Slither -- 10/10; Its anniversary is tomorrow.

Cody's Dreams -- 5.5/10; The short that spawned the upcoming "Before I Wake", but without the obnoxious CGI butterflies.

Gears-of-Warren 03-30-2015 01:02 AM

I watched Insidious Chapter 2 today to refresh my tired brain before immersing myself in everything related to the next Chapter. wWe should have very high hopes for something special from the writer/director Whannel.

I didn't find that one scary. I wanted to like it so bad too.

Nightcrawler (2014)

Nightcrawler is an exciting and gritty crime-thriller movie that explores the depths of LA crime-journalism at its most gruesome. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom who films crime scenes and sells them to a local news station, while blurring the lines between observer and participant. The movie works best as a character study of Lou, showing how he can manipulate people into helping him in this dangerous profession and the lengths he will go to sell the video to the news. It's dark, intelligent, and violent while still being able to engage and entertain the audience.

8/10

Jake is a great actor and know s how to take his special creepiness to the next level. I would also give it an 8.

"Dead Rising: Watchtower" 7/10

A nice homage to the games weapon wise, but I would've liked it to be much more "Evil Dead 2"-crazy (like the beginning. And the Frank West character) and prefered a story that took place in a giant mall.

Still a pretty good zombie flick with a budget.

"Get Hard" 6/10

The whole movie was like the first half of "Big Stan". A rich guy hires someone to teach him how to survive jail, all leading up to nothing. Will Ferrell had his moments but Kevin Hart just isn't funny.

Spring (2014)
http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...14,317_AL_.jpg

Really satisfying indie horror. Romance-on-horror; along the lines of Let the Right One In, but a little sweeter and more playful. Bizarro love(craft) story. Solid recommendation.

Dead Silence was/is great. It's no wonder because Whannel was involved in its creation. I haven't seen the other two, but they sound like porn titles.

Snowtown. 9/10

Rarely interested in serial killers. Wasn't particularly interested in this one. I had forgotten why I put it on my list. Anyway, amazing acting. Well shot. No 'pretty' hollywood people. The way the film was organized, unless you know what its about beforehand, is a bit confusing, but in a good way. You begin to put things together, and I also remembered what the film was based on half way through. Really well done. Particularly because its not a horror or torture porn film. 9/10

" A Million Ways To Die In The West" (2014)
-Seth McFarland
Plot: IMDB
As a cowardly farmer begins to fall for the mysterious new woman in town, he must put his new-found courage to the test when her husband, a notorious gun-slinger, announces his arrival.

Phantom's Review: Crude, foul mouthed and very R rated. It's not a bad movie, it has a couple of very funny moments but almost all of the jokes deal with sex, and bowel movements and that gets old after awhile. My one bit of praise for the film is, it's beautifully filmed. I don't know if director Seth McFarland is a western fan or he went out and watched all of John Ford's movies, but either way he got the look of the film right.

Really unfortunate to see all these cool-looking art house films get mediocre scores from the roshiq. Makes me wonder if there are any good smaller-budget horror films out nowadays.

Cinderella (2015)

I'll be honest; I love the original CInderella. It's one of my favorite Disney movies, so I was a little apprehensive of seeing a live-action remake after seeing what they did to Maleficent. From someone who loves the original story so much, they did an excellent job updating it. The new Cinderella is a fresh and witty remake on a classic movie that doesn't try to make any subversive twists or attempt to be some fantasy action flick. The story itself is largely the same, although with a little more emphasis on the stepmother and stepsisters, which makes this movie a very traditional fairy tale while still adding a new layer to the story. There's a lot to like in the new Cinderella, especially if you know and love the original.

Cosmopolis. 4/10. Cronenberg is amazing, but this film was not. Its inspired by/based on a book. Which I could tell in the sense that the dialogue is interesting, but its too disjointed as presented in the movie. The characters not really characters at all, just meat with a voice. I definitely want to read the book now, but the movie...I could not finish.
