Right on, Elvis. You and I seem to be right on the same page when it comes to 60s-70s stuff.

You're absolutely right when you say "criminally underrated".
Just like the Monks, actually. Both bands have hugely influenced rock music, but most people (rock musicians included) will never realize their contribution.
It's sad.

nothing new, just a classic album from the only psychobilly band that matters. I've been looking for the new cd, but I might have to get it from amazon.

picked up a few used CDs ..

one of them is the soundtrack to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - it has some fun tunes on it (esp. Jungle Love)

also - a cd which is a tribute to the music of Tim and Neil Finn .. all done by women.

a lot of it is that samey acoustic dull stuff of the more obscure songs - but there is a great version of 'six months in a leaky boat' done by someone with a really cool voice.

6 months... is one of my all time favorite songs..

Oh man, Norton comps are the greatest.

Speaking of great compilation albums, one I think you might really dig is called Shakin' Fit!:

http://content.answers.com/main/cont...69487jew3q.jpg

It's a bunch of old dirty, energetic rock 'n roll/R&B/soul dance songs. It's out of print now, but it's not that hard to find online for download if you're interested. I highly recommend it.

-------------------------------------

So I've never really gotten into metal of any sort (no particular reason; I think mainly just lack of exposure), but a friend of mine gave me some newer metal albums to check out:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4wIKtzXV_z.../s320/4239.jpg

Celtic Frost- Monotheist

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BlmugiSt4o...t%27s+bane.jpg

Dissection- Storm of the Light's Bane

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3mknrsGeA0...-2008-berc.jpg

Darkthrone- Dark Thrones and Black Flags

This is the only one I've listened to so far, but I was really taken aback by its strong punk roots (before I had even seen the album title, I thought "Wow, this reminds me of Black Flag more than anything.").

---------------------------------------------

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_K9hgp9zqEm...dtroducing.jpg

DJ Shadow- Endtroducing....

Also been spinning this quite a bit lately, as I recently bought it on vinyl. All I can say is that vinyl is the way this album was meant to be heard. (MissMacabre, you definitely should check out the LP if you don't have it already).

Elvis_Christ 08-12-2009 08:55 PM

That Darkthrone album is amazing one of the best metal albums I've heard in years!

Love that CF album too it was stuck in my player for quite sometime.... love the really big crushing sound of it.

I'll have a hunt for that comp and let you know what I think.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to give it a few more listens.
I'm looking forward to checking out the other two.

And I'd love to hear what you think of that Shakin' Fit comp.

Elvis_Christ 08-15-2009 07:49 PM

Been rockin' Carcass for the first time in ages. Forgot how cool a lot of this shit is...

http://www.goetiametal.com/classics/..._heartwork.jpg

Heartwork sounds a bit dated these days. Its got that shitty melodic death metal buzz going that has just been done to death over the last 5 or 6 years. Still miles ahead of the bands that play that style these days.

Very much so. A buddy of mine has been suggesting those guys for ages, but his recommendations are pretty hit-or-miss - glad you mentioned 'em too, probably wouldn't have checked it out otherwise.

You listen to Sex Mob at all man? I've also been listening to a live album they did with John Medeski - very cool stuff, really offbeat and funky.

I've never listened to them, but I'll for sure check them out. Especially this album they did with Medeski.

Great stuff. In my opinion psychedelia doesn't get better than the Zombies and the Turtles (insipid lyrics, but damned if they can't sing and play).

urgeok2 08-27-2009 01:53 PM

the turtles were ahead of their time ..

the byrds are pretty cool too .. and the blues magoos

Elvis_Christ 08-31-2009 06:44 PM

I'd be keen to check out some shows @ ABC No Rio in NY. Shit looked crazy from some of the Youtube footage I've seen.
