FROZEN-2009. No, not the Disney film, but about three youngsters who get caught on a ski lift and the problems therein. A lot better than it sounds and worth seeing. For FRIDAY,THE 13TH fans, Kane Hodder makes an appearance. ***1/2

Passengers

This would've been a lot better if they had just stuck with the story they introduced in the beginning.

SPOILERS

The story of Chris Pratt's isolation slowly driving him insane until he's met with the dilemma of whether to live out the rest of his life alone or damn someone else to his situation was a great ethical question and led to an interesting story.

Then they had to ruin it by turning it into another sci-fi disaster movie that actually vilified his actions. What he did was understandable but also terrible but the last part of the movie not only said that what he did was basically okay but necessary or else everyone else would've died on the ship. It ruined what up to that point was a great story. Because of that it just ended up as an okay cliched film that will ultimately be pretty forgettable.

The only reason I didn't give it a higher score is because I was disappointed in the ending. Don't want to give it away, but, you probably know what I'm talking about.

There are two scenarios you may be talking about....not sure which one but I don't want to get into spoiler territory.

And not surprising at all....heard there is gonna be a US remake. ::shocked::

No?
How about less (male) crying and people actually fighting back and killing a zombie once in a while.

YAY!! Adding it to my queue! Been looking forward to that one for a while!

...

Saw Get Out last night. It was fucking great. Really smart, really ballsy, and at the end, pretty damn brutal too. I'm blown away that it was by a first-time director (Jordan Peele). Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams were really incredible - Actually, the whole cast was. I love seeing an incredibly angry, smart, socially conscious movie with a definite opinion and 0 fucks to give. Definitely recommended.

Yes because in real life, we'd all turn into badass zombie killing machines instead of pissing ourselves in a corner

really....didn't think there was an over abundance of "male crying". Hell...put me in that situation and I'll be balling like a baby. As far as killing zombies, I don't think most people on a commuter train would be equipped for the task. It's not like they were all packing ....also these were not your typical "Walking Dead" zombies shuffling along waiting for someone to stick em in the head with a knife.

I'm sure once this gets in the hands of a Michael Bay you will get all the shooting and blowing up male testosterone you crave.....and not a tear shed by any of the he-men.

In real life there are no zombies.
And if you care about realism, statistically speaking it wouldn't be weird that someone was either brave or crazy enough to fight them. Or at least try.

I think the (male) crying might be an Asian thing. There was also some in The Wailing.

No need to twist my words and make the assumption that I want a Michael Bay type of movie.

GODS AND MONSTERS (1998). Great film detailing the last days of James Whale, director of FRANKENSTEIN (****1/2), BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (*****), THE INVISIBLE MAN (*****) and THE OLD DARK HOUSE (***-not really too crazy about this but the wife loves it). Wonderful turns by Ian McKellan, Brendan Fraser and Lynn Redgrave (who deserved an Oscar for this, in my opinion).
While it plays a little loose with the facts, still very much seeing and would make a good companion piece to ED WOOD (1994). ****1/2

Clearly i meant if they were real. Didn't realize i needed to state that. Theres a difference between one person being brave enough to fight and absolutely everyone being macho badasses who show no emotion to monsters come to life. I think its fine to show people who are justifiably scared

Don't you think it's possible to fight back without being an emotionless macho badass?

I wasn't complaining. I was answering a question on how the movie could be improved.
Guess it's silly to expect that perhaps one person would (try) defend himself in a life threatening situation.

Thats fine. I simply disagree with you and probably did so in an antagonizing sarcastic way, which i tend to do. I simply prefer a movie that will explore the emotions behind a subject. But if you thought it wouldve been better with at least one person fighting back well thats your opinion and thats just fine

Pretty crazy movie but extremely well done, well of course the director was a meth addict and a millionaire.

It was sad that he died before he could see his film released props to those that brought his film out. I will buy it if ever put to DVD. The back story is pretty intriguing to me and I'd love to own it. I personally can re watch this again.

This was really good. Very reminiscent of Alien just without the claustrophobic fear but the element of protecting Earth from the creature was a nice touch. The action was good, it was pretty creepy, the creature felt like a genuine threat and i loved the ending.

I had given up on M. Night after the abysmal The Visit but this is a true return to form for him. This feels like one of his older movies. The story is great and keeps you guessing the whole time and waiting for whats going to happen next and James McAvoy does an amazing job portraying the different personalities. The very last part of this movie should shock you as M. Nights oft ridiculed trademark is used excellently here.

As for how DID is portrayed in the movie...

SPOILERS NOT JUST FOR THE DID PORTRAYAL BUT THE ENDING OF THE MOVIE AS WELL

Some people might take offense to the portrayal of a person with Dissociate Identity Disorder (DID) as a violent psychopath but the only personality that is actually violent is The Beast who we find out in the end of the movie is actually a supervillain in the realm of Unbreakable which makes it more of a supernatural thing then a realistic approach to the condition.

Shin Godzilla

Finally got a chance to see this and it's excellent. I think a lot of people aren't going to like this. Its slow and focuses a lot of the Japanese government but much like the original, which was an allegory on japans fears of the nuclear bomb in the wake of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this movie uses this in the wake of the earthquake in 2011 and the governments fears of another similar incident.

Godzilla is shown at it's most powerful and terrifying portrayed less as a destructive monster and more as a malevolent God and specific scenes of its destruction are amazing.

The story is great and builds real tension and a real feel of how todays Japan would handle and deal with Godzilla attacking. The movie doesn't shy away from stating that Godzilla does cause massive amounts of death and is seen as a real threat. It's one of the best Godzilla movies ever made and all Godzilla fans should see it.

Just don't bother if you're looking for monster fights or a similar movie to Legendarys 2014 film which was pretty mediocre in my opinion

AMERICAN BACKWOODS:SLEW HAMPSHIRE (2013). Independent film shot in New Hampshire with very good photography and production values despite the low budget. Four College age friends take one last road trip and SPOILERS INVOLVED>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
quickly get up shit creek without a paddle as they not only encounter sadistic kidnapping rednecks, also some Beserkers in the woods. I enjoy it when a film has a sense of unease, with I feel shows talent and there is a great example of this when our guys get a sense of what kind of predicament they are in. Quickly descends into a lot of Gay Male Rape/Torture and pretty violent scenes. Flood Reed who did all the primary things for the flick with some acting also shows promise, but the rape aspect takes over too much, almost being rubbed in your face. **1/2

ferretchucker 03-28-2017 04:22 PM

Not perfect by any means, but one of the more inspired creature features to come out of the west in a long time. There's a particularly fantastic sequence starting with a shock and ending with a deep gulp that had me totally on edge.

The creature in particular is fantastically designed. Less teeth and fangs, more grab and crush. I genuinely feared this thing throughout the whole film - a rare feat these days.

SPOILER

In the movie its stated that Godzilla could continue to evolve by shrinking or even growing wings. It's implied by the things growing out of it's tail that had they not stopped Godzilla, mini humanoid versions of Godzilla would've begun sprouting and infesting the planet. A pretty cool change of direction in my opinion.

The Bye Bye Man

Well this was a mess.

It started off well. A really good opening, a nice establishment of characters and a few creepy moments. But unfortunately the characters became insufferable, the dialogue is terrible, the acting is awful, the general direction of the movie is weird, nonsensical and at other times silly. This would've been better if they went with a creepy demon type character hunting down whoever utters his name instead it made them go crazy which honestly is just a really tired trope. Its especially bad here when the movie is riddled with cliches and does nothing to add to the genre or even just present things in a different way. Avoid
