BLACULA (1972). Know I mentioned a year or two ago and my comments on William Marshall and the movie is better than You would think still stand. Watching this the other day and a lot of TV actors in here like Denise Nicholas (ROOM 222), Thalmus Rasulala (ALL IN THE FAMILY, Various Soaps), Charles Macauley (STAR TREK -he also is a great Dracula, suave and despicable), Kitty Lester (LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, hilarious as the mouthy Cabbie and providing two of the movie's best scares) and Emily Yancy as the Club photographer who was in FRASIER close to the end of the series and feel the Producers missed a Golden opportunity by not utilizing her more...her Son does not get along with Frasier and she and Frasiers Dad have a small romance. Show would have ended better if the romance had continued instead of Martin getting a new girlfriend. Still ***1/2

MANDINGO (1975). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Have seen many negative adjectives describing this such as "Trash", "Loathsome" and "Abomininble" and must say that is scratching the surface...totally offensive in so many ways and such a waste of a fine cast. It deals with a decaying Plantation that needs to revive its fortunes and mainly gets it by Slave trading. This Paramount film would surely never be made today, but to give credit where it is due, it is probably the most convincing in showing the awful aspects of slavery, such as auctions, forced separations and mistreatment.
Good cast as mentioned, although probably a low point for many of them...James Mason (whose "Treatment" for Rheumatism ::shocked::), Susan George, Brenda Sykes , Perry King (CLASS OF 84), Ken Norton playing a fighter who tangles with Earl Maynard (A Pro Wrestler mainly on the West Coast and one of Lou Gosset's cronies in THE DEEP) and Ji-Tu Cumbuka (BLACULA and DR BLACK AND MR HYDE) and a quick glance at Sylvester Stallone, a year or so before ROCKY.
Though Slavery is shown as the Big evil in here, it must be pointed out that Women of all types also were Second Class Citizens, with NO RIGHTS at all. Susan George does give probably the one Good performance here as "Blanche" who marries Perry to get away from Her Brother (it implies rape had occurred) and give Him an Heir. Perry is suspicious and upset that Blanche is not "Pure" which drives him back to His Love Slave, Ellen (Brenda) who gets pregnant by him. In retaliation, Blanche seduces Ken and Perry just cannot deal with the results of that, although He has done the exact same thing.
Approach with caution...*1/2

I just saw a few more Italian giallo horror films on Tubi TV, Mario Bava's "Blood On Black Lace," Umberto Lenzi's "Knife Of Evil," "Beyond The Darkness," "The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave," and "Strip Nude For Your Killer." They are all very intense, artsy, and gory with plenty of great twists and turns! "Knife Of Evil" and "The Night Evelyn Came Out From The Grave" turned out to have two of the most surprising endings I have seen, which says a LOT! ::danger::

Since Valentine's Day just came and went again, I just looked back at the original My Bloody Valentine, which is always fun to look back at! It still holds up to this very day and age, and even looks better and scarier than a lot of slasher films from more recent years! I would definitely rate this one up with the classic Friday the 13th, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, and Nightmare On Elm Street films! ::cool::

THE ENFORCER (1976). Third Dirty Harry film has some good moments, but a lot of stiff scenes maybe due to first time Director James Fargo inexperience. The main plot involves an SLA type group stealing weapons to extort money from the city. Lots of dialogue that was cliche even by the time of TE's release like "Pigs" and "Power to the People".
Some good photography of Alcatraz Island, a Weapons display at Fort Baker (where I lived July 1971- July 1972-recognized some parts of it) and Tyne Daly is quite good as Harry's newest partner, a neophyte who hustles and becomes proficient; more than likely helped Her get CAGNEY AND LACEY. **1/2

MY BEST FRIEN IS A VAMPIRE (1988). Had never heard of this until my Wife found a guy called Jack Finch on YOUTUBE with various "Top 5" for Horror movies and since He mentioned this, thought We would check it out...have liked most of his choices.

