The wife and I are naked around our kids quite often. And there's nothing remotely sexual about it. It's sort of a locker room, vibe. If my kids are around when we're getting dressed or hopping into the shower, they see us nude.

It becomes a big deal to the kids when it is hidden, made into something secret or dirty.

I agree, the reasoning behind it is VERy important. if no attention is ever brought to it, then it isnt anythign to be worried about.

i have to admit, even at her current age, I am a bit prudish around my daughter about my dress... I'm just not comfortable not having clothes on around a little girl. i gues son some level, that is healthy....

yeah, I'm shaking my head here:D - my consolation is that I'm sure I'm taking this whole open sexuality thing to a level that would offend you to the core:)

Phalanx 11-03-2006 11:16 AM

Yeah, speaking for Australia...we're pretty much ok with tits here....As long as they're not the kind that grows 'round under a whale womans armpits, as long as they can be used er...while-ishly, they're acceptable viewing.
Wouldn't NOT show a kid a film just on account of tits, unless it were pornographic or something.

i never had any problem with it if dealt with in a constructive, mature and honest fashion.

(jesus christ i sure hope you arent using my disgust of big load head as a benchmark in your judgement !!

I do recall you getting upset with me for allowing my children to view "explicit" material.

But if I am incorrect, I apologize sir.

He did, sort of. It was more geared towards violence, if i recall correctly, though.

i may have ... i cant remember how 'explicit' you were talking about or the extent of how upset i appeared ?

.. you're obviously someone who spends a lot of time explaining things in detail to your kids .. only you and they will know if you made the right choices later on ...
i have been frustrated in the past with people that let their kids watch stuff indiscriminately and without guidence - and they become desensitized little shits with no sense of reality vs fantasy..

i'll tell you one thing - coming from a pair of parents who didnt care to have children and werent afraid to hide it ... raising kids - properly - is THE most rewarding but also most difficult undertaking you could ever engage in ..(as you well know)

fuck its hard as hell to anticipate what the right or wrong thing to do is every time..
i find the people who make it look easy are the people who dont care - they let their kids run wild - they become everyone elses problem.

from my upbringing i am acutely aware that anything said or done could be a trigger for something later on in my kids life - his hopes, fears, biases ...
there is so much responsibility involved it can crush you at times.

but the reward of the little bugger hugging you and wanting to be with you all the time is worth all the work.

stinking_dylan 11-03-2006 11:48 AM

I find the violence v nudity thing even more wierd when it applies to computer games. It's fine for kids to play being murderers, but seeing a breast gets the censors hoping mad.

I'm british by the way, so girls, if you feel the need to show me your tits, it's cool.

Just so you know.:p

The best parts of every day: Getting Lily out of bed and seeing her face light up the second i walk in the room, and getting home from work at the endof the day and seeing her face light up the second i walk in the room.

I think my wife said it best: You can tell i love having my daughter. I knew for thelongest time i wanted a kid,a nd I wanted a daughter. not sure why, i just have always had an affinity for girls (for a long time as a kid i had more girl freinds than boy friends, my first best friend was a girl.. okay, i know why now, moving on..)

its amazing how proud of yourself you get when you realize what you kid is doing.

Shouldn't we hide parts of our body if for nothing else to keep them as objects of desire? If you see breasts everyday after a while, probably a long while, they won't be as much of a turn on. Mystery is a wonderful thing, a woman in lingerie can be just as if not more exciting than a naked woman in my opinion. Nudity isn't bad but I think the lack of it everywhere in our culture keeps it more exciting. Plus, nudity is connected with desire is it not? It's normal for a man or woman to desire seeing a naked man or woman based on their sexual preferance. It is not natural to want or need to hurt or kill other people. Maybe people think it's safe to offer up gratuitous amounts of something people don't crave rather than let them overindulge their real thirst. And with my second edit, What about Japan? They allow nudity but pubic hair is off limits. Odd. Different cultures and country have different taboos and I think that's good, keeps us different and lets us search out different things we like from different places. As long as it's not made illegal I'm fine with the way it's viewed. The thing that really pisses me off is ratings but that's another story. (Grand Theft Auto is unplayable because of sex and violence but go ahead and bring your kids to see Terminator 2 or let them rent Texas Chainsaw Massacre). On an almost but not quite semi-related note I saw an interview with Lucy Lu (sp) where she was talking about how the Chinese are enticed by the neck and wrists and really found that interesting.

