IT
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...psfwrkjx9j.jpg I really enjoyed this. I found it as faithful as it could be to the source material as a 2 and half hour movie would allow. I was disappointed to not see more of the backstories of characters like Ben and Mike whose roles were significantly lowered but all of the actors captured the essence of the characters. Bill Skarsgard was excellent as Pennywise. A great combination of scary and disturbingly playful. I found his performance to be much more accurate to the book. I do wish they had been able to add in more of the cosmic stuff that pertains to Pennywise as someone who hasnt read the book would probably only see IT as a ancient monster. Hopefully they'll be able to touch on this more in the second one, it will make more sense to do it then anyway. The scares were great, the actors all did a great job creating this wonderful group of kids. They all really nail the characters from the novel and make you care about them and enjoy watching them together. Their bond is showcased well. I would go see this in the theater again, i really enjoyed myself and i strongly recommend seeing it. 8/10 |
DANNY SAYS (2016). When he stops talking about his sexual preferences/experiences and drug use, this auto doc of Danny Fields who worked in several music publications and with many bands is OK. Other than The Doors, most of the bands he was closely associated when were ahead of their time and while critics loved them, no public appreciation until way later; ie The MC5, The Stooges, The New York Dolls and The Ramones. ***

Dead Awake. For a moderately budgeted horror film it wasn't to bad. It had an Intresting plot based on the legend of the mare and it's role in sleep paralysis and it's execution and monster was well done.
6 in a half out of 10. |
IT 2017
I thought it was alright. Relied maybe a touch too heavily on the percussive element to the scares? Atmosphere ok. Kid actors, personally I thought the original cast did better but they were fine. I found something about the chick reminded me of Jamie Lee Curtis. The new guy didn't quite have the presence of Tim Curry but he did ok for a different version of the character. I felt like TC version seemed to enjoy toying with/tormenting his kids a bit more? All in all pretty solid. Funny in parts. Shocking in others (The Georgie thing...), and well, for me not terrifying but scary enough. HATED the new Henry Bowers personally. The Pennywise stomp/dance was awesome... Uh...7/10 |
Motivational Growth (2013)
https://s26.postimg.org/8x9c4vreh/mo...wth_poster.jpg "This is the story of Ian Folivor who is a depressed mess. He hasn't left his increasingly messy & disgusting apartment in a year, hasn't bathed in months, and hasn't had any human contact for what seems like forever. His only constant "companion" is Kent, an old cabinet-style television set that's been really the only thing keeping him going. When Kent 'dies', Ian naturally becomes distraught and decides life isn't worth living. He attempts to kill himself with homemade gas in the bathtub. He screws up and ends up hitting his head on the bathtub. When he awakens he learns that the mold growing beside his bathroom sink is talking to him (voiced by great Jeffrey Combs). The mold convinces him it knows what is best for him and he needs to obey his commands..." With its small cast and limited set up, Motivational Growth turns out to be a pretty fun, original and a great addition to the bizarre, weird or 'WTF I've just watched?!' sort of films. Ian gradually descends into a surreal world contained within the two rooms of his tiny apartment in which time, logic, and human interaction are governed by no rules except those of The Mold. Also, as made evident by Ian's rad cassette tape collection and the bizarre selections of programming on his TV set in the 90s, combined with its video game inspired 8-bit score and a selection of animated sequences, fake television shows & commercials, Motivational Growth is its own fully realized world of weird. The young actor on the lead, playing Ian did a good job & nicely carried the movie till the end. Ian serves not only as the film's main character but also as its narrator, as there are several times at the beginning when he breaks the fourth wall to give some more direct character insight to the audience. Also liked the way they handled Jeffrey Combs. Most of the time we get small cameos by horror legends and nothing lasting on film but Combs, well his voice, is in a great portion of the film and you can guess easily...he nailed it. A very inspired effort from writer-director Don Thacker on his first feature film. Overall, a good, original & well written bizarro indie that's definitely worth to check out for a change. >>: B+ |

Annabelle: Creation, 2017. 5/10 Fucking doll, it was creepy at times. Give props to the girl with the leg brace, man she was tossed around a lot. ![]() Clowntergeist, 2017. 6/10 Wow, clown movies are coming outta the woodwork. This was a clown possessed by a demon. Entertaining. https://i.imgur.com/d6HvOSTl.png https://i.imgur.com/gwLeMYs.jpg https://i.imgur.com/QmH5vTa.jpg Let Me Make You a Martyr, 2016. 8/10 This film was fucking awesome! Dark gritty slow burn crime drama. Yes Marilyn Manson is in this but doesn't have much screen time. He was great though. Character driven story which gave me warm comfort. : ) |
The Seasoning House (2012), rewatch.
Effectively brutal & quite bleak horror set during the Bosnian War, and recommended overall. ::wink:: |

I saw mother! on Friday, and I can't stop thinking about it. Perfect if you want a messed up artsy movie, and I love how bold Paramount was by giving it such a wide release. It's great that there is a controversial, challenging, original movie playing nationwide in this current movie landscape.