A Teen Delivery Boy trying to find Romance (despite a lovely Cheerleader who has her eye on him-LeeAnne Locken who was later on REAL HOUSEWIVES OF DALLAS) is seduced by a Hot client (Cecelia Peck, daughter of Gregory Peck), becomes a Vampire and tries to adjust to all the changes.

While it's kind of goofy, it actually wasn't all that bad with some decent laughs (and much better than I remember ONCE BITTEN being) and a pretty good cast. Robert Sean Leonard as the neophyte Bloodsucker was later on TV's HOUSE, Fanie Flagg who wrote FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, Rene Auberjonais , David Warner and a younger Kathy Bates! ***

I just saw Mario Bava's "Hatchet For The Honeymoon" for the first time, and that one is an eye opening interesting and intense one. It is about an unhappy married man whose wife will not have a divorce because she wants to keep part of his business and profit. He goes on a spree of killing soon to be happy brides, due to that and a severe mental illness. This one takes us inside the mind of the sick and demented serial killer, which is unique and different from most serial killer films, and it is very artsy and gory with good smooth editing like most of Mario Bava's work. Those who like the psychological thrillers that are dark, artsy, and gory in the old school done right format, along with fans of Mario Bava should not be disappointed with this one. ::danger::

I finally got to see "Amityville 3D" from 1983 for the first time, and I'm glad I did. The copy I have is in lively 2D format, and similar to how it was meant to be seen back when it first came out in theaters. It may not top the original, but it is a good, scary, and worthy sequel. Fans of the Amityville and haunted house themed movies should love this one. This one is hard to describe in words without giving spoilers, but those who like haunted house themed movies should see this one for sure. ::cool::

The Hidden (1987)
7/10

FBI agent (Kyle McLachlan) and local officer (Michael Nouri) try to stop a space alien on a crime and murder spree. Nicely shot and paced horror thriller with a sense of humor. Well shot car chase scenes and special effects. The story is simple and rather lighthearted for a horror/thriller. And while the characters are shallow, the main actors are engaging and film's successful as light entertainment.

Very much enjoyed this one, Sculpt::smile::Definitely worth several watches and I can certainly appreciate an Alien who likes Fast Cars, Heavy Metal Music and Strippers!

THE DEVIL'S RAIN (1975). This Cult movie certainly has it's good points, but bounces all over the place and gooey ending goes on too long. But I like the cast (very Young John Travolta) and Ernest Borgnine is truly a very cheerful villain here. Also interesting how Anton Lavey, the founder of The Church of Satan was an advisor for the film and also has a small part. **1/2

LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE AKA MIDNIGHT AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE (1974). Pretty good and spooky flick of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD-ish corpses terrorizing an English town (although it was filmed in Italy) with a pretty cool explanation of how it all came to be. Also kudos for the unsettling breathing from the corpses. ***1/2

Inferno (1980)

Honestly... I was very disappointed. Watched it in conjunction with Suspiria (probably not a good idea). The opening scenes are very good; the scene where the witches “fly” is so amazing I could talk about it all day. If you’ve seen it I’ll expect you know what I mean, even if you don’t share my enthusiasm. The finale was also very lacklustre (and the riverside murder... *groan*)

Overall I completely understand why Dario Argento considers this his least favourite films, and I can see why. I know that Mario Bava films some large chunks of the film but even so I expected better from both of them.

I likely join you as being a fan of Suspiria, but not necessarily a lot of the other Giallo films.

Curious what you think of The Beyond (1981)?

I enjoyed Blood and Black Lace (1964), Black Sabbath (1963) and Zombi 2, and there's a lot I haven't seen yet. But wasn't thrilled with The Beyond and Opera.

Just curious, what didn't you like about The Beyond or Opera?

