The Last Winter (2006)
B/C
Icy/snowy thriller with a tiny bit of horror.
It's slow, the story was kinda weak but the movie wasn't boring.
Misleading poster though. And the underlying message was a bit pushy.
BUT... it's a movie set in icy plains. Slim pickings when it comes to those.

BRIDESMAIDS (2011). Wife picked this out and although not great by any means, there were some decent laughs. **1/2

One of my favorite female comedies.

The ending is the only thing I remember from The Last Winter. That was pretty cool. Very short but cool.

The Night Before (2015)
B
Nice Christmas comedy with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and a lot of other familar faces including Michael Shannon. Until now I never realised he sounds a lot like Steven Wright.

9/10, just as good the second time. That chick is messed up in the head.

Watched on HBO NOW Roku, which I (and my team) built. ::smile::

Dust Devil (1992) the final cut
Thumb resize.
B+
Mystical horror-thriller about a demon roaming the African outback hunting for lost souls.

This wasn't that great but I really liked it.
Thought it was pretty cool and original.

Cabin Fever (2016)
Another pointless, shitty remake.
I don't remember a lot from the original, I do remember it wasn't as bad as this.

Spoilers in white:
-The trailer dude that got infected in the beginning survived almost 24hours after losing a few pints of blood and being set on fire. Then he jumps out of the lake like Jason. Also he's the butcher lady's cousin. Why wouldn't he go there for help?
-The first dog that got sick died at his owner's place next to his bowl. Second dog that got sick started roaming around and acted like he had rabies too.
-The brunette's eyebrows. Come on, really? It's 2016 for feck's sake.
-What happened to the weird weed dude? If he got sick, I assume he would go to the other for help.
-Nearly dead girl asks guy to kill her. All a sudden the gun safety's on.
Tries to kill her with a shovel, fails miserably, can't do it again with the shovel but has no problem setting her on fire.
-I could be wrong but I think they were more subtle in the original about the cause of the ilness. Movie starts, dog's waterbowl, several scenes with a glass or glasses of water, usually accompanied by a close up of the glass(es), shots of pipes running through the house, etc etc. WE GET IT! IT'S IN THE WATER! Or isn't it?
-The ending: the kid that bit a guy in the beginning, bites another guy towards the end. Before he bit, he says "Pancakes!", which is the name of the first dog aka patient zero in this film.So is it the kid or the water? Who cares?
This movie sucked.

First Martyrs and now this. Is 2016 the year of pointless remakes?

Baron Von Marlon 02-12-2016 07:38 PM

Every year is the year of pointless remakes.

favabeans 02-12-2016 11:33 PM

House of Wax (2005)

It was ok - entertaining, but not necessarily a good movie. 5.5/10

Seen Black Mountain Side yet? Same kind of story.

horcrux2007 02-13-2016 07:49 AM

Eh true but those two seem particularly abysmal.

Angra 02-13-2016 07:54 AM

They are not for everyone.

horcrux2007 02-13-2016 07:58 AM

That was meant for Baron's comment about how every year is the year of pointless remakes. I forgot to quote his post

Shame on you.

Giganticface 02-13-2016 08:43 AM

I didn't think the Martyrs remake was abysmal -- it was actually not a bad film -- but it just didn't seem necessary. If you go into it bracing yourself for the endurance test that the original was, you'll walk out disappointed, saying, "Well that was too easy." If it were possible to approach the film without comparing it to the original (which is ludicrous, given how notorious the original is, and recently it was released), it's still a good story, well executed, beautifully filmed, great soundtrack, and despite the lack of gore, the tension is still there. Also, one big change they made to the story allows the personal bond between the main characters to be more deeply explored. Still though, it's hard to imagine many people liking it much, except maybe people who have never seen, and know nothing about, the original.

Cabin Fever, on the other hand, from what I've read, I'm expecting to completely waste 90 minutes of my life on that one.

Creed (2015)
B/C
Not bad but it's no Rocky.

Been looking forward to that one ever since I first read about it. I found a webrip about a week ago but it's without subtitles. I have no problem understanding but it takes a little too much effort to really enjoy a movie. Especially when the focus is on the story and the dialogue.

You seen it yet? And no spoilers ;)

I liked it. The acting is pretty good. Although, it lacked that climactic ending The Last Winter had.

Good spoiler. ::big grin::

This surely is one of those why-the-fuck remakes. Almost exactly the same story as the original but with far worse actors.

I do have 1 positive thing to say about this remake tho. The score was amazing and deserved to be in a much, much better movie.

horcrux2007 02-13-2016 10:11 AM

I might have to watch them to see if they are truly that bad. Although I still need to watch the original Martyrs.

Are there more movies you watch that you don't mention here? =)

The score was solid but out of place. There were a couple of moments when things weren't tense, but the score was.

The original Martyrs is overrated. It's well made, but in the end it's just a torture flick with some wannabe fancy story.

True. It would've fitted much better in movies such as "Cliffhanger" and even "The Revenant".

There's plenty more to it than that, but it is a very divisive film.

"Southbound" 8/10

A very good and highly entertaining horror anthology that certainly isn't pg-13.

Best horror flick of 2016 so far. But the year is still young.

Not really. Spoilers in white.
"The biggest part of the movie is about the girl getting beaten and tortured. The purpose behind it doesn't change that."