A Ghost Story (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/fjka80r5l/A_...ory_poster.jpg Not a spooky supernatural story and not even told in a traditional fashion, A GHOST STORY comes with a melancholy tale of love & loss that's demand your patience as a viewer for its slow burn nature & art house approach. But still this is a beautiful film that profoundly captures the grief of a ghost & tries to explore some meaning & purpose even in the emptiness our existence into the cosmic nature of life & time through a simplistic, yet poetic visual narrative. Give it a try if you are a serious viewer & like thought provoking films or won't mind to watch an art house sort of film for a change. If you can sit through that long take in the early stage of the film where Rooney Mara's character just eats a plate full of pie in deep grief & loneliness, then this will turn out a treat for you. At times, it was funny, sweet and even watching like a better version of a Terrence Malick film with lot more senses and better execution. Overall, an offbeat but an emotionally impactful gem of a movie. >>: A- |
Curve (2016)
5/10 If a human who's never seen moving pictures in their life saw Curve (2016), what would they think... but then Curve is not for ages 3 and younger, and it's not opening in makeshift screens across Papua New Guinea. And if you haven't guessed yet, the issue with Curve is it's horrifyingly too familiar a story for 2016. Young lady picks up a hitchhiker. I can't really say more without giving away the story. The few sections it has are ones you've already seen a bucketful of times. The directing, cinematography, acting, sound were competent, but the dialogue was rather rudimentary. |
IT (2017)
Firstly... I'm not a fan of the original. I mean sure it's a great watch if you want a good laugh or a great drinking game that comes with the chance of death, but it just wasn't SCARY. King is supposed to be THE KING of horror, and the original is just stupidly silly... I mean just listen to Annette O'Toole question the clown's motives! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJX0zXvrgmU There's just no chance of taking the movie seriously when one of the lines is asking why the guy trying to murder you is ''so mean''. This is going to be rare for me so pay attention... I liked the remake BETTER, than the original! Now true I didn't finish the book, but from reading what chapters I did I can tell that this was a lot more on the money. Characters were fine, gore was great, CGI was a bit over used but whatever it's a modern day horror therefore movie makers are just helpless without it, BUT. What's most important is, it was actually SCARY!! I was actually disturbed by this movie! It was great! The best was Ben running from the headless kid in the basement of the library! Damn that was unsettling! But then that leads us to our star... I can really take or leave this version of Pennywise... I don't think he was as fun as Curry, but he wasn't bad either. His signature ''run at you while having a seizure and screaming'' scare was more silly than scary, and it took away from just about every scare. Also I'll point it out before someone else points out that I didn't point it out; There was no werewolf for Richie. I'm disappointed (it was only 73% of the reason I went to go see it...). The Shallows (This review is for you, Baron!) I actually really wanted to see this in theaters originally. I'm glad now I didn't. I'll list the pros as I saw them: eyegasmic scenery, and a dead whale that was a prop and not CGI. ...That's it really. The characters were forgettable and/or shark bait, which lend to the effects that were garbage. The movie had a tendency to hold our hand through out it. *our lead looking on her phone at a picture of mom in the hospital and wearing a bald cap? The audience will never figure that out as cancer, we need to establish that in a call with her dad later where his head is in a random split screen box hovering over the fucking ocean in a comical manner, meanwhile we can actually SEE him on her phone in her hand. ::big grin:: ::roll eyes:: There was of course CGI. Again. Modern movie, it'd be naked without it. There were times it was decent, and then there were horrible CGI dolphins. *shudders* Story wise it was... fine. And had a tolerable ending (despite the side I was rooting for losing), but it's going to really bother me that we never found out the name of the fucking beach and why her driver was so dodgy about revealing it. Actually I take something back, there was one good actor/character: http://thesprout.co.uk/wp-content/up...6/10/200-7.gif Steven Seagull. |