I have a soft spot for the Italians. Over 20 years ago it took me the better part of a decade but I managed to track a copy of pretty much every single film Fulci directed with the exception of some early documentaries he did. Argento only took me a year by comparison, but I find Opera and The Beyond both to be highlights in the Italian catalogue so I'm always curious to hear what others liked or disliked in the Italian realm as it's kind of a special niche for me.

CLAUDINE (1974). Single Mother (Diann Carroll) working as a Domestic (and illegally supplementing her income with welfare) meets kindly Garbage Man (James Earl Jones) and a romance sparks. Lots of Roadblocks and will they be able to overcome them?

Carroll and Jones are great together (and believe they both got nominated for Oscars) and early performances by Roxie Roker (THE JEFFERSONS) and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (WELCOME BACK KOTTER). But I felt the film played a lot like an episode of GOOD TIMES; was almost expecting Lawrence to yell "Dy-No -Mite!" a couple of times and an ending that just doesn't ring true. **1/2

Hey RDB! Good to hear from ya!

Well, it's been a while since I've seen them, so allow me to be more general...
In regards to saying I wasn't a big fan of From Beyond, I know that's likely to get folks to say some nasty things to you ::big grin::. But it's pretty simple, it's a personal peeve I have with a high percent of Giallo films: I don't like illogical scenes. I can take a dream sequence in a film with the best of them, but a film that's full of illogical scenes irks me.

From Beyond, as far as remember, doesn't announce its dream sequence but it's full of illogical, unreal, and impossible scenes, including jump-cuts. You know, like the spiders killing the dude the way they did. If you know the film well, you already know what I mean. So it's just not something I enjoy. I still appreciated the film and enjoyed it in my own way, I'm just not a fan.

I was very looking forward to Opera. The trailers I saw had some great shots (thinking of movement shots through the crowded theatre). But the film as a whole had very few impressive shots (as I recall). It had some unrealistic scenes (thinking of killing scenes in the big room with props) where victims should have moved or escaped, stuff like that... which I was prepared for, but still rather something I endure. Overall, I just didn't find the story all that intriguing; and didn't really find it all that suspenseful or exciting either. I know Opera was very well received by critics, but I just have to be honest. Maybe I was in a horrible mood, and I should give it a second look.

I'M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA (1988). Early Wayans Brothers film that is a parody of the Blaxploitation films that started in the 70's and is in the same vein as their later SCARY MOVIE franchise. Quite a few misses, but an awful lot of hits that are truly funny. A great cast, many who were involved in blaxploitation...Jim Brown (SLAUGHTER, BLACK GUNN), Issac Hayes (SHAFT, SOUTH PARK), Bernie Casey (DR BLACK AND MR HYDE, REVENGE OF THE NERDS), Antonio Fargas (FOXY BROWN, TV's STARSKY AND HUTCH), Clarence Williams 3 (TALES FROM THE HOOD, TV's THE MOD SQUAD), John Vernon (ANIMAL HOUSE, CHAINED HEAT, KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE), Clu Gulagher (THE HIDDEN, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD), Ja'Net Dubois (TV's GOOD TIMES), Eve Plumb (TV's THE BRADY BUNCH) and a young Chris Rock. ***

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981). A long time favorite...it has Everything. Action, Suspense, Comedy, Great FX, a rousing score and awesome cast...thought then and now that Harrison Ford and adorable Karen Allen had wonderful chemistry together and would have loved to have seen more of them in the sequels (Lets forget the last Indy film, the one about the Skulls...had to give up after 20 minutes it was so bad). The opening segment is classic with more excitement in those ten minutes than many movies have in their entirety. Still and always *****

Total agreement. This is how you do a big box office success is done.

I got around to watching A Nightmare on Elm Street again. The more the sequels get towards the back of your mind, the more you notice how genuinely scary it is. A true classic.

Also, knowing all the stuff that was to come afterwards... hearing a blue balls Johnny Depp say "morality sucks" is kind of funny.