Covering them makes them objects of desire.

Yeah, I love breasts - they're fun, but their purpose is to nurture and, as such, are a symbol of motherhood and fertility - nothing to be considered dirty.

The reason men (and women) find this attractive (along with curvy hips and a kind nature) is hard wired into our reptilian brain. It's about findig a good mate for the propogation of the species.

The same reason women (and men) look for a lean, muscularar physique in a man - a good hunter/provider. Yes, we've grown beyond these roles as a species, but the desire in us rather heavily programmed - and reinforced by the media.

Yes, so let's keep them covered sometimes, don't lose the mystery. As far as stereotypes being reinforced by the media... not with you %100 percent there. Paris Hilton and woman like her are toted as beautiful and desirable constantly but look as if they couldn't survive giving birth.

I'm with you on that. Titilation is great. Temptation is great.

Paris Hilton is a disgusting piece of trash with really bad skin who appeals to the men of the world who want "a hole" and not a women.

I'll agree that the media is skewing away from the true feminine form and toward something much more androgenous, but that's a simple cultural anomaly - possibly brought on by global over-population?

urgeok 11-03-2006 04:32 PM

there are a lot of places where women arent covering their breasts that still manage to attract men with their womanly wiles ..

i always thought the 'lets not lose the titillation' a bit of a copout..

god i LOOOOOOOVE womens legs ... they often dont cover them .. and i still am titillated by them after many years...

poof goes the theory !

Roderick Usher 11-03-2006 04:34 PM

No, because woman's legs are still often covered and you didn't grow up with beatuiful long legs around you all the time. I'm sure if you were born into a family of nudists you wouldn't find the breasts or legs particularly exciting.

newb 11-03-2006 04:52 PM

HELL...truth be known, most men would think a girl in a burka is sexy.

HAHAHA...That's exactly what I was thinking when I read that, too :D

Seriously though...I'd much rather have sex, than watch other people have sex...That would be very boring and pointless to me...I just don't understand that...

I think one of my friends said it best...He (Myke) said, "Watching porn is like watching a nature show about the mating habits of scuzzy people...Nature shows are boring, especially if you're already completely familiar with the subject matter...It's just the same thing over and over again...You know exactly what's going to happen...It's nothing you haven't seen before...What's the point?"

But he feels the same way I do about sports and wrestling, too...Would much rather play or wrestle and actually DO something, than just sit on our asses and watch other people do it...

urgeok 11-04-2006 05:43 AM

i think there is a time and place for porn if you're into that at all ..

i sure enjoyed it as a younger guy - i'm occasionally exposed to it now and then and although i dont seek it out - i dont poo-poo it either.

i love seeing beautiful naked women ... if they're having sex - yahoo ..

if its 2 women having sex : yaaaa hoooo !!!!:D

several gals in my past thought it was fun for foreplay too :)

ultimately - as i got older i found it was far more fun to make it than watch it ;)

alkytrio666 11-04-2006 07:25 AM

Being a kid, my parents still had things to say about my movie watching not too long ago.

My mom felt the exact opposite of the way most of America does...she didn't care about me seeing nudity, but she hated when I'd watch some gritty, violent flick.

Despare 11-04-2006 08:05 AM

It's such a melting pot here. I'm sure if you go down south or along the bible belt you'll find strong opposers to nudity but honestly, not many people I know have a problem with it. Nudity in movies is just there, nobody knocks it or is uncomfortable with it. It's more the people who censor the movies than it is those of us who watch it. I think the only time I had anybody say a scene made them uncomfortable was when we watched History of Violence, the stair scene to be exact and that wasn't because of the nudity really.

Oh, and I love to play AND watch sports, you can't really play football in Dec. here at 10PM but you can watch it.

.

i've seen oral sex - performed on women in movies a couple of times now.
when i see it the second time i start to worry that it'll become a trend .. then it loses its value.

i guess they found its a hot sex scene they can show because you really cant see anything - the way you could if it was being done to a man..

i predict that we'll be seeing it in more films in the future.

i picture the actor going "numanumanumanumanumanumanum" and the acrtess trying not to laugh

Actually one of the girls I saw it with was more disturbed by how rough and almost rape like it was. Pretty intense scene, I guess the actress had bruises for weeks, I thought it was very wll done. Anyway, I think I've said all I want to about the subject, American has the wrong people censoring things really. Both political parties constantly attack music, movies, and videogames which is odd because really they're both corrupt. Anyway, good topic.
