Sometimes the Come Back...Again
*Clearly marked minor Spoiler near the end* One thing can be said for Stephen King movies, whether he had a direct hand in them or not. They almost always have at least one or two really good characters, and the plot is always interesting. This film was no exception, and in fact was better than the first film, despite some incompetent cops and occasionally idiotic villains. Alexis Arquette made a great leader of the villains, though at times he seemed to be doing a bit of a Jerry Seinfeld impression. Micheal Gross was also very good as the typical troubled father. To be honest, the only part of the cast that wasn't up to par was Hillary Swank. If you told me in '96 that she would win an Oscar in less than a decade, I would have laughed in your face. As good as she may be now, she was awful in this film! Her lines were monotone, her facial expressions were flat, just and overall bad job. Up until the ending the plot moved along at a good pace, very interesting and enjoyable. The ending on the other hand seemed to drag on forever! I wont spoil it, but suffice to say it could have been a lot shorter. Last but certainly not least: The gore. *Herein lie the minor spoilers that I mentioned, so avert your eyes if you want. Nothing major though.* The deaths were all very well done and gory, though I wish we would have seen more of the lawnmower scene. The death by tarot cards was very cool however, and is quite possibly the best part of the film. Overall, I recommend at least renting the double sided DVD with this and it's predecessor. Two very enjoyable films, though this is slightly better. 8/10 |

First time seeing the whole thing and it was a long time coming. I loved this one, easy to see why other people like it so much. |

I picked this up today as part of a 2/$5 deal, so needless to say I wasn't expecting much. To be honest it didn't exactly deliver a whole lot, but it was certainly better than I was expecting. Takes a long while for the plot to get up ad running, the first 25 minutes or so of the film drag on terribly. This time does serve to introduce the characters, though only one of them is really worth introducing. David Keith's character, Mason Rand, was a decent character who had some very funny lines, but the rest were forgettable and bland. The film picks up as we learn more and more about Torus, the mysterious object that rose from the ground. The CGI effects looked about as good as can be expected, which is a kinder way of saying they sucked. I guess that's a bit harsh, but the majority of the CGI looked very, very cheap. The only exception being the...er...beings in the Torus. Though it ended fairly abruptly, I think the ending was the best part of the film. Leaves you thinking, and I know that I'll be thinking about it well into next week. Overall this is better than a lot of modern day "B" grade sci-fi, but still isn't that great. Worth picking up if it's cheap. 6/10 |

Alky...I loved the jacket, you down with it?
I watched Unleashed, for the second time. I think I enjoyed it even more this time around. Solid but not overly complex characters, nice back story...good storyline flow. I was also very impressed by the musical score, all done by massive attack, it's close to a perfect score IMO....so well suited in every scene. Action scenes...if you liked the stuff in romeo must die, kill bill, the transporter...throw that all together with some John Wu, and this is what you get. Some of the most hardcore, CRAZY chunky fight scenes and amazing stunts I've ever seen Jet Li perform in film...another area of the film that's damn near perfect. It's a little sad, scary and brutal at times, overall a great watch. I'd highly reccomend it. |

28 Days Later, which is overpraised rubbish.
Using the survivors-meet-up-and-go-shopping state of affairs, it held no surprises and was blighted by the trendy quickfire edits and CGI that plague modern movies of this ilk. Danny Boyle will never come close to the heights he reached with Trainspotting. |
City of the Living Dead
Some good gore but pretty ho-hum throughout. I liked it but I think I had higher expectations. |
Some nice foggy amosphere in COTLD, and it's loaded with good bits - the maggot shower (witness the real revulsion of the actors), the head-scrunching, intestine-puking and infamous head-drilling, and a very cool slow soundtrack to boot.

Shallow Grave is my favorite of the bunch.. it is a funny thing how the uk folks are so much harder on their own films and praise american films we dont like as much ... and vise versa happens as well. |

There's an irritating trend of selling British films (at home and abroad) through stereotyping, hence bright red phone boxes and London buses, "evenin' all!" flatfooted bobbies on the beat, gor-blimey exaggirated accents and an overall sense of downright falseness... guess this is why Hollywood is denounced as such a fake, fantasy-land by down-to-earth Americans.
But it's understandable why some British films are a hit over the water, since even if our quaint humour isn't present :D Yanks are probably just pleased to see a production without the usual big and booming Tinseltown aura around it. |

thats a large part of it .. also ... it's just ...different.. not just anti slick american ... it's something that just feels, smells, tastes different .. and hell yeah - we're starved for that .. well - some of north americans are. as far as the british cliches go ... I would imagine that most of the north americans who've never been there and who have only been exposed to the UK via films and telly :p have no idea that these things are cliche at all ! cor ! |
Exactly - you probably think we're all stammering oafs like Hugh Grant.
Just look at the damage Helex Baxendale did for us when she appeared in Friends, all posh, prim and frumpy. English birds aren't like that... at least none of mine are. :) |

Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Let me start off by saying that I am certainly not a "trekkie", and after watching this I think "trekkies" may be just a bit odd in the head. As a child I was a rabid fan of Next Generation, however this is my "first contact" with Star Trek in at least 7-8 years. Though this film certainly had some very good moments, I think you'd have to be a fan to truly enjoy it. The plot plods along at a snails pace, repeating itself and making me think the director wanted to cut as little as possible. Every scene went on much, much too long in my opinion, Id say the film could have been 45 minutes shorter and still just as good. With a few exceptions, the actors were awful. Every stereotype about Shatner is completely true, and I found myself in hysterics after some of his totally monotone delivery. His "acting" aside, his character just plain wasn't likable. From the first few minutes it convinces you not to like him as he acts like a total jerk, for lack of a better term. There was one good character though whom I wish would have been used more: Dr "Bones" McCoy. His dry and sarcastic attitude was hilarious and a breath of fresh air amongst a cast that takes themselves far to seriously. One thing that it did have going for it were the effects. As much as I disliked this film, I cant think of a single bad thing to say about the effects; they were phenomenal! Too bad it didn't have much else going for it... Overall, if you're not a big "trekkie", Id avoid this like the plague. If you are a "trekkie"...I suppose you must not like this review much, eh? 4.5/10 |
I thought MOST of the star trek films were pretty shithouse, and the first one was VERY slow and boring.
I only really liked #2, and the um...the one with the klingons (one of the last of the original crew movies), and generations. The two after generations were "ok", but the last one was pretty damn pathetic. |

Star Trek IV - the voyage home is the highlight of the series.
the one Shatner directed - # V is by far the worst. they say that the even numbered films in the series are better .,.. i myself really like the 1st one. |

The Gate
*Minor Spoilers* This sat on my shelf for months, just waiting for a day where I had absolutely nothing better to do. Today was that day, and I was actually really surprised. What other movie has miniature demons, Lovecraft references, zombie construction workers, dead dogs, and really bad 80's haircuts? This has it all! The acting obviously left a lot to be desired, but what can you expect from a cast of kids? The plot, though it took awhile to get to the good stuff, was very interesting and, though cheesy in many places, kept my interest until the very end. The effects were very cool, the "huge" demon at the end looked great! The film's main downfall was the ending. I suppose a movie like this needs an upbeat ending, but I think it would have been a lot better if it ended 5-10 minutes earlier. Oh well, this was still a surprisingly enjoyable film, I definitely recommend picking it up, it's usually in a bargain bin somewhere... 7.5/10 |

Why would I even watch this? It was a double feature on my Jigsaw DVD, which is quite possible the worst movie ever made. However I was bored and wanted to watch something new, so I grabbed this off the shelf. I've got to admit that it was better than Jigsaw, but that isn't saying much. The basic concept was the only thing the movie had going for it, but they ran it into the ground. 6 people find themselves part of an ancient ritual in which 3 of them must kill and 3 of them must die. If handled well, it could have been a decent plot. Of course being a Full Moon picture, it was not handled well by any stretch of the imagination. When a movie has to have a psychic, it bothers me. It's rarely more than a cheap way to get out of explaining parts of the plot. What does this movie do? The whole friggin' cast is psychic! No point explaining how or why they're at the cabin, they're just psychic and got called by some kind of force. The actors, like in any Full Moon flick, give some of the worst performances ever seen in front of a camera. Their characters are so poorly written they cant even decide on what they think is going on from one minute to the next. The random dream sequence made no sense, and if I'm not mistake it stole footage from various other films. The "mosters" looked like they were rejected from the latest Puppet Master sequel, and if you happen to be epileptic you might just get a seizure from the terrible editing and strobe lights. Overall, this is pure garbage. Not as bad as Jigsaw, but horrible none-the-less. Avoid if you value your time. 3/10 |
NOES 3
And someone thought this was the BEST??? 2/10 |
Dream Warriors is a riot, and way better than the later entries in the series (included Wes's own self indulgance episode).
The last decent entry in NOES, save for some cool FX in part 4. |