Friday Double Bill - IT (2017) & Mother! (2017): back to back shows at the theater!
IT (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/mkbkl150p/IT17.jpg As an adaptation of Stephen King's IT – CHAPTER ONE...this turned out quite satisfactory; Andy Muschietti & his team did a pretty good job overall. The great bunch of young actors nicely shines in their respective roles though didn't get why they switched & changed few original ideas or things about characters like Mike, Ben & Bev i.e. what's the point of making Ben as the history nerd instead of Mike without revealing anything about his family or background, particularly just moving into a new town & staying over at an Aunt's house, where he's having kind of difficult time to adjust because of an annoying cousin & aunt. Personally I loved that aspect in the miniseries which I found quite relevant for many kinds around that age passing through the similar sort of problem. And the other things that kinda bugged me were Bev's missing slingshot skills and the way they gave away the little mystery around 'the Secret admirer' thing to her so early in this phase of the story. But man...that stunning young actress (Sophia Lillis) turned out quite a catch for this movie, I'm sure she'll have some damn busy days with great prospects in coming years of her career. Pleasantly surprised by Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise! Mostly because of my early impression about this portrayal of Pennywise wasn't much positive from what I've seen in the first teaser/trailer. Thought it was going to be somewhat cheesy but glad it turned out I was wrong. Enjoyed his every encounter with the kids...particularly the major selling point was his very first appearance & interaction with Georgie and he nailed that segment with his own charisma of portraying the fabulously creepy 'dancing clown' of Derry (btw, shocked to see that ended in gruesome fashion! I wasn't expecting at all to see such explicit & gory death scene of such a young victim!). Anyway, coming out from the reels (inside the garage) & the freezer (in Neibolt house) were another favorite parts and also that 3-scary doors part was a clever touch by Muschietti. But I wouldn't call them jump scares as I was expecting something like that to happen at those parts of the movie. Those were deliberate scares for me…and I never mind any sort of scares (jumpy or deliberate) as long as they are nicely done & entertaining like the way Muschietti filmed them here, loved them all. The whole kid's viewpoint treatment worked so well for a change considering how most other major horror films came out in recent years. I think they can still add few more short scenes regarding how adult community was dealing with those child missing cases more elaborately while grown-up characters recalling about the old Derry in next chapter(s). As a whole, I'd say Andy Muschietti's IT is the most entertaining horror film of 2017 so far. Excited to see who they eventually cast in the all grown-up roles for these characters. >>: A- Quote:
mother! (2017) https://s26.postimg.org/ep5mjykrt/mother_ver5.jpg ‘mother!’ can be defined as Darren Aronofsky's major, bold move into the segment of avant-garde cinema which got a pretty close tie with Horror. While I referred BLACK SWAN as his love letter to Roman Polanski's psychological horror films, now I like to consider this as his own way of homage to some other maestros of cinema…from Luis Bunuel to Stanley Kubrick, along with twisted flavors of Polanski to Micahel Haneke…the inspirations were evident in this one hell of a magnificently bizarre, odd movie. With a set of nameless characters & the limited set up of a house in the middle of nowhere, Darren Aronofsky made a total allegorical film that manifest itself into multiple layers of meanings or symbolism including religion, politics, troubled conjugal life dealing with fame & personal will etc. The thing that intrigued me most was whenever I tried to reach an idea of what's it actually about, the twists and turns of events just amazed me over & over again...like Aronofsky was saying "Why so hurry, my friend? I think there's something more that you may find interesting!" At times while the first half was somewhat like a twisted Hitchcockian thriller directed by Kubrick or Haneke, the second half gradually descends into total chaos & horror which kind of reminded me of the madness of Luis Bunuel's The Exterminating Angel (1962)! At the end, you may find an answer to get a relief for a while (like it's all about God Vs Mother Earth Vs Mankind or God & Mother Earth Vs the Mankind) but that may not be the only key to unlock all the doors of confusing & mysterious stuffs happened to that house of strange chaos, triggered by "few" suspicious guests & the baffled owners. In time, I believe this film will become a cult favorite for the ardent horror fans (at least) and can be regard as Darren Aronofsky's a matchless masterpiece which may going to inspire him to work around more closely to the horror territory in future. >>: A Pilgrimage (2017) https://s26.postimg.org/9vconm9ih/Pilgrimage-2017.jpg As it was all planned to watch IT & MOTHER in the theaters at the first day of release here, I was so excited that, I woke up quite early in the morning (though it was my only weekly holiday)...while the wife & my 3 yr. old daughter was sleeping, I just give it a watch just a hour before going to the theater!::smile:: Anyway, this is a quite grim & violent medieval Irish action-drama where Jon Bernthal as the mute lay-brother with a mysterious, dark past delivers another damn good Punisher-esque ruthless killer performance. Tom Holland as the youngest monk also showcase promises to doing some serious stuffs in coming days of his growing career. >>: B+ |

"The Hitmans Bodyguard" 8-9/10
Major Marquis Warren (The Hateful Eight) meets Wade (Deadpool) As soon as Samuel and Ryan team up they carry the entire movie with humor and chemistry, which brought back lovely memories to The Last Boyscout. Even some of the crazy action scenes were hilarious. Biggest surprise and best movie of 2017 so far, imho. "The Book of Henry" 4/10 Slow and dull with a story that seemed to be getting nowhere until the last 20 minutes, and even that last part was like a fart in the wind. |
Gaga Five Foot Two
Very interesting documentary about Lady Gaga. Honestly, I never understood all the hype about her. I didn't think she was any different from Bette Midler or Madonna back their heyday. This documentary has given me a new respect for Gaga. Seeing her in the recording studio, no filter. She has an amazing voice. And, the woman has a lot of health issues. Fibromyalgia and lupus just to name two. I probably won't ever buy her CDs, just because it's not the kind of music I like, but, like I said, I have a new-found respect for her as a person. 9/10 |
