TCM flicks [The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) & The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: THE BEGINNING (2006)] look really great by adding this sort of pointless, shitty installments to the franchise. Many fans of the first two original films didn't like or just straightway hated whatever Marcus Nispel & Jonathan Liebesman did respectively in 2003 & 2006 (and personally I liked them a lot) but now it just makes me wonder what would they think of now about Texas Chainsaw (2013) & this one!? Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo did surprise the genre fans with their 2007 debut feature INSIDE but sad to say, after that they couldn't make any major or good horror movie so far. Livid (2011) had an interesting premise but didn't turn out anything special and then 'Among the Living' in 2014 which was more or less as lame as their latest 'Letherface'. At least I won't get excited for their movies anymore. >>: C- |
"It" 8-9/10
"Annabelle: Creation" 8/10 Got halfway through "Cult of Chucky", which, in the beginning, I believed was a fan made movie untill I discovered the original Andy was in it. Not particularly good. Same as the last Chucky movie, except this time it takes place in an insane asylum instead of a big mansion. |
Dog Soldiers
My absolute favorite werewolf movie |

THE CANYON (2009). Pretty decent flick about a vacationing couple who don't utilize a Vacation standard rule: "Be Flexible". Nothing exceptional, but worth a look. *** |

Cult of Chucky (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/pkpbf38sp/COC.jpg >>: C- The Beguiled (2017) https://s26.postimg.org/lplxcipmx/Beguiled_17.jpg Not bad, though the story was kind of more suitable for X rated comedy, I guess. Colin Farrel reprise the role that Clint Eastwood did in 1971, I'd like to see that too sometime. >>: B Wish Upon (2017) https://s26.postimg.org/s4ky96wcp/Wish-_Upon-2017.jpg Another "wish will come true with a deadly consequence" horror-thriller and this time it's from the director of Annabelle (2014)! It turned out what I thought it'd be. >>: C- The Corpse of Anna Fritz (2015) https://s26.postimg.org/54eawuyix/Th...tz_-_Cover.jpg Thought it'd be something similar to THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE or at least an interesting horror film but it turned out a plain thriller that kind of reminded me of Deadgirl (2008) though, which I need to give another watch as I can hardly recall anything about that other than a necrophilia sort of subject matter. In compare to most other modern day Spanish thrillers, it was quite average but not bad. >>: B- |
Cult of Chucky.
I was actually quite surprised. I thought the last one (curse) was ok...kind've nice to see the franchise edge back into darker territory while steering, although not completely, away from the ridiculous. Cult is just about as direct a sequel as you could ask for these days - bringing the two main characters from the modern and original era together. I liked it. It was dark, moody, atmosphere wasn't bad, some interesting kills...and I much prefer the "new" concepts involved this one rather than the introduction of more outlandish characters. This one's got a bit of everything for those that have liked various aspects/styles of the series throughout. It's also nice to see Andy again, in more than just a post credits scene...and it's really shown how much of a toll the his experiences have taken on his life and who he's become. Chucky was really enjoying himself too, and his character felt a bit more like the "old" Chucky this time around. Anyways, I actually liked it quite a bit more than "curse". Not sure if they intentionally left it as incomplete as it was, it's almost like having watched half of a movie - I was really enjoying it, and when it ended when/how it did, it seemed quite abrupt and I'd really hope that they intend to follow this up with another. Check it out. It's probably the first in the franchise I've enjoyed anywhere near as much as either of the first two. |
American Psycho

I went and saw Flatliners yesterday with my uncle and brother the other day. It was an okay movie. The original was a lot better. The only thing that I loved about it was how Kiefer Sutherland made a small appearance.

Gerald's Game (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/5hjh89ky1/image.jpg Under the surface of supernatural, creepy elements or a horrifying survival scenario, Stephen King is a master class writer who often likes to create relatable characters having deep emotional experiences that people endure in their lifetime through darkest fear or a difficult past. GERALD'S GAME's central character Jessie Burlingame is also very much like that, she finds herself in a fight for survival after a planned weekend with her husband in a remote retreat accidentally takes a harrowing turn; and now she must confront & struggle with her own demons, disturbing memories & a fractured psyche to get out from that very awkward & near impossible situation. Today's one of the most promising young horror filmmakers Mike Flanagan here just gave us a superb adaptation of King's one of the most less discussed novels by hitting the right cord - providing perfect emphasis on the main character & her inner struggle like the way other great filmmakers (i.e. Darabont, Romero) with successful King adaptation did in their movies. And Carla Gugino on the lead remarkably turned it into her own show where she showcased quite a powerful performance with lasting impression. The way Flanagan captured the heart of King's story with a small but stellar cast, this is surely going to regard as one of the very few but most finest Stephen King adaptations made in recent years. >>: A |
All the Boys Love Mandy Lane - 5/10
Meh. Kind of predicatble and only 1 or 2 good kills to redeem it. |

Hmm... I thought it was a heavily dialogue driven snorefest. To each his own. |

Pygmies: Children of the Jungle (2011)
9/10 ON NETFLIX NOW If today someone told you, "sorry, turns out Pygmies were just a myth", you'd probably have to say, "Oh, really? I always assumed they were real." It's amazing that even today, in 2017 (though the film is 2011) you can see real Pygmies in Africa, living as they have for millennia. This documentary takes you there, and you can see they aren't a myth, just shorter family members still living it 'old school' in the jungle. I thought it was fascinating. The direction gives you a real "you are there" feel. You get to learn what you can, while you can, and then you have to leave. |

Flatliners (2017)
Goddamn this was bad. Full disclosure: I've never seen the original, so I can't compare...but fuck me, what an awful movie. Clichéd, afterschool special nonsense. Lame jump scares, generic set pieces and absolutely no reason to care about anything that's happening. All the characters are cardboard cutouts, none of them ever feel like real people - the cast isn't terrible, but they're fighting an uphill battle against a godawful script. Ugh. This is the worst thing I've seen in theaters in years, and I didn't even have high expectations. |

Good news is, I recommend the original Flatliners. I thought the build up was really well done (3/4ths of the film). It's really what the film is about. The conclusion was what it was... not bad or good... kinda interesting choice. Love to hear what you think of the original. I can pretty much guarantee you'd be entertained. I knew what the film was about before I saw it, so seeing the re-make probably wouldn't be a significant spoiler. |

Nerdist posted a list of horror movies streaming now (and coming soon) on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Decided I would go through the list.
First up was Never Let Me Go. I don't understand how Nerdist classified this as horror. There was nothing horror-related to it. ChronoGrl and I discussed it, and came to the conclusion that, at best, it was kinda/sorta scifi, but was really more of a drama. Second was 6 Dead Souls (which is listed on IMDB as Circle). Avoid this movie! Worst movie I've seen in a long time. I didn't even finish watching it. |
