BONNIE'S KIDS (1973)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> > >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Quite cheesy and sleazy Drive-In Faire, which of course makes it worth seeing. Two sisters (Robin Mattson, later on GENERAL HOSPITAL) and lovely::love::::love:: Tiffany Bolling (KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS) are two sisters who kill their drunken, abusive Stepfather and head to their deceased Mother's (The "Bonnie" of the title) brother to start over and of course, Evil thoughts and Evil doings begin to occur. Have heard that Tarantino is a big fan of this (these kinds of films, generally) and was reading reviews on IMDB and after watching a second time how Bonnie, in this film, is similar to Bonnie in PULP FICTION-You hear a lot about her, but never see her (at least not a face in PF) and like PF, this has two traveling Hit Men traveling around, talking banalities and eating. *** |

THREADS (1984)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> > >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Low budget, but terrifying look of Nuclear attack and the awful aftermath...being killed in the blast would be preferable to the life You would have if You managed to survive. Due to a situation in The Middle East (Sound familiar?), the USA and The USSR begin to butt heads and play the ultimate game of Chicken with Sheffield England truly right in the middle, in every sense of the word. Truly hard hitting and much better than TESTAMENT and THE DAY AFTER, this was probably heady stuff around the release date with all the Hard liners in Political office. Very recommended. ***** |

Aliens
Just came across a nice Alien-box. Turns out this has both the theatrical release and the special edition of Aliens. If you look at Alien, it had more in common with the slasher films and the cabin in the woods films than with action. Compared to the first one, this is more of a straight up action film, with all the banter between the soldiers and the shooting. And it's an eighties action flick, so the bad guy is a real slimeball, we have a to have a cute kid in there (thank you, mister Spielberg) and the main characters get a oneliner. That said, it does its job and delivers on all the things you would expect from a similar flick. The knife scene with Lance Henriksen is adrenaline. Burke gets his comeuppance in a very satisfying manner. The fight between the soldiers and the aliens is exciting, albeit onesided and the scene near the end with the Queen and Ripley saving Newt had me on the edge of my seat. To make a comparison between Alien and Aliens in terms of better or improvement is understandable, but misses the point. If anything, both are not so much competitive (even though this one does perfect the "go big or go home" logic) as they are complementary. They complement each other, while both telling their own story and having their own merits. And both are still worth seeing. |

Try to give it a look...watched again this weekend and still effective. THE HITCHER (1986). Wasn't really impressed with this back in the theaters back in the day and time hasn't been kind to it. Rutgar Hauer is still way creepy, but plot is too thin for almost two hours and might have been more effective in an anthology film. Also, C Thomas Howell is SUCH a goof that You wish Rutgar would stop playing games and get it done. After awhile, it seemed the main point of the film is showing numerous ways of destroying means of transport. ** |

BEYOND ATLANTIS (1973). Possibly the most wholesome (meaning no excessive violence or Female nudity) Filipino 70's film. Regular Vic Diaz gets pearls for services and a group of somewhat shady characters want to get in on the spoils and try to avoid the angering the natives too much-check out the eyes!
Stunning underwater photography helps the plot-almost like TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE with how the characters change. Decent cast with Patrick Wayne, John Ashley and Sid Haig, who steals the film with a great line about what is "Sacred" to him. Could have been better, but not too bad. **1/2 |
An American Werewolf in London
Holy crap, this just seems to get better with every rewatch. The film in itself stands rock solid. The storytelling, the performances, the build up,... all top notch. A few things deserve a separate mention, though. First of all, the special effects. There is of course the infamous transformation scene that has aged well. Not to mention the portrayal of the wolf, making it as scary as possible. Or the progressively worse state that Jack is in. Then, there is the humor. The scene with David waking up in the zoo is hilarious. Jack keeps wisecracking, even in the state he is in near the end. Then again, what else is there to do, cry? Or the scene in the porn theatre. Jack confronts David with his victims from the night before. And even after he horribly killed them, they still have that typical British "Hello". I thought that was hilarious. And there's a few more funny moments, like David on the phone with his sister. Or the scene where David tries to get himself arrested (Queen Elizabeth is a man!). Or the details you notice on a second viewing. I already saw the cameo by Rik Mayall, but Bottom-fans should keep their eyes peeled in the pub. The guy who plays Rotweiler in the gasman episode has a part here as well. |

AWIL's flatfooted wolf is good. Personally I found the standing wolves in The Howling much more frightening. I always like David Naughton's disco song Makin It. Ever hear it? I had/have the record! ::big grin:: It was written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris, the team also responsible for Gloria Gaynor's #1 hit "I Will Survive" and Peaches and Herb's #5 hit "Shake Your Groove Thing" and #1 hit "Reunited". |

DARK AUGUST 1976
A man moves to a small town to be with his girlfriend and tragically kills a local young girl in a car accident. A bit of a Pumpkinhead vibe. Ticked all my boxes. |
